It's no secret that celebrities (gasp!) have plastic surgery, but it does seem like people are getting pretty darn sick of it.

In an article from this Sunday's LA Times, Mary McNamara writes :

To avoid those angry denials through publicists, and to appear above the proletariat fixation with appearance, mostly we in the mainstream press say nothing. Or rather we say nothing in print and then run into our editor's office to say what everyone else across the country is saying: "Oh, my Lord, did you see what she did to her face?"

Me, I think it's time to come clean. If cosmetic surgery and other age-battling or appearance-altering procedures are part of the zeitgeist, then we need to figure out a way to discuss it critically without seeming like we are engaging in some form of gotcha.

Beyond being able to write about celebrity surgery, she asserts that:

Television is a visual art, and if people are going to significantly alter the way they look in ways not directly connected with the roles they are playing, it can affect not only their performance but the whole tone of the show.

So you tell me, what is a critic supposed to say when part of the problem with a show is that the leading lady's face seems incapable of movement or her eyes appear to be moving toward the sides of her head or her lips just look weird?

Should critics be able to critique actors who's surgical endeavors are not only a distraction but a liability to the film? Nicole Kidman's turn in Invasion, the alien invasion flick she co-starred in with Daniel Craig, was admirable, but less so, however, for her acting skills and more so for the blessed coincidence that her artificially frozen forehead enabled her to oh-so-easily blend in with the emotionless alien drones she was trying to avoid.

In any case, McNamara's thoughts proved to be timely, as this week's issue of Newsweek features an article on some newly discovered dangers of Botox, namely it's tendency to leak into one's brain.

But, according to the Telegraph, there's been an almost-seismic boom in male plastic surgery, thanks largely in part to such imitable alpha-males as Nicholas Sarkozy and Michael Douglas.

But lastly, and most importantly: What are your thoughts? Who do you think has the worst plastic surgery? Would you ever have plastic surgery? Please tell us your thoughts!

If God (or Nature) meant for us to tighten our faces in old age, we would have come equipped with snare drum hardware on our necks with a drum key.

....just a little more make up and the posted pic of Priscilla P. would give Jack Nicholsons portrayal of the Joker a run for the money......why did a woman...with the good looks she once had allow someone with scalpels and needles do this to her........(the question is RHETORICAL).......she has basically the same expression ALL THE TIME......smiling,frowning....I bet when she breaks down and truly weeps ....the expression doesnt change..........

while the usual party girls were committing their easily forgivable and surmountable mistakes, this happened:
http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b375/cal_101/rose_mcgowan_facelift.jpg
a terrible career disaster- a mistake that has permanent, unappealable consequences . this happened after charmed finished its eighth season. with the world at her feet, this was no vain effort to hang onto youth. it is simply unaccountable. none of the partying, vehicularly challenged young celebrities made anything even approaching this kind of appalling tragic mistake. this is why to some of us a traffic warrant isn't comparatively the end of the world for a 20 something known for beauty.

I know plenty of non-celeb women who have had amazing plastic surgery. Most look completely natural, just 5-10 years younger and well-rested.
Celebs seem to have some dysmorphic condition. I wouldn't look to a celeb for a referral

Just before I turned 50 I had a lower face lift with liposuction to tighten up a matronly looking jawline and remove a double chin when I smiled. I am otherwise fit and healthy. I love the results! Unless I point out that I had a "surgical alteration", no one can tell that I had a face lift. I just look younger and thinner, not different than I used to look.

No botox or "fish lips" for me, thank you very much.

less is more. good for you. what i heard is that it's best to have the first one early, just after heaviness sets in at the corners of the mouth and the jawline softens; then the last one much later. the last one is when the skin should be taken back and tightened. years ago everyone thought angela landsbury had had something done before embarking on her immensely successful " murder, she wrote" show. if so, it was considered to be perfect, flawless. at that time, swiss practice was considered well advanced over california equivalents. i haven't heard that they go to europe to get troutlips or catface surgery effects. they seem to get them here. joan collins is probably an example of a well-known person who has, presumably, had surgery in europe. i think less could be more for her too.

