Hillary Clinton's senior campaign strategist on Sunday defended as true private remarks made by the senator in which she blamed her electoral defeats on a Democratic activist base with whom she has disagreed.

Geoff Garin, who took over the reigns of the campaign several weeks ago from Mark Penn, sought to diffuse anger and concern over Clinton's comments -- which were reported by The Huffington Post -- by casting them as nothing more than legitimate political analysis.

"The truth is that we agree with MoveOn [the Democrat group Clinton singled out] on lots of issues, disagree with them on some," said Garin. "One of them is they've endorsed Senator Obama and they have been very effective in these caucuses."

Asked to specify exactly which issues Clinton and Moveon had disagreements, Garin demurred, saying simply it was a "particular set of foreign policy issues," not "everything." Pressed to discuss when, as Clinton claimed, MoveOn had "flooded" caucuses and "intimidated" voters into supporting Obama, he attempted to sidestep the question.

"I don't want to... I'm here for two weeks now, so this comment was made in, I believe, at the beginning of March," he said. "But, look, the truth is Senator Clinton, as she said in that other clip, respects the right of MoveOn to be involved in this process, and respects the role that activists play in our party. I think the larger point is that when you move from the caucuses to the primaries where participation is much, much greater, she has done extremely well."

Garin's appearance on Meet The Press came two days after the Huffington Post reported on Clinton's remarks, which were made at a small closed-door fundraiser after Super Tuesday.

"Moveon.org endorsed [Sen. Barack Obama] -- which is like a gusher of money that never seems to slow down," Clinton said at the meeting of donors. "We have been less successful in caucuses because it brings out the activist base of the Democratic Party. MoveOn didn't even want us to go into Afghanistan. I mean, that's what we're dealing with. And you know they turn out in great numbers. And they are very driven by their view of our positions, and it's primarily national security and foreign policy that drives them. I don't agree with them."

On Saturday, the Clinton campaign was first asked to address the issue. During a conference call with reporters, the senator's chief spokesman Howard Wolfson noted that he too was a member of MoveOn, and that any differences between Clinton and the progressive group would be resolved should she end up the Democratic nominee.

"I am a member of MoveOn... I participated in the Moveon primary where they endorsed Sen. Obama. I obviously voted for Sen. Clinton... Sen. Clinton agrees with MoveOn on some issues she disagrees on other issues," he said. "I assume and believe [that if] Sen. Clinton [is the nominee], that we will be able to unite the party behind us and go forward with unity and strength in the general election....we believe that progressive organizations like MoveOn do and can and will play a critical part in that process..."

If Obama could handle Clinton challenging every move as well then I think Obama / Clinton would work. The problem is that it makes too much damn sense, and the other no matter who they are will wait in the wings on the off chance for 2012. Even define the roles. Have Clinton focus on the economy and let Obama and Nun focus on Foreign Policy. I also think that if we are serious about uniting then we need to reach across the aisle and tap some republicans for the administration. It is not by words but by actions we will hear the call to unite in the common cause of America.

To those who pint to Hillary's Bosnia story, there is a reason Obama let it go. His books in particular the autobiography is a work of fiction and Obama was forced to admit it and he does not want it to become a national issue. First he could get sued by the publisher and have to return some of that $4 million he made last year.

Obama is not the second coming! I would really love to see a Clinton/ Obama ticket as I think it would take that activist advocate role and place it in the V.P. who whose job it would be to challenge Clinton on every issue. It would be a sure fire winner and it would bring the internal debate public and keep the electrorate involved and congress answerable. I think Clinton would be more comfortable in being challenged by Obama every day and accept it than the other way around.

Hillary seems to be pandering to the Republican right with her comments about Moveon. Moveon is the boggyman for the right. Senator Clinton and the DLC are misreading the American public I believe. When she attacks the left she is alienating the electorate she will need in the General Election. But she has bought into the DLC's flawed strategy of pandering to the right. Believing the right will come to her side and the left will have no choice but to choose her. This is the reason the DLC and Hillary will lose in November, because Americans when faced with a Republican or a Democrat pretending to be a Republican (DLC) they will chose a Republican. Ask Harold Ford if you dont believe me.

Here's the irony: moveon was founded to support her husband! It's very name is a short version of the sentiment that the country should "move on" from the Bill affair with Monica and get on to more important things. She didn't denounce them when they supported Bill. Seems like she would applaud them using their "independent judgement" to support Obama, since that's her justification for why superdelegates should go with her.

