***Update***
Think Progress reports that the student who asked McCain about Hillary's drinking is Peter Doocy, the son of Fox and Friends anchor Steve Doocy. Want to learn more about Peter? Read all about his experience working for Fox News on his blog. Watch Peter's question below as well as other clips from the college tour.

John McCain swung by the Hardball College Tour with Chris Matthews on Tuesday at Villanova University in Villanova, Penn., and the presumptive GOP Presidential nominee was met with some pretty hard-hitting questions, including whether he thinks he's a "typical white person," a term that Barack Obama used to describe his own grandmother. Another Villanova student asked McCain whether he thought Hillary Clinton "finally resorted to hitting the sauce because of unfavorable polling." The questions prompted Matthews to joke, "we came her hoping for the best and we got two of the most wise-ass questions." The Hardball host said it was a "tribute to the academic rigor" of the Pennsylvania school.

Watch McCain discuss Hillary's trip to a bar in Crown Point, Indiana:

Watch McCain say whether he thinks of himself as a "typical white person":

There were some more serious questions. McCain said that he thought the strategy in Iraq was working:

Matthews also asked McCain whether Barack Obama was an elitist:

Peter Doocy...Wow, what a genius!! He must be as smart as his old man. Maybe, that's why he hasn't figured out that he's not old enough to be legal yet. Wait a minute... a 20 year old asking a 70 year old out for shots, don't let Mark Foley get wind of this!

Instead of asking about Hilliary, maybe he should be asking John McCain about his wife's problem.

Wow!! 46K a year and that is what Villanova produces...Another clown in the 'faux youth movement'....how predictable Matthews..

Like father, like son, STUPID. His father and his big haired blond co-host are 2 of dumbest people on FOX, even dumber than Sean Hannity, maybe he"s bucking for a anchor spot. Notice how really ignorant people need to make their point louder than anyone else and think there funny when they are really not. My Irish Catholic mom always told me empty barrels make the noise, and if you can't say anything good about someone, it"s best not say anything at all. Her 1st lession is easy, the 2nd is a little harder to live by these days, just to many empty barrels rolling around I guess. Sorry mom.

It is scary to find out that there is yet another Doocy, the older one is such a silly, bad newsman, like father, like son.

He's nothing but a Fox whimp in training. I'm sure Daddy's been bragging about it all day at the water cooler.

Why didn't they ask McCain why he voted to allow the C.I.A . to torture, but claims the United States won't torture if he is elected President. McCain said America should not torture yet voted just the opposite ,i always thought the C.I.A. was part of this country , but i guess i was wrong. As for Steve Douchebag's son he is just about as irrelevent as Fox Noise is.

For the love of God take that kids picture down. I want to crush my screen every time I see him. That completely smug snarky face can only come from one of the faux news douche bags.

Isn't that ironic of all the kids in the college , that he would be picked to ask a question of Senator McCain? What are the chances of that ? I am disgusted with Chris, I don't watch Fox News because I don't like their bias on news. Chris what the hell?

You expect a Republican to field REAL questions from REAL citizens? If that happened then embarrassing question might get asked. Sen McCain, why did the Repub senate allow the deficit to balloon so over the last eight years? Sen McCain, what about that recent votes-for-payola controvercy?

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 01:59 PM on 04/16/2008

agree. the only republican that gets hard questions is Hillary. looks like C.Matthews has a new crush.

As a student of Villanova University, an attendant , and a protester prior to that of the wreck of a "forum" (in McCain's own words) that was Hardball last night, I must say I am ashamed at MSNBC, the people at Hardball, as well as my own university for allowing those students, out of every other student on campus, to not actually prod John McCain any further than superficial Republican-leaning softballs. One female student actually prefaced her question with the fact that she was not going to go hard on the presidential candidate. What I want to know is what kind of screening process did these questioners pass through, and who wants to project my college in this light? It is an embarrassment. Though generally a conservative leaning school (obvious enough with its Catholic background), Villanova has one of the most faithful peace and justice departments that I have come across. I am a member of Villanovans for Peace, as well as the future co-founder of an SDS chapter on campus. To see my fellow students and I, who dedicate ourselves to addressing the issues plaguing our world, be shown in such an ignorant light is deplorable. If any high school student reading this is interested in applying to Villanova University, know that last night is not by any stretch an accurate representation of the student body, but of how "equal" and "fair" these sort of events are in addressing the real plights of the general public.

I was relieved to read your post after spending much of the day embarrassed and ashamed at Villanova. It was a breath of fresh air.

It may interest you to know that events on campus transpired almost precisely the same as they did in 1976. In late September of that year, the Administration declined to provide a forum to Jimmy Carter on the grounds that the University would not participate in partisan politics. Several weeks later the University hosted a major campaign rally for Gerald Ford. For me, it was like deja vu all over again.