Why would anyone want to put in thier bodies what they use to embalm you? Hello, I don't know about the rest of you, but I am willing to wait a long time before I let that happen to me. Unless you have been in a disfiguring accident, its not needed. It looks fake as hell, isn't attractive. If you look at people who had all of that plastic put in them, ask this. Do you really want to chip a tooth on another pair of fake boobs? Wouldn't you worry that some of them would warp under extreme heat? And then there is the I created a monster Dr. Frankenstein look many get if it ends up botched. NOOOOO. People, let nature do its thing, work with it, and go gracefully. For all that is human and decent. You get a wrinkle its not the end of the world, and don't get me started on the nose jobs. I don't think so. My kid wanted botox at 15 and I said Hell No. Ok, here it goes, if the boobs hang to the knees, twirl em like pasta on a fork, if the knees droop, get a harness. If your face begins to go, use plaster. But please, if I see one more pair of fake boobs on kids I will spit. Just say No.

Celebrities" cosmetic surgery aside, I think that a much more pressing issue is the research showing that Botox can move into and paralyze the brain. The Newsweek article cited in this article presents a good summary. The findings could indicate that all of the millions of people who have had Botox injections since 1989 could be at risk for at least partial brain paralysis.

The research done by Italian neuroscientists shows that the neurotoxin used in Botox travels along nerve cells into and through the brain. The scientists were attempting to develop a procedure in mice for using the neurotoxin to treat epilepsy, when they noticed that the effects of the neurotoxin in parts of the brain that had not been injected. Further research showed that the toxin does travel through the brain, following nerves that originate near the site of injection. The toxin showed up in a variety of locations, including the brain stem and hippocampus.

Although this new research is in mice, it is very possible that the toxin works in the same way in humans. There is not a huge amount of immediate worry for humans because few people who have had Botox injections have shown signs of brain paralysis; however, these new findings have contributed to the worry over Botox in light on the recent spate of Botox-related deaths.

Looking better vs looking younger.
"Cosmetic" surgery can help people look better and feel better about themselves.

People in Hollywood seem to fear aging in general. If you've made millions of dollars because you are young and perky it's hard to transition to old and elegant. People try to stop the clock.

It's unrealistic for a 60 year old to try and look 25. A 60 year old can justify cutting out some wrinkles and removing the bag under his or her eyes if he or she wants to look like a more attractive 60 year old.

I think people who go through plastic surgery are either vain, or lack an appreciation of their self-image. If you feel good about yourself, you don't want to change your physical appearance.

You can't be serious! You mean having poison injected into your face isn't a good idea? Geez, I didn't see that one coming....

My personal dislike - lip plumping. It looks so unnatural, bizarre and painful, like someone beat them up. I can't understand how anyone thinks it's attractive.

Priscilla looks good for 62 but her face has absolutely no movement above her jawline. I saw her on Dancing With The Stars and it's almost as if she's wearing a mask.

If she has one more facelift, she'll be wearing a goatee!

Women-- one moderate facelift can do wonders. After that you are on your own. More will not work. Acquire some dignity because youth finally goes.

This is the I created a monster, Dr. Frankenstien look I am referring to. Its allowing a bad doctor to go too far. She should have sued the crap out of him for disfiguring her for life. yet I see this all the time. People, what makes us unique is what we were given by nature. Screw with it, and this is the end result.

Cosmetic procedures used in moderation and under the supervision of a qualified physician can enhance and prolong youthful beauty. However, when it becomes extreme, the effect of youthfulness fades into some twisted masque of ego and distorted flesh.

Mary is such a gift. I never fail to appreciate her insight and humor. This article needed to be written - even if I think it's still too forgiving.

I cannot care less what people do to their bodies as long as they foot the bill (I do support though plastic surgery for accident victims if we finally get universal healthcare). What I really find disgusting is when animals get their butts filled with silicone because X wants a J-Lo booty. As long as testing on animals is not involved, knock yourself out.

It's like the celebs say NO I haven't done it, when there are OBVIOUS pics that one can see that they have-jeez at least be honest like Phyliss Diller and others.
I wish I had a health plan that would cover fixing my nose so I could breathe thru both sides of my nose when I'm laying on my side.

Plastic surgery is merely a symptom of our sick society.

Celebs make their living by how they look. Think of it as a tune-up for a NASCAR drivers ride.

Worst denial of obvious plastic surgery award goes to Mariah Carey for her awful augmentation. She went from flat to projecting overnight, cannot even push the things together with an industrial vice, but insists they are real. Runner-up goes to Anna Nicole Smith who stated hers grew overnight right before she was in Playboy. Hmmm. The worst trend in plastic surgery? The trout pout. Why any woman would ask for huge, nasty looking lips in the name of beauty is beyond me.