I hoped for Edwards, but since he is out , we have a choice of two others who have pretty much the same agenda, that is, keep on financing Israel so they can continue to grab all the lands that they think they have a right to and probably keep Nafta as is. So I think I'll go for the lesser of the two evils and vote for Hillary. At least Bill did a good job when he was President. I also got tired of the E-mails from Move-on ( an otherwise good organization) urging me to vote for Obama. I would vote any Democrat in just to keep the neo-cons OUT! Obama in the future when he has a thicker resume. I hope that whoever gets in will tone down Nafta and stop enabling Israel to cause friction all over because they think they are the chosen ones and everybody else be damned.

AKA

"Well the guy Hillary's screwing was a good President, so she'll be one too!"

Unghh...

"I hope that whoever gets in will tone down Nafta and stop enabling Israel to cause friction all over because they think they are the chosen ones and everybody else be damned."

Obama's already said that nafta doesn't protect workers and needs to be changed. He's also said that Isreal needs to be realistic if it wants piece and that would mean giving up some of it's claims and sincerely look for middle ground.

The word denounced keeps showing up in these posts. Where did Hillary Clinton DENOUNCE Moveon.org?

Denounce: "To condemn openly as being evil or reprehensible."

Somehow you find that meaning in her words? Please. Now on the other hand, that is precisely how you treat HRC.

Just another example of Hillary's cut-off-your-nose-to-spite-your-face strategy, eh? How fuckin' brilliant can you get?

And she wants to run the country?! I don't think sooooooo.

It's amazing that there are any Democrats out there who still believe anything that comes out of the Clinton campaign's mouth, but then again, there are some people you can fool all of the time, etc.

If the Clintons were trying to persuade superdelegates that Hillary was more electable than Obama, this seemed to put the nail in the coffin on that argument. How can the Clintons ever win without the support of the anti-war left wing of the party?

Poor man....I never thought I would feel sorry for anyone working for Clinton, but this guy was a mess. My man Axelrod blew him out of the water. Somebody should have told Garin that he needed to get his facts straight before coming on National Television. That's just more proof of how The Clinton machine needs some serious tune up.

Someone told me once that you can put lipstick on a dog and dress him up but he is still a dog. Hillary has doen so many things and said so many things that we all have seen not to be anything but nasty hateful and not true. Yet those who "believe" in her and will go to the mat for her believing everything she has misrepresented and adapted to fit her desire to manipulate these people. It reminds me of the frustration I felt when for the second time people lined up and actually voted for George Bush like he would keep us safe from the big bad guys. The western personna Bush projected fooled many and the levels of fear and the color codes and all of the hype about how we were just the minute away from terrorists breaking our doors down. We all remember well the duct tape and plastic. Now the people who follow Hillary like she will bring back the good old days and she cannot.

As an Obama supporter and someone who once had occasion to have Geoff Garin do some polling, I have to say he gets good (accurate) numbers, knows how to read them and knows how to advise a campaign wisely.

He's also a class act who somehow escaped the all too common habit of pollsters/media consultants/strategists to leak and embellish, whether to claim credit for a victory or shift blame for a defeat.

In essence, he's the antithesis of Mark Penn, Harold Ickes, Maggie Williams, Howard Wolfson, and the entire Clinton senior staff. Had Senator Clinton hired him earlier, the rumors of the inevitability of her nomination might have proven true. But then, had she displayed such management skills, she wouldn't have been Hillary Clinton.

With all due respect, Jeffersonian1, if Garin's a class act (translation: good guy), unless he's working to undermine her campaign and prevent her bid for the presidency, why is he on her payroll?

It's this kind of associating, with the money going in this direction with characters like her that I have trouble with. We already know what she is, but if he's helping her to realize her further dreams of power (and getting paid for it), what does that make him?

With all due respect back at ya, JMorgan, while I'm a strong Obama backer, I don't think Senator Clinton is all that bad (managerially challenged and unelectable, yes, but look who's sitting up there now).

From my perspective, when one weighs Senator Obama's assets and liabilities and compares them to Senator Clinton's, the choice is clear: Obama by a mile. That being said, I recognize that some folks I respect and like and share fundamental values with did the math and came out with a different answer. They're wrong, of course, .but I don't think they are doing it for the money or the power -- they just miscalculated by a little.
