The New York Post today brings two separate, but potentially related, Katie Couric stories: one on rumors of a possible Katie Couric memoir, another on the reason why Couric may be leaving CBS: a ratings free fall.

Keith Kelly writes that, on the heels of her moving account in this week's Newsweek about her husband's death, and of course the drama at CBS News, Couric would be "golden" in the publishing world:

Given the turmoil, and her moving first-person article in the current issue of Newsweek, speculation has been swirling in recent days that her next career move could be a memoir, which would likely fetch millions.

Couric hasn't yet penned a serious non-fiction tome, but she has expressed interest in writing a memoir, said one source close to her. The source, however, insists there are no specific plans right now.

She did write several well-received children's books for Doubleday a few years ago. She'd would have a lot of themes to work with - from the turmoil of being in the hot seat at a time of great media upheaval to the wrenching personal story of being a single mom with two young daughters.

Of course, a critical part of why Katie may be leaving CBS (and able to write this rumored memoir) is that the ratings of her broadcast are tanking. She reportedly lost 1.1 million viewers in 2007, and the Post's Michael Starr reports that the skid won't stop:

Katie Couric's well-documented doubts about staying much longer as "CBS Evening News" anchor are apparently tied to more bad ratings news.

The ratings slide that began when she started 19 months ago is getting worse.

Couric is down 10 percent year-to-date.

All three network newscasts are down - ABC's "World News" and NBC's "Nightly News" are both off by 1 percent this year.

But, as the advertising trade magazine Media Life reported yesterday, the ABC and NBC "declines represent the natural attrition of nightly news audiences. Couric's indicate a flight of viewers."

ETP's Rachel Sklar crunched the numbers last week, charting the decline:

The ratings have dropped under Couric, even while Brian Williams and Charlie Gibson are jockeying for position light-years in front of her, sometimes by as much as 3 million viewers more than her, each. Sure, she's been buoyed by the election but everyone has -- the fact remains that, as I pointed out last fall, this year's high-water mark numbers are last-year's nadirs (back in Feb. 2007, falling below 7 million was shocking. Now, breaking 7 million is the shocker -- something Couric's newscast did early on in primary season, but which was eroded over the next few months. Last week, her broadcast clocked 5.9 million viewers -- higher than her lowest-ever number of 5.46 million in the week of Sept. 3rd, but still not the kind of numbers CBS is used to, or needs).

Is the free-fall of CBS ratings all Katie's fault? Of the three networks, one of them WILL be LAST. , The public gets its news 24/7----- Kate, take the 15 million and run, with a Big Smile on your face.

One would have had to have led a life of some consequence to justify documenting it in a memoir. Try accomplishing something, Katie, and get back to us in twenty years.

Stop it Stop it PLEASE.

Why all these negative hateful comments about Katie??

Are you all jealous?
My mother always told me that if I can't say something nice about someone, don't say ANYTHING.

I am truly sorry that Katie Couric lost her husband -- however, that said, how can anyone suggest she is like other struggling single parents? Her wealth and celebrity allow her to provide for her children like few people in the world. She doesn't come home from a mind-numbing job having to shop, cook, clean, chauffer kids around, take care of sick kids (missing work to do it), and all the rest of what goes with parenting year upon year with no help, no vacations, no sense that the rug could be ripped out from under her at any moment. THAT is what single-parenthood is like for the rest of us.

Even if she screws up everything else she does career-wise, including a memoir, she is still part of a privileged few that made it to the top of the evil media empire.

Sean McManus (CBS Sports honcho with NO NEWS CRED) & Les Moonves (CBS Corporate Honcho with NO NEWS CRED), the driving force behind the evisceration of CBS and recruitment of Couric (News Reader with NO NEWS CHRED) need to be shown the door as well.

She is a great face for America in the world. So please bear that in mind: We don't have too many friendly faces to show to the world.

Katie should use just one of her faces instead of two.

Well, this IS, after all, what it is all about, isn't it? Money, celebrity, the cult of personality. Ah, what I wouldn't pay for an evening when the nightly news is announced with the familiar refrains of Beethoven's 9th and followed by non-descript presenters who used the skills of objectivism instead of big hair and rolling eyeballs, vocal intonations and grimaces, to communicate the essence of the news about world and national events; leaving chit chat about sex scandal and run away teenage girls to talk shows later-on.
It seems that the line blurred when the FCC no longer required license holder to present journalistic public affairs and instead we see "news" departement become profit centers for their corporate owners. Fortunately we have the internet and if one uses it wisely one can actually find some fairly good reporting and investigation. Of course one has to put away one's natural monkey inclination towards self gratification and interest in other monkey business to dig into issues that transcend immediate gratification all the time...at least long enough to read a few dissenting opinions and positions, but HA! that would only take my mind off of Britany's beaver, March Madness and a desire to see my neighbor as inferior. Cheers.
Can hardly wait to hear how much Couric will get for an advance on her sure to be upcoming book..that should take up a few more minutes in the glitter self-reflecting world of modern broadcast journalism..ha!

I agree that the deregulation of broadcasting is directly responsible for the de-evolution of news journalism into 'infotainment' where the reason it exists is to generate profits for the corporate owner using any means necessary and to hell with any mission to educate and inform. Sometimes the free market does NOT produce the best outcome for the commons, sometimes the path of least resistance to advertising revenue per moment of air time does not account for the cost to a society that is continually misinformed, deceived, and manipulated by 'news' organizations that serve up fluff, dreck, and propaganda that serves the bottom line of the network owners - like an adult jingling the car keys before a baby.

Couric was just a more extreme manifestation of the 'infotainment' approach to news.
