New York Times Co. CEO Janet Robinson has a message for Rupert Murdoch: Bring it on.

On the Times Co.'s just-completed quarterly results call, Robinson fielded a question about the threat Murdoch's reconfigured Wall Street Journal poses to the Times . The question came from an analyst who wanted to know if Robinson agreed with former Times executive editor Howell Raines, who wrote in Portfolio that Murdoch intends to use the Journal to eat the Times's lunch.

"I think we've always competed with national newspapers, certainly with USA Today and The Wall Street Journal," Robinson ventured cautiously.

No shit...That former ad salesperson for a sports mag is way, way out of her league trying to challenge Rupert. Like him or not, he is smart and powerful. He has made the most dramatic change on NYC newspapers in their history, from standing down ITU local 6 in the 70s to owning the NY Post to owning the WSJ to making the NYT cower in fear of a hostile takeover...If the NYT wants to take on Rupert, they better get more guns than Pinch and judy....

If Murdoch is going to "bring it on" he better do so quickly. The Times may soon be out of business, if their latest financial results are any indication.

Head to head, Rupert will kick Pinch's butt all over NYC...Pinch and his mommy ceo don't stand a chance if Rupert really goes after them.

Maybe, as a warning shot across the bow, she will decide to have the NY Times do some actual journalism.

But I will believe it when I see it.

The New York Times Company is circling the outer rim of its death spiral. Not unexpectedly, first quarter results were disappointing, even considering the difficult business environment.

Management was ready with spin to explain away the problems as not its fault. CEO Janet Robinson ascribed the weak advertising revenues to the economic downturn magnified by the effects of "secular change in our business." Robinson added that they are "diligently managing their business for the long term and transitioning into the digital era."

Ad revenue fell nearly 10%.

Thanks to her keen sense of leadership, the NYT will remain the standard of outstanding news organizations that is adding thousands of readers a year. The latest whispers of internal troubles are simply rumors and nothing more.

Falling circulation, fewer ads, plagirism, hoaxes not facts in NYT's stories aren't rumors. The NYT has not been considered to be a newspaper of record for over a decade. The NYT's managment isn't organized. The NYT's spiral down to its death is getting steeper & much faster. The pieces of the NYT will splatter into tiny fragments when it crashes & ceases publication. The questions aren't how Mr Murdoch will drive the NYT out of business & if the NYT will cease publication but when will the NYT, at last, cease publication. Mr Murdoch has been telling us how he will destroy the NYT. HP & other MSM are giving us the details of Mr Murdoch's plans as he implements his plans to destroy the NYT. The NYT's death will be well documented.
Ms R's feisty words won't save the NYT from its spiral into oblivion. The NYT's old reputation as a reliable newspaper of record is long dead & gone.

ooh, a steel cage match! On one side, the grey old lady, the enabler and propagandists of countless wars, including the Spanish American and Iraq wars versus the young upstart, the jmedia tycoon from down under who makes William Randolph Hearst look like Atticus Finch. Who will win? Who will make more money! America is dying to know! Stay tuned, but most importantly; CONSUME what they're serving. You know you love it.

It looks like the robot got the wrong program activated. The "Girl" equally bad, my robotic friend, she has just employed William Kristol, the main ideologue and architect of the cancerous transformation of the US over the last decade.
