WASHINGTON — Barack Obama raised $41 million in March and had $42 million available to spend against Democratic rival Hillary Rodham Clinton in April, campaign finance reports filed Sunday show.

Clinton aides said late Sunday she would report raising about $20 million in March and that she had more than $8 million for the primary available at the beginning of April.

Overall, Obama had $51 million in the bank at the end of March, with nearly $9 million of that available only for the general election.

The money positioned Obama to undertake an expensive April campaign in Pennsylvania, where he has outspent Clinton and cut into her lead. Pennsylvania votes on Tuesday.

Obama's fundraising in March led all candidates, but was still lower than the mark he set in February, when he raised more than $55 million. He has raised $235 million in his campaign.

Clinton was expected to file her report with the Federal Election Commission by the midnight deadline.

Republican John McCain's report showed he raised $15.2 million and had $11.6 million in the bank. The Arizona senator's March figures were his best fundraising performance of the campaign.

Obama spent $30.6 million in March _ a month that began with tough contests for the Illinois senator in Ohio and Texas. He lost the popular vote to Clinton in both state primaries even though he outspent her, but he emerged with more delegates in Texas.

His report showed he spent $9 million on media advertising, an amount mostly spent in final days before the March 4 Ohio and Texas primaries. Obama did spend money in March for ads in Pennsylvania and Indiana, which votes May 6. But he held off on most of his big ad spending until April, permitting him to build up his cash on hand.

Obama reported owing more than $660,000 to various vendors. Beside advertising, his other major expenses were nearly $5 million in telemarketing and $3.6 million for travel and lodging.

In keeping with his trend, California was Obama's go-to fundraising state, generating nearly $4.6 million in contributions in March. New York was next with nearly $3.2 million.

Clinton spokesman Jay Carson said $15 million of Clinton's $20 million was raised over the Internet. He said the campaign has raised $60 million over the Internet since Jan. 1. The surge of online support suggests she is attracting more small-dollar donors, but contributors who give larger amounts could also be encouraged to give online.

The March figures do not include the $2.5 million she raised last week at an Elton John concert in New York. Carson said the event's total sum included money from 6,000 new donors.

McCain in March refunded donors about $3 million in contributions, most of it money he had received for the general election. The refunds set the stage for McCain to accept about $84 million in public funds for the fall campaign. Candidates who accept public financing cannot raise money from donors for the general election campaign.

McCain's biggest expense of the month was $3 million to Fidelity & Trust Bank to finish paying off a $4 million loan that had become the focus of a stalemate between McCain and the FEC. Campaign finance regulators want to make sure McCain did not use the promise of public financing in the primary to secure the loan. McCain was eligible for public financing in the primary, but his lawyers said they did not use that eligibility as collateral.

In March, his operating expenses were $5 million, his smallest monthly expense so far this year.

McCain's March expenses ranged from $758,000 for air charters to $151.55 to a Los Angeles florist. The campaign reported a debt of $707,000, much of it outstanding American Express billings. McCain had his most fundraising success in California and Florida, each of which yielded more than $1 million.

The Obama Moment is but one of many in the overall struggle against fascism.

As we make progress, Masters inhibit that ever happening again or inhibit progress on the ground accomplished through legislation. Regardless of November's outcome, they'll learn from this. From exposed weaknesses and defeats, they learn how to take things to the next level. Military conspire with govt to bastardize war news while building up the military complex. Tv, radio, film, and education: dumbed down. Congress and unitary Executive shred Founding Documents. Even were Obama to lose the primary or election in November, continue pressing forward. Even if the masses capitulate to global fascism, loss of opportunity, loss of faith, press forward, and educate your children. Educating masses is in itself difficult, but educating this particular, dumbed down group of Americans is most difficult. Hitler Germany is the US now, and Rome at its most corrupt. Skotch the Violators' dreams before they envelop us, before others who have every legitimate right to take us down do just that.

Dear Obama Supporters - This is NOT about a DEMOCRATIC PARTY controlled by Corporate DLC pseudo Republican Neocons. It is about Senator Barack Obama and We the People.

Please take about five minutes. Read or listen to the major MSM outlets gaming the system for ratings and for their corporate masters. They MUST have a repeat of the 1968 Convention for $$$$$$$$ and for prolonged cynicism to put the sheeple back to sleep and leave governance to the professional politicians. Yes, they are gaming it by polling land lines and not cell phones where the youth are. They want to tell PA Obama supporters and leaners that it is not necessary to vote - since Clinton will win by twenty or more points....and let us keep the game going for four more months.

PA VOTERS......FOR THE SAKE OF YOUR NATION.,....END THE CORPORATE TAKEOVER OF YOUR FREEDOMS, TREASURE, AND YES OUR DEMOCRACY.

ALL DAY AND IN EVERY WAY, THEY WANT TO GAME IT CLINTON V MCCAIN. THEY WANT IT TO GO TO THE CONVENTION. THEY WANT TO DESTROY THE AUDACITY OF HOPE WITH THE YOUNG AND OLDER FORMER CYNICS WHO HAVE REINVESTED IN THEIR CITIZENSHIP.

THE TALKING HEADS TODAY ARE SHILLED THREE TO ONE AGAINST SENATOR OBAMA. THIS IS THEIR LAST DAY TO SPEAK TO THE CORPORATE CANDIDATES, CLINTON AND MC CAIN.

