PHILADELPHIA — Hillary Rodham Clinton said emphatically Wednesday night that Barack Obama can win the White House this fall, undercutting her efforts to deny him the Democratic presidential nomination by suggesting he would lead the party to defeat.

"Yes, yes, yes," she said when pressed about Obama's electability during a campaign debate six days before the Pennsylvania primary.

Asked a similar question about Clinton, Obama said "Absolutely and I've said so before" _ a not-so-subtle dig at his rival who had previously declined to make a similar statement about him.

In a 90-minute debate, both rivals pledged not to raise taxes on individuals making less than $200,000, and said they would respond forcefully if Iran obtains nuclear weapons and uses them against Israel.

"An attack on Israel would incur massive retaliation by the United States," said Clinton.

Obama said, "The U.S. would take appropriate action."

They differed over Social Security when Obama said he favored raising payroll taxes on higher-income individuals. Clinton said she was opposed, her rival quickly cut in and countered that she had said earlier in the campaign she was open to the idea.

Under current law, workers must pay the payroll tax on their first $102,000 in wages. Obama generally has expressed support for a plan to reimpose the tax beginning at a level of $200,000 or more.

The debate was the 21st of the campaign for the nomination, an epic struggle that could last weeks or even months longer.

Pennsylvania, with 158 delegates at stake, is a must-win contest for Clinton, who leads in the polls and hopes for a strong victory to propel her through the other states that vote before the primary season ends on June 3.

Obama leads in the delegate chase, 1,643-1,504, with 2,025 needed for the nomination. And despite a recent gaffe, he picked up endorsements during the day from three superdelegates from a pair of states with primaries on May 6 _ Reps. Andre Carson of Indiana and Mel Watt and David Price of North Carolina.

After primaries and caucuses in 42 of the 50 states, Obama leads his rival in convention delegates, popular votes and states won. She is struggling to stop his drive on the nomination by appealing to party leaders who will attend the convention as superdelegates that he will preside over an electoral defeat at a moment of great opportunity after eight years of Republican rule.

The former first lady has never denied published reports that she once told New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson that Obama couldn't win when he called to tell her he would be endorsing the Illinois senator.

And at a news conference earlier this month in California, Clinton sidestepped when asked directly whether Obama would win if he were the Democratic nominee. "I am sure we will have a united Democratic Party. I will do everything possible to make sure we can win and I am confident we will have a Democrat in the White House next year," she said at the time.

Asked a similar question at the debate, she provided a similar answer at first. "I think we have to beat John McCain and I have every reason to believe we're going to have a Democratic president and it's going to be Barack or me."

Pressed by George Stephanopoulos of ABC News to answer the question directly, she said, "Yes, yes, yes ... Now I think I can do a better job."

In a debate that moved swiftly between politics and policy, Clinton issued a first-ever public apology for having claimed erroneously that she landed in Bosnia under sniper fire in 1996 as first lady.

"I may be a lot of things but I am not dumb," she said, adding that she had written in her book that there had been no gunfire during the episode. She said she was embarrassed by her error. "I'm sorry I said it," she added.

She previously had explained her incorrect comments by saying she had misspoken.

Obama later erred by saying he had never favored a ban on handguns even though as a state Senate candidate in 1996 he filled out a questionnaire from an Illinois voter group saying he would support such a ban.

"My writing wasn't on that particular questionnaire ... as I said, I have never favored an all-out ban on handguns," Obama said, even though his handwritten notes did appear on its front page. The reponse to the question about guns was typed.

Obama had more explaining to do moments later, when he was asked about his controversial comment that small town Americans become bitter because of economic adversity, and "cling to guns or religion or antipathy to people who aren't like them" as a result.

He said he was attempting to say that because voters feel ignored by government, "they end up being much more concerned about votes around things like guns where traditions have been passed on from generation to generation. And those are incredibly important to them."

"People don't cling to their traditions on hunting and guns" out of frustration with their government, Clinton said. She added that Obama had a fundamental misunderstanding on the role of religion and faith.

Both Obama and Clinton sidestepped when asked if they would place their rival on the ticket as vice presidential running mate in the fall.

"I think very highly of Senator Clinton's record, but I think it is premature at this point to talk about who the vice presidential candidates will be because we're still trying to determine who the nominee will be," Obama said.

