Pope Benedict XVI praised America as a land of opportunity and hope Thursday as he celebrated the first public Mass of his U.S. pilgrimage, but he lamented that the nation's promise fell short for blacks and Indians. Hope for the future, he said, "is very much a part of the American character."

Tens of thousands of worshippers filled Nationals Park on a clear spring day and cheered Benedict as he arrived in a white popemobile, standing in the back and waving. The crowd grew to 46,000, and the demand for tickets doubled the supply, organizers said.

The pope, wearing scarlet vestments, led the service from an altar erected in centerfield of the recently inaugurated baseball stadium. Rows of red-robed church leaders joined him.

Yesterday, the Pope gave a speech at the White House that impressed Bush very much. When the Pope finished, Bush leaned over and said, "Thank you, your Holiness. Awesome speech."

It's okay with me if the Pope comes to town. I don't think the Catholic church is any better or any worse than most religions, and the mass is beautiful. And I don't care that he was a member of a Nazi youth group when he was a child. Give us a break folks, he was a kid.

It's interesting that even though there is so much coverage, no one talks about what's really going on: money. Someone said that the T-shirts and bumper stickers reminded them of a Rolling Stones tour, and I think that's true.

When I was a kid, every family went to church every Sunday, and every family put money into the collection basket every Sunday, as well as "extra" donations for the nuns in Africa. My Irish relatives went to mass every day of their lives. True story. But many Catholics in the U.S. have drifted away from the church.

So why not get real: this is a fundraiser. The Pope wants Americans to come back to the church. It's like a Broadway show with the music, the costumes, the parades, the big deal. An all-male revue. Which is okay with me, except I don't think it will work.

A change of policy, particularly given the pedophiles, the sex issues, the no-sex for priests, the treatment of women as slaves, those things do not work in modern America. So Mr. Pope: great show, but you need new writers.

Fundraiser? Sounds like crass cynicism to me.

Success after 80.

***While Pope Benedict XVI's historic visit to Washington received wall to wall coverage, Sen. Barbara Boxer briefly held up a Senate resolution welcoming the pontiff because she objected to language about how the pope values "each and every human life."***

Boxer is an embarrassment.

I give her kudos. We all know that language was meant in a political context, and for the record, although the Pope speaks out for the fetuses (and I'm not making fun), he is not so vocal about what is going on in the preemptive war in Iraq or about the SCOTUS decision to renew lethal injections on the day of the Pope's arrival here. BTW, I used to be Catholic and still have the official catechism of the Catholic church. It condemns preemptive war as a great sin, and it says the death penalty should be avoided if at all possible.

To the pope, for sure.

The pope is an embarrasment. Hates gays. What about gay priests, cardinals and bishops? Hates child molestors. What about perverted cardinals, priests, nuns and bishops? Hates unmarried folks having sex. What about priests, nuns, cardinals and bishops? Values each human life? What a joke.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 04:47 PM on 04/17/2008

Well in what way does the pope value each and every human life?

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 04:43 PM on 04/17/2008

In what way does he not?

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 07:27 PM on 04/17/2008

Certain humans have less value, like gays and women. And then there's the idiotic fight against using condoms. One quote:
"The church is against condom use. Sexual relations between a man and a woman have to be natural. I have never seen a little dog using a condom during sexual intercourse with another dog". Well, dogs don't use viagra either and don't ride bikes. This costs thousands of lifes and I bet many of them even consider AIDS as Gods punishment for living a sinful life.

And there's still good ole you are sinful even before you were born and might end up in hell. So better obey us, because we hear the words of God.

But what the pontiff clearly does NOT value is the anal virginity of American catholic boys.

WOW...what a great first impression this guy is making! In two days, he's

1) apologized for the sex scandal w/these words: "It is a great suffering for the Church in the United States and for the church in general and for me personally that this could happen," OMG...the poor, suffering church & pope!! Whatever can we do to heal their wounds?

2) Lamented America's 'injustices' against blacks and native americans. I guess he knows what he's talking about, being the leader of an organization who persecuted & murdered MILLIONS of heathens over the last 2000 years 'n all.

3) Today, he blamed the sex scandal on America's "moral breakdown".

WTF is up with this guy? How on earth can any catholic defend/admire him? Where's his contrition? Where's his compassion? WHERE'S THE REAL APOLOGY FOR THE SEX SCANDAL?

Nowhere, I guess. Instead, he's blaming US for the scandal, and bitching us out for our past injustices while ignoring the ones purpetrated by his own "nation".

Yeah..these are the kinds of messages American Catholics were hoping for. Surely this will unite all of you & bring thousands of dedicated, non-pedopheliatic young men into the seminaries to create the priests you need so desparately need.

What a disaster!!!

I read that he met separately today with several victims and apologized personally to each of them. I think this is a big step in the right direction.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 08:06 PM on 04/17/2008

A question: didn't he apologize to the victims first of all? And a comment: blaming the sex scandal on America's "moral breakdown" is not taking moral responsibility.

Pedophiles of the world unite!

Is it any wonder mankind is coming to a rapid end when we have millions willing to worship a silly dressed man who professes to speak for some God way-up in the sky, that pray as you might can't do a thing for you.

What fools us motals be.

If this so-called speaker for God was worth anything he would of spit in bush's face and denounced him for the war-criminal he is instead of lending any legitimacy by visiting him.

Multiply and fill the earth .... we did that in 1960. The good Pope should be telling us we are too many, and poverty stricken people in the third world need to do some family planning. I am not impressed by the numbers of people in attendance. No doubt, without control, there will be more. Where is their food going to come from? Heaven?

To the anti-Catholic commenter here:

As Arthur Schlesinger Jr. observed, anti-Catholicism is the only prejudice in America that is still socially acceptable. Please try to curb your bigotry -- otherwise, you might as well join the KKK, for you share their views. There is no difference between making racist comments about black folks and making anti-Catholic comments. Both betray bigotry and ignorance on the part of those who make them.

Thank you for your comments Jack. I used to spout off with ignorant rants about the church. Then I decided to look deeper. I took a second look at my preconceived notions. What I discovered challenged everything I thought I knew about the church. And the more I learned, the more I grew. And much to my endless surprise I grew to love the church. Yes, me, the anti-Catholic, anti-Christian, liberal feminist., grew a crush on catholicism. In time the crush grew, despite my efforts to forget about it. But finally I had to give in. I was in love and I was done for. I became a Catholic in 2004. So this card carrying liberal feminist is here to tell all you Catholic-hecklers to back off!

What to call it?......

Oh of course! God-n-Guns!

There's a difference.
Black folks are black and they can't change that.
Catholics choose to be catholics even after they know about the boys getting raped and the church covering it up and perpetuating it.

And folks send their kids to public schools in America even after a goverrnment-sponsored report shows that sexual mistreatment of children in public schools exceeds that of Catholic priests by at least an order of magnitude. See the report
http://www.ed.gov/rschstat/research/pubs/misconductreview/report.pdf

Read this report and then ask yourself -- would my kids be better off in a parochial school?

BTW - Your "Look over there" defense of the catholic pedophiles is really quite weak.
