Sandra Bullock And Husband Jesse Hit By Drunk Driver

GLOUCESTER, Mass. — Sandra Bullock and her husband were unhurt after a head-on crash with a drunken driver, police said Saturday.

The actress and her husband, Jesse James of TV's "Monster Garage," were being driven in a sport-utility vehicle Friday night when a station wagon crossed the center line and hit them, said Gloucester police Lt. Jerry Cook.

Both vehicles were totaled, but no one was hurt. The vehicles were traveling 15 to 20 mph, Cook said.

The other car was driven by Lucille Gatchell, who registered a blood-alcohol level of 0.20 percent, more than twice the legal limit of 0.08 percent, Cook said.

She was held by Gloucester police overnight and released Saturday on personal recognizance. She is to be arraigned Tuesday in Gloucester District Court.

Gatchell did not immediately return a call seeking comment Saturday. Calls to representatives for Bullock were not immediately returned.

Bullock, 43, was "gracious" and concerned about whether Gatchell was OK, Cook said.

The actress, who starred in such films as "Speed" and "Miss Congeniality," is in Massachusetts filming the romantic comedy "The Proposal."

Sandra Bullock is one of my favorites. I am glad she and her husband were not injured in this incident. Hope the other person has learned a lesson from this also

Given her popularity and the good will Ms. Bullock enjoys among the America public in general, I hope that she will take advantage of this unpleasant incident and use her position as a celebrity to remind people that every year, thousands of Americans are victims of drunk drivers and most of them are not as fortunate as she and her husband. This is one of those opportunities which has become all too rare in our society - when a person can use their celebrity status to help others with no apparent self-serving motivation.

DUI is dangerous, but it's not the only dangerous behavior we see on our roads. I'm sorry if this offends anyone, but I'm much more outraged by the behavior of people who drive like one-handed A-holes when they are stone-cold sober, than someone who makes a bad decision while under the influence of a popular and legal drug called alcohol. It's time to stopping being so pathetically PC, and start holding everyone who drives dangerously accountable, not just those who find themselves on the wrong end of a public witchhunt driven by MADD, SADD, or whatever PC group is lobbying for ever-harsher penalties for a specific type of dangerous driving.
Which rich or famous person will have to die before we hold everyone accountable for their bad decisions behind the wheel? If Britney runs someone over while driving and talking on her Cellie, will that person be just as dead as if Britney was drunk?

Having been the victim of drunk drivers, not once, but twice, I can empathize with Sandy. I have zero compassion for anyone who cuases a DUI to occur. Its selfish, stupid, arrogant, ignorant, deadly, illegal, need I go on? There is nothing funny or sexy about it. Those who refuse to obey the rules of the road, don't deserve a liscence. Period. My accident left me with parial paralasys to the face, eye, nerve damage to my legs, a clot that could become fatal if it so chooses to travel. I took my drunk drivers to court. ya know what? tha damn mo courts sided with the drivers. Talk about a gross injustice. its not that they got off scott free, No, they got fined, thie insurance co, paid a little, but it doesn't make up for what I now suffer on a permanent and daily basis. Every day I can't see well, walk properly, get stared at, as if I am a drunk, for nerve damage to my legs, is a reminder of that accident. They, walked away, no damages to thier body, they laughed, drove by three times to see if I was dead, but never stopped. Sandy, sue the crap out of them and make them an example. Its the only way people like that get the message.

Well the idea of being hit head on by a drunk driver in a less than equal vehicle still scares the hell out of me! That no one was PHYSICALLY injured os a great thing. I might be on anti anxiety drugs or a stiff one after that hit! Glad the drunk is off the street before she kills kids too.

not for long. Massachusetts seems to go easy on drunk drivers. I don't have the stats handy, but the courts are filled with repeat offenders.

Not exactly, not anymore. Now a 2nd (or 3rd?) time getting caught drunk driving (& that documented by a straight cop) is an automatic TWO YEARS TIME and it's retroactive, so those repeat offenders are looking at 2 yrs in prison if they get caught drunk driving again, even if they were sober 20 years in between. That's the law, but it's kind of randomly relevant because corruption runs wide and deep here. This is aside from the huge difference what kind of lawyer you can afford makes anywhere in the American 'justice' system.

Under the circumstances, the demonized common "criminal" stigma makes me wonder if I am missing something:
