Lost in the Hillary Rodham Clinton campaign's aggressive attacks on Barack Obama in recent days is a deep and enduring problem that threatens to undercut any inroads Clinton has made in her struggle to overtake him in the Democratic presidential race: She has lost trust among voters, a majority of whom now view her as dishonest.

Her advisers' efforts to deal with the problem -- by having her acknowledge her mistakes and crack self-deprecating jokes -- do not seem to have succeeded. Privately, the aides admit that the recent controversy over her claim to have ducked sniper fire on a trip to Bosnia probably made things worse.

Find trustworthy: Dems 63% Independents 37% Republicans 13%

Most of her decline is probably based on heavy coverage of her Tuzla flub, but in a hotly-contested campaign her unfavorables had to go up as a result of massive negative coverage by the media.

What's interesting is that the 63% trustworthy score obtained from Dems by random polling is so massively higher than the opinions expressed on HuffPost.

Who thinks it's HONEST to repeatedly (at least three times) tell the SAME false story about her experience landing in Tusla? Who thinks Mrs. Clinton did anything of significance relative to determing White House policy accept share her wifely opinions with her husband as every other First Lady did before her? Who believes that Mrs. Clinton was anti-NAFTA during her years as First Lady? Who believes that Mrs. Clinton didn't know that Mark Penn was a lobbyist for Columbia advocating policy interests opposed to her own? Who believes that Mrs. Clinton CAN'T control what comes out of her HUBANDS'S mouth TODAY and doesn't think SHE should be accountable for what HE says, but truly believes that Mr. Obama should have denounced and condemned Rev. Wright and Mr. Ayres for what they said years ago without Mr. Obama's knowledge? I could go on, but if you still think Mrs. Clinton is an HONEST candidate, the truth and or facts are irrelevant to you.

I wouldn't say that she is dishonest so much as disingenuous, much in the way that we truly expect all politicians to be. That her honesty ratings dropped with the same demographics that are supporting Obama is no coincidence.

One of the things that really attracted my son, and then my husband and me to Obama is that even though he says all the things that we have come to expect from politicians, the difference is that when HE says it, you believe it. When I was 5 years old my kindergarten class crowded into the first grade class to watch the first moon landing on television. After this, we truly believed that every little boy AND GIRL could be anything they wanted to be--an astronaut, and doctor, the President. Also, we would one day have flying cars.

The Nixon era took all trust for politicians and with it a cynicism that in order to be president, you had to have a lot of money and the ability to lie to everybody.

We never got the flying cars, but we now have Barack Obama. That works for me.

I'm sorry the Hillary Clinton is not the woman I wanted her to be. I thought I wanted her to be the first woman president, but she pales in comparison to Obama. She doesn't inspire me with anything beyond the "cool, she's a woman running for president" factor. She disappoints me in her same-o same-o politician crap. I am embarrassed to have supported her in the beginning of the race. I am embarrassed that my own mother stubbornly sticks by her. I tell her what I like about Obama and ask what she likes about Hillary. She has nothing good to say about Clinton, only negatives about my choice. We have agreed not to discuss it anymore.

This is an unbelievable statement to me. NO one I know trusts or believes Obama and his repeated lies and outright deceptions. I think that the media is out against Hillary for some idiotic reason. There is no way Obama is an acceptable candidate. If he gets the nomiation then Mc Cain will have the advatage. Most intelligent honest people can see through the Obama facade and all of his questionable associations and he will not get their vote.

One of the qualities American voters look for in their elected leaders is that they are effective liars.

Imagine a President who would tell the world that our invasion/occupation of Iraq was primarily about gaining control of their oil resources and to establish permanent U.S. military bases on their soil.

Imagine a President who said that the use of torture was dictated by the White House and that those carrying it out were just following orders.

Imagine a President who announced that the real rate of inflation was far higher than the announced figures in order to keep annual Social Security Cost of Living Allowances low.

Imagine a President ...

Hillary's poll takers assured her the public wants their President to lie to them. The same polls showed Americans don't trust someone who will tell them the truth.

The poll cited here does not suggest that those who mistrust her honesty will not vote for her.

HilLIEry is not dishonest. Hill and Bill just have there own dictionary that the rest of us are not privy to. Their words just have different meanings than what's in Webster. In the Clinton dictionary, lie is to mis-speak. Oral sex is not sex. We just got it wrong. Hillary supporters let me know when Amazon.com has it on sale so I can get a copy.

I think she is as honest as any other politician.... Obama included.

I don't fall for the media portrayal.

They made Al Gore out to be a liar too.

The truth is out there for anyone really interested..... and the evidence doesn't really support the charge that Hillary is a liar. I know you think I'm being preposterous.... but Al Gore NEVER claimed to have invented the Internet either.

Remember the firestorm about Hillary's story on healthcare concerning the pregnant woman who died? The media screamed "LIAR, LIAR"..... but it turns out the story was truer than the story the media was telling.

The same is true of Tusla..... yes, she exagerated a bit, but the facts fit her version more than the version the media would have you believe.
