If you cast your mind back to your childhood, you might recall playing a game with your friends called "Chinese Whispers" or the less ethnocentric varietal, "The Telephone Game." It's a clever little amusement in which a simple sentence, passed silently from ear to ear, makes its way around those gathered to play and ends up getting transformed at the end of the line. I, myself recall an embarrassing instance in which my declaration of wanting to go to the movies somehow ended up being a rather raunchy declamation of an indelicate design I had on someone's mother.

At the moment, the political sphere is a-quiver with concern of some remarks made by Barack Obama at a gathering of funders in San Francisco. There are reasonable people who heard those remarks and felt alarmed and offended. There are other reasonable people who have sought to defend the candidate's statements. And, like it or not, the other two candidates have - quite reasonably, because this is a competitive election - sought to take advantage of the incident.

That's a debate that's going to rage on, both here, in our comment threads, and elsewhere, and I'm not going to jump up and down on anyone's head because they want to take a for or against position on Obama's remarks. My concern is that a game of Chinese Whispers is being played over the remarks in the media, and it's not just threatening the reasonable debate on the merits of Obama's statement as of now, it's threatening the discourse in general. Long after the "bitter" dust is settled, the ramifications of such distortions will remain.

Let's begin by presenting Obama's statement, as recorded and reported by our own Mayhill Fowler:

OBAMA: You go into some of these small towns in Pennsylvania, and like a lot of small towns in the Midwest, the jobs have been gone now for 25 years and nothing's replaced them. And they fell through the Clinton Administration, and the Bush Administration, and each successive administration has said that somehow these communities are gonna regenerate and they have not. And it's not surprising then they get bitter, they cling to guns or religion or antipathy to people who aren't like them or anti-immigrant sentiment or anti-trade sentiment as a way to explain their frustrations.

That's precisely what he said. It should be no problem for the media to hew to this. After all, as Howard Kurtz ably demonstrated, when the need was great and the call went out to quote Eliot Spitzer's hooker correctly, media professionals stepped up and delivered. Yet in both traditional media and elsewhere, distortions of Obama's remarks are proliferating. The most egregious instance may be Pat Buchanan, who said that Obama said:

Thus, they cling to their bibles, and guns and bigotries toward strangers and people that aren't like them.

At the New Republic, John Judis has cannonballed into the pseudo-intellectual deep end, stretching the remark thusly:

In the speech, Obama appeared to say that Pennsylvania voters' opposition to gun control or abortion or immigration or free trade was pathological--a product of what Marxist philosopher Herbert Marcuse once called "false consciousness."

And, as John Tomasic points out, George Will used the occasion to distort another one of Obama's remarks: "George Will denounced Barack Obama as an 'elitist' and then told an outright lie about Obama, claiming that Obama had tried to "commiserate" with Iowans about high food prices by citing the price of Arugula at Whole Foods." This is an extraordinary example of intellectual bankrupty on Will's part, because in an earlier instance, he quite clearly seemed to understand the context of Obama's statement: "In that piece, however, Will accurately noted the context about farmers, how at places such as Whole Foods the prices were exorbitant and so farmers in places like Iowa should be entitled to some of the profits. So why is Will lying about it now?"

And while Yahoo Answers is hardly a mainstream media garrison, someone has framed their question in a way that's fitting to the discussion, asking, "Why did Obama say only bitter hicks are against free trade when it's been part of his platform since Iowa?" and then, hilariously, requesting that respondents "Please address the question and not the hyperbole." Uhm...that's going to be hard!

But even if you are not inclined to defend Obama in this instance (or at all), these examples of hyperbole, distortion, high-toned glaze and outright fabrication should be of concern to anyone, because it lays the foundation for future distortion and skew. Need a reminder of how bad it can get? Well, let's cast our minds back to an election of yesteryear, in which this:

"During my service in the United States Congress, I took the initiative in creating the internet."

Became:

"Al Gore says he invented the internet."

As it turns out, Gore, as a Senator, "secured the passage of the High Performance Computing and Communications Act in 1991" which "supported the National Research and Education Network (NREN) initiative that became one of the major vehicles for the spread of the internet beyond the field of computer science." These facts were readily available to anyone who cared to look, but instead, the distortion took hold and Gore could never shake it. If you recall, the Gore/Bush election was a razor thin decision--one less false frame, one more lie knocked down, and who knows? The world might look a lot different today.