Clinton was similarly noncommittal. "I'm going to do everything I possibly can to make sure that one of us takes the oath of office next January. I think that has to be the overriding goal," she said.

Neither rival was willing to say they would ask President Bush to serve in any capacity after he leaves office. Obama volunteered he would be "more likely to ask the advice of the current president's father. He said, that as president, George H. W. Bush had presided over a "wise foreign policy" at the time the Cold War was ending.

ABC News sponsored and televised the debate, with Charles Gibson and Stephanopoulos moderating.

Wouldn't it be nice if this Democratic blog ...had the title...."Both Democratic candidates endorse one another for a White House Victory'? Here's a little something...come Nov. those states lit up in blue that were pro Hillary in the primary ,will need to be lit up blue once again should Sen Obama win the nomination. I'm not really understanding why this blog, CNN and all the other liberal based media would work so hard to alienate the Hillary supporters. Sometimes I think if Hillary did win the nomination this blog would endorse McCain :(

The reason that is not the title is because Sen. Obama had said previously he thought Sen. Clinton was capable of winning the general election if she were the Democratic nominee. The change, the new information, is that Sen. Clinton has FINALLY said she believes Sen. Obama could win the general. She has always avoided answering that question directly, whether out of pique, gamesmanship, or as an attempt to create doubt about his viability is anyones guess, and depending on the bias you'll get a different answer form everyone you ask.

Did you know that Hillary was once a Republican?

I wanted to comment on Bob Johnson. (I always have a delayed anger reaction to the crap that is happening in our world). Any way, I am appaulded at the Bob Johnson statements. When he was becoming successful, was american caught up in that concept or was it BLACK america. I have already purchased my last Jet and Ebony.

Obama is a staged phenomenon. The Clinton people never had a chance. We can finally account for Hillary's vast lead, which lasted for 8 months, far more time than was necessary for Obama and his people, to make themselves and their agenda known to the public. All the other candidatets in the Dem lineup, lett the contest. Hillary was vastly ahead, because the country wanted and liked her. Obama was essentially forced on the American people by way of two media efforts: 1) derail Hillary, 2) promote Obama, with the ultimate and intended effect of insuring a McCain victory in November.

Of course Hillary would "say" that she thought Obama was qualified to be president, if she was cornered into making such an admission. Consider how hypocritical and naive the Obama supporters are, and how clever are the Hillary haters, Stephanopoulos and Gibson included. This debate is roundly criticiized for its emphasis on trivia, "except" where Hillary is asked if she thinks Obama is electable; in that instance, the debate was substantive. She's presumed to always be lying, just as Gore was, but in all cases "except" when asked this one question about Obama's electability. No one notices how vastly more focused, clearheaded and knowlegeable Hillary is, on all matters political. When Obama is left to his own devices and has to speak spontaneously, he reveals what a novice and hack he is. The Pennsylvania debate was calculated with stunning precision, down to the last detail.

Tht is some interesting revisionist history... unfortunately while you have a right to your own opinion, you don't have a right to your own facts. Clinton started out of the gate strong because she had a dozens and dozens of superdelegates pledged to her before the first primary or Caucus. When it came time for epeople to actually start voting rather than those who she had established political relationships with, we the people had something different to say. Check the polls from the moment all candidates had announced their intention to run up to today. The numbers won't lie. She starts out way ahead of everyone and then very steadily Senators Edwards and Obama started gaining some ground and month out before Iowa all three were polling well. That is when we saw the masterfulness of a GOOD campaign. Boots on the ground, community organizations, grassroots efforts and an inspired base caused a surge in the polls and delivered Iowa. From that point on things have been pretty steady.

JohnCP,
So you are admitting that your candidate lies and we shouldn't believe her when she tells us anything, including "Yes, yes, yes"?

My money's on Mr. Obama. he's not a hack - he's electable. hillary can't win.

A RARE moment of Honesty for Hilary Clinton. He's ahead of her in states won, pledge delegates and popular vote but for some reason he is unelectable. He came from a virtual unknown 25 points down to tie her and in many instances take the lead but somehow he can't win. What amazes me is that Hlary has gotten some people bamboozled and fooled if someone can beat YOU how dare you say they are unelectable. The unmitigated gall of someone to say that. Something else she is trying to do is down play less than double digit loss in PA by saying anything less that a win for Obama strenghtens the electability argument that he cant win. I scratch my head when I listen to Hilary I dont know which is more riduclous is that they give this woman a chance to voice nonsense or that she has actually convinced them there is merit to what she is saying. He trashed her by 30 points or more in 10 states MOST Of which are primaries. And she has the nerve to say he cant win. First of all since when does the loser gets to decide that the winner can't win.