I love Nova and am proud one of my children now attends school there. Still,it is difficult for me to accept that the rank hypocrisy of some in the Administration has survived for four decades.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 04:38 PM on 04/16/2008

That is too ironic for words. A few weeks ago Michelle Obama came to speak at the university, and claiming the same role of non-partisan objector, the administration refused to advertise the event on its website, leaving the task solely to the campus group students for Barack Obama. The tune most definitely changed when McCain came around for the event last night, as emails were sent, a listing was put up on the homepage, and the office of student development managed ticket handouts. And while the official stance taken by the powers that be justified this by claiming Hardball to be a non-partisan show, I cannot help but feel overwhelmingly angered after the clear microwave dinner of John McCain propaganda that was served up piping hot to a basketball stadium filled with students. I implore you, as well as your child at Villanova, to express their disgust to the president and to make sure everyone is aware of how slighted the university community was last night.

I may have 'missheard', but didn't one of the students say that Barack said his grandmother (Baracks) was racist?

...and he refered to Barack's speech on race as his speech on 'racism'...

Thank you equalityofconditions.
I thought I was watching the Fox News. The questions posed to McCain were not tough at all. He said we shouldn't torture people. Really, then the question should have been asked " Why did you vote for torture"? That was not asked. I was very surprised since Chris Matthews usually does ask tough questions. The questions on the war were lame, the strategy is working McCain said. Really, I thought the purpose was to gain political gain. We were bombed in the green zone the week before. We are PAYING these tribe members so they don't KILL US . What part of that is strategy working?
I was really disgusted that he was not grilled on his decisions regarding the economy. He basically said that people were on their own until this week regarding the mortgage crisis. He does not support the GI BILL, the list goes on. He is too old for this job. There should be an age limit for president. There is for every other job that requires skill. He is INSANE.
I really hope that the questions asked by your college are not an example of how young people feel there.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 01:35 PM on 04/16/2008

The questions asked by my college reflect in no way how many at my college feel. By and large we are an informed group, as much as the public can be informed in this age of multi-national corporate hegemony of media, but nevertheless we are much better than what was represented last night. It really is a shame that this charade occurred, but frankly I am not surprised, especially coming from the GE controlled MSNBC crowd.

Well you sound well-informed and I applaud you being involved at a young age. This is your future that we are fighting for. I just wish more young students were more informed instead of caring about shooting down shots with the Clinton's or McCain's.

Stupid question and I am ashamed that Chris Matthews went so softball on McCain. Obama did not get treatment when he was on his show.

I watched a portion of the telecast and it was a joke.

If these people represent the college students of America we're in bigger trouble than I already thought.

And Mathews, as usual...was nothing but a suck-ass from start to finish, never asking a hard-hitting question of following up on McCain's inane responses.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 12:25 PM on 04/16/2008

You're right, Matthews went to the Larry King school of media azz kissing. He never plays hardball with the truly powerful. The candidates like these college tourgasms because they get softball questions from Matthews and the students.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 01:14 PM on 04/16/2008

Yeah, Matthews is in the tank for McCain...and I'm Obama's campaign manager...

Are you freakin' kidding me?!? Matthews, of "thrill going up my leg" fame? Matthews, who practically drools and makes comical comparissions to Obama's C.Y.A. speech on Wright to MKL's greatest speech? Matthews, who used to write speeched for Jimmy Carter?

THAT Chris Matthews? Yeah, you're right...he's a tool of the G.O.P....every bit as much as I am a tool for the DNC.

Morons...

As a side note, according to Wikipedia, the young Mr. Doocy is only 20 years old and not legal to drink. However, it appears from his comments that (a) he has experience in illegal drinking and (b) he was asking McSame to engage in illegal conduct, i.e. supplying alcohol to, and drinking with, an underage person. Could you imagine the media outcry had Doocy the Younger been Keith Olbermann's son and asked the question Sen. Obama?

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 12:25 PM on 04/16/2008

So, America's finally learning of two of the dirty little secrets of the campaign trail:

First secret: 99% of the people asking the questions of the candidates are selected in advance by the candidates" campaigns and,
Second secret: the questions that they will ask have been prescreened.

The question was a sad commentary on Doocy and his son. The son came off as a lightweight GW Bush in training; gee I"m so cool everyone wants to have a drink with me, type of dilettante.

Unfortunately, the question lacked substance, made a mockery of the relevance of the youth vote and did nothing to shed any light on what Sen. McCain would do as president.

Note to U. PA admissions staff: What a sad commentary on the caliber of education that is offered at U. PA if Doocy is considered among the best and brightest their institution.

Mr. Matthews we know that you want to be a senator but why did you have to give McCain his questions in advance and why did you have to finish his sentences?

I agree: it was insulting to young people.

Some of greatest hope I have allowed myself to feel has been from watching some young people who are serious and committed to the political process as a way of making the future better.

This young man does not represent the best of today's youth. Neither do the people who cheered him on. He is an example of how to sell out, and sell others out too.