These distortions are not confined to "bitterness" or to Barack Obama or to the active presidential candidates or, indeed, to the 2008 election. Or to elections in general (cf. Iraq War)! Whether it's a casual misquotation or a willfull, wonton distortion, lives can be impacted and potential good undone. There's nothing wrong with a vigorous debate on Obama's comments. But if you value the discourse, you should demand that the professionals get it right, no matter what side you're on.

Do you have an additional example of such a distortion, Obama or otherwise? Share it with us in the comments!

As an educated small town American I will no longer retreat and read my books quietly in the closet. I love my education. Equally, I love and honor those that share every bit of wisdom of any sort with me. I accept no favor for any intellectual superiority that someone might imagine that I possess. Further, as a professional scientist I have been a sport about censorship should the results of scientific research might embarrass someone.

I take exception to bitter yellow journalists, such as Pat Buchanan and Lou Dobbs, who portray small town people as those who would abandon God and the Bill of Rights in times of frustration. I support the rights of everyone to worship God in their personal way. I support the rights of everyone who chooses secularism. Because I believe in America, because I believe in education, and because I believe in freedom of religious expression I choose Barack Obama as my selection for President of the United States. Barack's carefully selected words have brought about a profound inspiration. We are fortunate to live in such a moment when minds are being unshackled. This is a time to remember... a time to be positive... a time to be joyful. I hope everyone will have their share of joy today.

The problem for Barack Obama is that words do matter.

As a college English instructor, I"ve had some practice decoding language, and in broad strokes, the unmistakable essence is this: "When Bubba loses his job at the plant, he gets pissed off, grabs his shotgun and maybe slaps Sally Sue around a bit, sings louder at his Bible-thumping church, and blames everything on those damn foreigners."

I repeat, words do matter.

As an academic, I"m quite familiar with the rhetoric of "Obama speak." Scratch the surface of some of the college professors in our country and you will find this same specious attitude of intellectual and academic superiority lurking behind the egalitarian facade. For elitism is not primarily an issue of income bracket, but a state of mind, a world view.

It"s also an unevolved one. This type of thinking is more common in the young and highly educated, since the education of life has yet to enrich that provided by the Ivy League. In fact, one might say that Obama"s words were a "natural reaction," given his background not only at Harvard but at the Punahou School (as a recent resident of Hawaii, I know, in a way that many "mainlanders" do not, exactly what this means).

Natural reaction or no, however, the words are not excusable. Obama is 46 years old, not 20. Presumably, an educated man of his age should have realized long before now that intellectual snobbery is the height of ignorance.

The twisting and turning would be amusing in a conversation -- but for talking heads supposedly "in the know" and charged with delivering news to the public, it's disconcerting ... and I'm pretty bitter about it.

So you are mad that pundits paraphrase his comments?

Like when they say "antipathy towards people who dont look like them" = bigotry.

Ummm, they are correct....they are just removing the harvard elitist languange.

Yes I am mad that the pundits are "paraphrasing" his and any other candidate's words. If you are going to bash someone for something they said then you have to bash them for what they actually said and not what it sounded like to you, or what you thought he meant or felt he was trying to say. You can't replace their thoughts with a hyperbolic word. I'll give you an example, if I said that a person does not have interactions with people of other races this is not the same thing as saying someone is a raciest. likewise;

bigotry = the intolerance and prejudice of a bigot

Anitpathy = the object of a feeling of intense aversion; something to be avoided.

Now to me I see a difference between these two words, but that may be because I understand words and their meaning. That is why it is important to use the actual words of a candidate and not just try to boil their thoughts down to short, distorted sound bites (ex: Obama called PA voters bigots as I have seen rightwinger after rightwinger say), we are smarter than this, we deserve better than this. If you are offended by what Obama said more power to you, but be mad at what he said not what some pundit thinks he meant to say.

exactly ...
"antipathy towards people who dont look like them" = bigots
"anti-trade" = protectionist
"anti-immigrant" = xenophobe

St.Obama basically called the American workers -- ' guns/god clinging, bigoted, protectionist xenophobes' . And then he expect them to vote for them ....

To the Hillhounds...
As your mouths froth in anticipation of your candidate possibly achieving her & the RNC's ultimate goal of bringing our ENTIRE party down by distracting us with this foolery...Let's be real.
Most voters could TRULY CARE LESS how a candidate DESCRIBES their economic situation as long as he works to FIX IT??!!
Do you think former US Presidents had accurate, yet rosy descriptions of the Black economic struggle??
Or hell, even cared enough to address it?
NO. They dont and probably never will.

Bush called us his "fellow friends and Americans" for eight years and still screwed America over more than ANY US President to date?!
But I guess his lies shouldn't matter because he was politically correct and called me his "fellow friend" when he did it...
Americans SHOULD rather be hurt by the truth than destroyed with lies.

