Sarah Ngewerume was driven to the river by despair.

She said she had seen gangs loyal to Zimbabwe's longtime president, Robert Mugabe, beating people -- some to death -- in the dusty roads of her village. She said Mugabe loyalists were sweeping the countryside with chunks of wood in their hands, demanding to see party identification cards and methodically hunting down opposition supporters.

"It was terrifying," said Ms. Ngewerume, a 49-year-old former shopkeeper.

Last week she waded across the Limpopo River, bribed a man fixing a border fence on the other side and slipped into a nearby South African farm.

She was among the latest desperate arrivals in what South Africa's biggest daily newspaper is calling "Mugabe's Tsunami," a wave of more than 1,000 people every day who are fleeing Zimbabwe across the Limpopo to escape into South Africa.

Please! - do have some compassion and HELP by sending out the articles and personal reports so that something can/may be done. "I am one. I cannot do everything, ---but I can do something.. And because I cannot do everything, I will not refuse to do the something that I can do. What I can do, I should do. And what I should do, by the grace of God, I will do." - Edward Everett Hale

Please spread the word and publicize the very real plight and terror of the people of Zimbabe -

Letter from Zimbabwe sent in by John Winter Part 4

"If only we knew how bad it really was we could have helped in some way".
[I know we chose to stay here and that some feel we deserve what's coming to us]
For now,--- we ourselves have food, shelter, a little fuel and a bit of money for the next meal - but what is going to happen next? Will they start on our houses? All property is going to belong to the State now. I want to send out my Title Deeds to one of you because if they get a hold of those, I can't fight for my rights.

Censorship!----We no longer have SW radio [which told us everything that was happening] because the Government jammed it out of existence " we don't have any reporters, and no one is allowed to photograph. If we had reporters here, they would have an absolute field day. Even the pro-Government Herald has written that people are shocked, stunned, bewildered and blown mindless by the wanton destruction of many folks homes, which are supposed to be 'illegal' but for which a huge percentage actually do have licenses.

Part 3
Letter from Zimbabwe sent in by John Winter

The petrol queues are a reality, the pall of smoke all around our city is a reality, the thousands of homeless people sleeping outside in 0 Celsius with no food, water, shelter and bedding are a reality. Today a family approached me, brother of the gardener's wife with two small children. Their home was trashed and they will have to sleep
outside. We already support 8 adult people and a child on this property, and electricity is going up next month by 250% as is water.

How can I take on another family of 4 -----and yet how can I turn them away to sleep out in the open?
I am not asking you for money or a ticket out of here - I am asking you to FACE the fact that we are in deep and terrible danger and want you please to pass on our news and pictures. So PLEASE don't just press the delete button! Help best in the way that you know how.

Do face the reality of what is going on here and help us SEND OUT THE WORD.. The more people who know about it, the more chance we have of the United Nations coming to our aid. Please don't ignore or deny what's happening. Some would like to be protected from the truth BUT then, if we are eliminated, how would you feel?

I'm posting a letter I received from Zimbabwe. I am a former South African resident. I am not going to edit the letter in any way but I will need to post it in three parts. It is horrifying and heart-wrenching.
Part 1
Letter from Zimbabwe sent in by John Winter

I reckon that these are the last days of TKM and ZPF. The darkest hour is always before dawn.
We are all terrified at what they are going to destroy next........I mean they are actually ploughing down brick and mortar houses and one white family with twin boys of 10 had no chance of salvaging anything when100 riot police came in with AK47's and bulldozers and demolished their beautiful house - 5 bedrooms and pine ceilings - because it was "too close to the airport", so we are feeling extremely insecure right now.

You know - I am aware that this does not help you sleep at night, but if you do not know - how can you help? Even if you put us in your own mental ring of light and send your guardian angels to be with us - that is a help - but I feel so cut off from you all knowing I cannot tell you what's going on here simply because you will feel uncomfortable. There is no ways we can leave here so that is not an option.

I have a friend who sometimes works in Zimbabwe and regularly corresponds with people who live there, who says that one problem is that most of the people who live there are very good natured, non-violent, unfailingly polite, and are generally the kind of people who prefer to "wait and see". They approached this last vote with such hope. It's terrible that a man who helped the country gain independence years ago has shown himself to be such a cruel despot. I feel for the people who are suffering for their beautiful Zim.

Interesting, how some of the formerly posted 18 comments have 'disappeared.' Guess the truth about leftist hypocrisy was too much for some? Where are the tens of thousands in the major cities to march in protest against this LONG-RUNNING crime against humanity in Zimbabwe? Where is the liberal outrage and anger? When it comes to a certain Middle Eastern country, so-called 'leftists' march in solidarity against the only democracy in the entire Mideast...yet they cannot muster enough energy to deal with a GENUINE tragedy like Mugabe's nightmarish Zimbabwe? Shameful.