" "Yes, yes, yes," she said when pressed about Obama's electability during a campaign debate six days before the Pennsylvania primary. "

Well I guess the Obama people finally caught Hillary telling a fib. But I guess we can forgive her, because she probably didn't want to hurt his feelings.

Even scarier than just her "umbrella" of protection over so-called middle eastern "allies" are her remarks on China as well. Looks like our little ugly duckling has grown up into a monster of a hawk. If I didn't know better, between talk of "umbrellas" over Israel, "massive retaliation" against Iran, another hundred years in Iraq with her political soulmate McMummy...and now threats of a war-causing trade conflict with China, I would think that Hillary has plans of INTENTIONALLY STARTING WORLD WAR 3. Or am I just reading into it a little too much? Yeah...silly me...how in the world could that possibly benefit someone who's biggest PACs and Federal Lobbyist donors are defense industry corpora............wait a minute........no. Yes? Maybe? In response to the terrorist carnage committed by Hamas in Israel, President Clinton has organized an anti-terrorist summit in Egypt to begin today. But other participants at the conference, and the American public as well, might be a bit surprised to learn that both the president and first lady have closely embraced an Islamic fundamentalist group in the U.S. that champions and supports Hamas. This group also openly supports, lobbies for, and defends other Islamic terrorist groups.

NEW POLL IN MICHIGAN: BARACK OBAMA IS THE BETTER CANDIDATE AGAINST MCCAIN.

Barack Obama leads McCain in Michigan 43 to 41% with 8% undecided, but Hillary is losing to McCain in Michigan 46 to 37%. Barack Obama is clearly the Democrats strongest candidate against McCain in the general election. I copied and pasted the poll below, and the Link is here:
http://www.mlive.com/elections/index.ssf/2008/04/obama_does_better_against_mcca.html

Monday April 14, 2008
LANSING, Mich. (AP) -- A new poll shows Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama doing better against Republican John McCain among Michigan voters than Democrat Hillary Rodham Clinton.

The poll by Lansing-based EPIC-MRA shows 43 percent of the 600 likely voters polled back Obama, while 41 percent back McCain. Eight percent say they'd vote for independent candidate Ralph Nader, while 8 percent are undecided.

McCain leads Clinton 46 percent to 37 percent. Ten percent say they'd vote for Nader and 7 percent are undecided.

Fifty-nine percent have a favorable opinion of McCain, while 55 percent feel that way about Obama and 45 percent about Clinton.

The poll was conducted April 3-8. It has a margin of sampling error of plus or minus 4 percentage points.

They should be conducting polls as to how Michigan voters feel about NOT being represented at the Democratic Convention since they DID have a primary. The uncommitted slot, thought to be Obama's support, was handily beaten by Hillary Clinton. Of course, now Obama doesn't want a re-vote or to allow the uncommitted to stand for him because of course Clinton has more votes. Clinton will do just fine if she is on the national ticket in both Michigan and Florida. Obama is going to be toast in most of the big states.

Your polls also had Obama beating Hillary in NH. And in California. And in Texas.

The polls are just part of the media propoganda machine. For this election cycle, that machine's target is to bring down Hillary Clinton. They are trying to do now, what they failed to do in 1998-2000 in the attempt to impeach Bill Clinton.

The Obama people in general are too stupid and blinded by their media programming to realize that the true agent of change is Hillary, and this is why the opposition to her is so strong.

Obama is just the latest creation of the Kennedy political machine only this time Kennedy has hidden behind the scenes except for key moments like after the NH primary where he pretended that his family legacy was insulted by Hillary's LBJ comments, which kicked off Obama's the Clintons are racists campaign.

Obama is out of Kennedy's Chicago machine, and Axelrod is Patrick Kennedys (RI) advisor since 1994. Obama is a carbon copy of Deval Patrick in Massachusetts, who is also being revealed as an empty suited airbag who will run to Washington to escape Mass in 2 secs if Obama gets elected.

Finally, the caucus delegates need to be reduced to 1/20th their present count as they distort the popular vote basis on which the rest of the pledged delegates were selected.