Do you Hillary supporters and Bittergate exponents honestly think that she, while sitting on her pile o' millions, views any of you any differently than Sen. Obama depicted or herself as one of our equals???
Use your common sense. She agrees with and knows that every single every word Sen. Obama uttered IS true-that's why she's playing off it with voters.

Obama WORKED TO HELP unemployed steelworkers years ago and was telling the truth..however inartful the delivery!
Can Hillary tell the truth...period?
Hillary and her clan would politically assassinate Santa Claus if it gave her one more poll point.

But McClinton saying "Screw 'em" about white (reagan) democrats who voted the democratic party out n the 1995 congressional election is just fine with you.
You need to watch this video of your "sainted" candidate:

Nicely said but probably to an audience who already knows better. Question is how to make all of this clear to main stream Americans who don't bother to read or research their politicians.

For those uninformed who still cling to Fox or CNN, ABC, CBS, NBC for all the news that's fit to print ( meaning it is entertaining enough to broadcast ) the only picture they will receive is that distorted version twisted to fit the editorial preferences of the particular media outlet.

Those broadcasts don't offer foot notes or tell you where you can read the true facts. This is, after all, why politicians spend so much time on TV either in ads or on talk shows. At this stage of the "game" they are all salesmen / women, with a product to sell...themselves.

I think Bill Maher once said that a "...politician while running for office cannot tell the truth."

Now that one has and it has made news and put the others on the spot. They MUST try to spin it or face the possibility that they might also have to start spreading honesty for a change. Can you imagine an honest civil election?

I can't.

Foreseeable Headline: Obama claims "¦sky is blue" Clinton attacks!

Witnessing the media collectively extricate something broad and offensive from Obama's less than shocking relay of a most simplistic theme, was comical. Imagine people who feel disenfranchised and disillusioned by government? Imagine how the resulting absence of trust in leadership and support potentially deepens believes elsewhere both in the traditionally constructive as well as destructive retreats? Wow. (he"s out of control) Folks, my ten year old got it.

The only offensive, condescending, elitist aspect of this entire sequence was the media (and Clinton, more so than McCain) virtually instructing Pennsylvania voters (and the entire working middle class) to be offended. Could Clinton produce more genuinely "offended" people than Obama could those that are "bitter"? Say¦Louisiana, through circumstance, failure of leadership? The guys who still train in the mountains in V.A., still upset about losing, but bitter? Nah.

What a relief Republicans exhibit no signs of elitism no one in the U.S. clings to guns - thank you for the candor and clarity Hillary, CNN, FOX, MSNBC for your fearless pursuit of truth. But hey folks, the media performs sensory rape on the masses - Gore, Kerry - great examples - so, you end up with a Dick with a George in his hand (could be funnier)

Despite the fact that none of this should surprise us, political spin what it is, reaching Olympic proportions through this race. It"s simply difficult to imagine just how low and collusive the journalistic bar is?

HEADLINE: "Obama Claims Sky is Green"

Hillary appropriately corrects him and says it's "blue" and she's attacked by MSM and Obama supporters for stating the obvious.

That seems to be the way things go.

Yep, the MSM is a rightwing slanted freakshow. They smear the Dems and present the GOP candidate as a "salt of the earth" tough guy.

Happens every time.

To think, some people didn't vote for Gore because of him "sighing" in a debate?

Proof of just how slanted the GOP-run media really are.

Racist rightwing neanderthal Pat Buchanan being allowed anywhere on TV is further proof.

Rev. Wright's words are also being horribly distorted and comments erroneously ascribed to him. He didn't liken Israel to the Nazi regime in the pages of his church's magazine. That came from an article reprinted from the LA Times! The words of praise for Louis Farrakhan in the magazine didn't come from him either, yet they're being reported as such. He didn't say modern-day Italian-Americans have garlic noses. He said - obviously referring to the Biblical Romans - "The Italians for the most part looked down their garlic noses at the Galileans." I don't understand how the American media can be so careless with people's reputations and, ultimately (as the run-up to the Iraq war proves), people's lives.

I frankly feel that Rev. Wright should sue these people that are distorting his words. One thing that has happened with this election is that the true ugliness of people has been uncovered. People are mean. This is what Michelle Obama meant. And many of these people distorting the truth call themselves christians. This is the reason that I no long go to church, because many times if is full of people who distort peoples words to achieve some type of sick reaction. Right now, I am ashamed that we have people like this in a country such as ours.