ZenJu, its quite a stretch to make this an anti liberal issue. There isn't exactly a groundswell of outrage coming from the right either. Sadly, most people on both sides are ignorant about what goes on in Africa.

ZenJu, Why do you make this an issue about liberals? Where are American conservatives? Why aren't they marching in the streets by the tens of thousands, protesting what is happening in Zimbabwe? Why has the Bush administration been so quiet? Now, do you see how absurd your partisan attack is?

Yes, what is happening in Zimbabwe is awful and Mugabe needs to be eliminated, but this is an issue far off the radar of most Americans. As far as Americans of most political persuasions are concerned, Zimbabwe might as well be on Mars. If you don't like Mugabe, I suggest you go down there and eliminate him yourself, instead of demanding the U.S. play international policeman.

Your reference to a "certain Middle Eastern country," seems a true non sequiteur. If you are reffering to Israel, why not just say so? While you are at it, you can cite some specific examples of the liberals who you claim are marching in solidarity against that "certain Middle Eastern democracy" and you can tell us how they represent all liberals.

Yeesh, where do I begin? In London, I have encountered many, many people across the left side of the political spectrum who take part in anti-Israel actions by the thousands. In demonstrations in London, you will find so-called "progressives" cheering for Hizbullah--as I personally witnessed in 2006. I agree that Zimbabwe should be a vocal concern to ALL, liberal or conservative, and I speak as a liberal--a Jewish liberal who sees that many of my fellow "leftists" lose all reason and perspective when it comes to Israel. Interesting.

ZenJu, thanks for your reply. As you discerned, my concern was that all liberals should not be painted with a broad brush. The kind of people who would go to demonstrations in London (or anywhere in the West), and express the strong opinions that bother you, are more passionate and motivated than most liberals. But, they do represent the long developing distaste for the Likud style Zionism that has become so influential in Israel and America. After so many years, Americans are looking at such activities as the Israeli settlements in the occupied lands and we are very uncomfortable with that. When Israel reigns in such Zionists, it will have a brighter future.

As a Democratic Precinct Committee Officer since 1979, I know many American Jews who speak within the party, to moderate the anger and frustration engendered by Likud Zionism. But, there is no thought of turning to reactive conservatism to quash the Palistinians.

Keep in mind, Bill (the goat) Clinton, and his wife are ardent supporters of Robert Mugabe. Clinton (the goat) once described him as Africa's future. Thankfully, president Bush has actually done something positive for Africa instead of leftist rhetoric.

Another Rwanda in the making? Who cares...no oil there. No significant market for the arms industry. let's talk about who loves America most.

This is heartbreaking on many levels.

It won't be another Rwanda, another Kenya maybe, but the situation is very different from Rwanda's in the early 90s.

It's amazing that thousands of people comment on those "manufactured distraction" issues between Clinton and Obama, and all of two people comment on a story about a Dictator who has yet to allow his government to publish election results from weeks ago, and has just imported about $2 million worth of weapons even though his Country is suffering massive inflation, starvation, and migration (about a quarter of the population has left).

WAKE UP America.

Those of you who are in the Save Darfur crowd...make sure you go read up on Rwanda and the Congo and the rest of Sub-Sarahan Africa as well. We've been ignoring African genocide and suffering for a long time, and we need to acknowledge and learn from all of cases to stop it in the future.

Great comments!

Zim' was once an amazingly productive country. An exporter of food and cotton as a matter of fact. We cannot even imagine the suffering these people are facing. Uncle Bob took the "nanny state" to its most horrific extreme. Caolas's call of "WAKE UP America" is spot.

Letter From Zimbabwe Part 2
Letter from Zimbabwe sent in by John Winter

I ask that you all pray for us in the way that you know how, and let me know that you are thinking of us and sending out positive vibes... that's all. You can't just be in denial and pretend/believe it's not going on.
To be frank with you, it's genocide in the making and if you do not believe me, read the Genocide Report by Amnesty International which says we are - IN level 7 - (level 8 is after it's happened and everyone is in
denial).

If you don't want me to tell you these things-how bad it is"then it means you have not dealt with your own fear, but it does not help me to think you are turning your back on our situation. We need you, please, to get the news OUT that we are all in a fearfully dangerous situation here. Too many people turn their backs and say - oh well, that's what happens in Africa. This Government has GONE MAD and you need to help us publicize our plight--- or how can we be rescued? It's a reality!

I hope that some of us with children of our own, and babies in the family imagine that this is us, trying to escape death with the lives of our children hanging in the balance. heartbreaking, and extremely frightening.

If only there was oil under the sand, maybe we could "liberate" these people.