Once these realities have penetrated, the media will need to rewrite their script and come up with another angle to oppose Hillary.

And umbrellas should automatically appear over Arab "allies" to protect from loose falling nukes accidently launched from Iran. And kids should get at least a dollar from the Tooth Fairy for every enamel they leave under their pillow. And Pinnocchio's nose shouldn't grow every time she ....I mean he, tells a lie. And I should have had creamy Italian dressing instead of oil and vinegar. But, after all, I'm "too stupid" to know things like that...I haven't even figured out what an "agent of change" Hillary is !! How crazy is that? Speaking of change.....why don't we get rid of that silly caucus thingy too? And why bother with these silly election thingies, when we all know Hillary Clinton is entitled to be Quee....I mean......President. seriously, why bother?

The Golden BOY
Barack Obama "I can walk on water"!!!!!!!
Finally found out what it"s like last nights To be on the debate on MSNBC and to be Hillary Clinton.
She would be getting Drilled and Hammered over and over again By Keith Olbermann and Tim Russert (the screamer) at Hillary then ask Obama if he need a glass of water then the two of them thought its was funny about a statement on MSNBC cable news that the Clintons have "PIMPED OUT THEIR DAUGHTER CHELSEA".
MSNBC would never ask Obama any question about his friendship with William Ayers a Bomb-Throwing Terrorist, nor would they ask Obama about Jeremiah "I Hate America "Wright nor his wife"s statement "I"ve never been proud of America or ask about why Obama refusing to wear an American Flag pin.

That debate was set up to take Obama down, the taped conversation between Hannity and the commentator has been aired on every news station EXCEPT ABC AND FOX.Any time a person USES their child as a pun in political games, which do get nasty ,they are USING that person for their own personal gains .That IS WRONG ,and most American parents will say the very same thing, the word'pimped' was used wrongly, and should not have been the word used.People who reach for what should not be ,tend to get burned and scarred,IF little Chelsa is so delicate she should have stayed in London when she was drinking ( http://www.chinadaily.com.cn/english/doc/2005-04/06/content_431767.htm ) ( http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/597962/posts )her brains out and she would have escaped her Mothers USING her .

I have a question for you and your viewers

Why did ABC News conducted last nights debate and devoted 50 minutes to issues that do not matter to your voters before getting to the real issues.

The answer is that George Stephanopoulos was a Clinton Aide during bill Clinton's 1992 presidency, read more details below of his connections with the Clintons. It was unfair that a Clinton aide was part of the panel that handled the debate all to discredit Obama. What a plan.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/George_Stephanopoulos

I love America but very disappointed with the way this political storm has taken.

Mrs Clinton has a lot to answer to the people of Northern Ireland for claiming that she helped us bring peace to our country. How can she claim repeatedly to have helped negotiate our good Friday agreement. I find this absurd that she should be ashamed to be lying to the American people all to win an internal party nomination. Recently Lord Trimple, the first Northern Ireland minister and a nobel prizer winner debunked her goofy remarks

Interesting points truths. Having watched the debate, I don't think Obama is ready for a national executive position. In an old industry of mine it took 6+ years to even be the master of a merchant ship. Hillary isn't ready either, by the same token. John McCain has the experience, but I disagree with him on many issues. It is really too bad the Dems and the Repubs made the choices they did this season.

The interesting thing about you National Enquirer/Hillary fans comments is that they always pertain to a 3rd party. Never "Obama did this" or "Obama did that"...always "Rev. Wright said this" or "Ayers bombed someplace (when Obama was 6 years old)" or "rezko this.......". But tell me this, why is your candidate never held to this same standard? Why do I never hear you HillaryBillies talk about her DUMPSTER FULL of sordid sycophants? Peter F. Paul? Commerce Secretary Ron Brown? Rev. Coe? If in fact it was a crime to associate with political hustlers and other assorted questionable characters, Hillary and Bill would be on death row in a Federal supermax by now. I notice you insinuate someone came off "looking like a liar". Better to be perceived as one, than to be proven as one (Bosnia, anyone?). The only "pissed off children" I can see in this whole farce of an election are HRC, Bubba, Rendell, and a few assorted other do-nothing profiteers and snake oil salesman....certainly not Obama, and by proxy, certainly not those of us in America that want the Wizard to be forcibly ripped from behind that curtain.