FELLOW OBAMA SUPPORTERS _ I first came to believe in him because I felt that my nation could be as good and as democratic as my spouse's nation. We live in MA and in his NS for six months each every year. We are in my home......an old one parts of it built throughout centuries in Plymouth MA. I am retired and at the present time, am not yet as destitute as the Neocons would like me to become.

I voted for him in the primary, and I have now sent ALL THE ALLOWABLE MAXIMUM CONTRIBUTION to his campaign. I have volunteered to telephone during several primaries. This time, I am leaving later today from BOS to PIT to help in driving elderly folks to the polls. I am 62 years old and know that really older folks need my help. I have rented a van with unlimited mileage and will work from poll opening to close. I haven't been this moved since RFK in 1968, and as a high school freshman, pamphleting door to door for JFK in 1960. I have my trusty laptop and my ATT wireless connection anywhere with me. These hucksters and gamers must end in PA. If he wins, then I think that the SD would make her candidacy impossible arithmetically.

Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton"s presidential campaign is continuing to struggle to stay ahead of its bills, finishing March with just $9.3 million in the bank for the primary, coupled with $10.3 million in debt, according to a report filed last night with the Federal Election Commission.

In contrast, Senator Barack Obama had amassed a $42 million war chest for the primary by the end of March and had less than $700,000 in unpaid bills.

Mrs. Clinton had ended February with $8.7 million in debt. She collected about $20 million in March but spent about $22 million, adding to her pile of unpaid invoices.

Her list of outstanding debts reads like a road map of the nominating contest schedule: $45,908 to World Audio & Lights in San Antonio; $4,600 to Studimo Sound in Motion in Ironton, Ohio; $43,484 to Endeavor Audio and Lighting Services in Dickson City, Pennsylvania. Mrs. Clinton even had outstanding debt from Iowa, the first nominating contest of the season, including $16,260 to Garner Printing in Des Moines.

In other notable debts, since January, Mrs. Clinton has owed $240,000 to Catalist, a for-profit company created by Howard Ickes, who is one of Mrs. Clinton"s top advisers, that has sold its voter files to both Senator Barack Obama"s presidential campaign and Mrs. Clinton"s.

If this is the way she runs her campaign...how can we trust her with POTUS?

Thank you for all of your hard work, Crozier. It's individuals like yourself that allow us late 20's-folks to let the Clinton tactics roll off of our collective backs and continue to work hard for Senator Obama.

With your dedication and effort, along with that of people from coast to coast and beyond, we will change the way American politics are conducted and viewed around the world.

Again, thank you.

He was saying the Republicans will have to go negative on Obama, ostensibly because they cannot outshine him.

Um, it's the Republican party, they already get labeled as being racists. Might have something to do with the whole party base being rich white men who have convinced poor white men to vote against their better interests.

I'd like to know how her supporters can make the argument that she is stronger in November? She has lost this race on every single level. States, popular votes, pledged delegates and fundraising. I'd say she doesn't even have enough money to pay off the superdelegates she needs. Why are the supers allowing this farce to go on?

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 09:50 AM on 04/21/2008

The Superdelegates who have not yet voted are the DLC shills who want something for their vote, and they are playing hardball - gaming the system at the cost of the party and the nation.

I'm frankly shocked that there are enough people able to throw away good money after bad on the Hilldabeast and her terribly run campaign.

As incredible as BO's fundraising numbers are, I think there's going to be a huge surge of contributions if and when he becomes the party's nominee. I'm on the sidelines in that respect at the moment. I've made relatively small contributions, but I don't think BO really needs the $$ right now. If he becomes the nominee, I'm prepared to contribute close the maximum allowable for the general election. I'd be willing to bet that the general election contributions for BO will be mind-boggling. I'm thinking in the range of $70-100 MILLION per month.

Hillary started the month 2 million in the red and she is spending like a drunken sailor in Pa. Stands to reason that she is not paying her bills, lots of small businessmen being stiffed by Hillary and the media is not even reporting on this. The U of California has her debts in bill collection and the campaign goes on, not one question ask about why she is stiffing all those small businessmen, in the ABC debates.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 09:04 AM on 04/21/2008

Both candidates have essentially offered health insurance reform. Clinton's idea of health care is forcing everyone to BUY health insurance or be fined.

I just want you youngsters to know that up until the Clinton Administration, I never paid for health care insurance because that was part of the employee benefits. Employees had to pay to get their families included but the company covered the employee.

Hillary's financials are catastrophically bad!

At the end of March she had only $8mil. cash on hand (compared to Obama's $42mil). In addition, she showed $10.3 mil. in debts (compared to Obama's $600K). In net, she was over $2 mil. in the red, BEFORE her $5 mil. loan to herself (totalling $7 mil. in debts).

Worse yet, you can bet that if she'd made any forward fundraising progress over April that her campaign would have publicized it. And regardless of what happens Tuesday, she's going to have to finance campaigns simultaneously in two states (NC & Ind.), both media and paid ground games -- and vendors are going to want their money up front this time. It wouldn't surprise me a bit if she closed out April $10-15 mil in debt.

this is ARE WE GOING TO FINALLY GET OUR ACT TOGETHER? or are we just going to keep on making the same old mistakes over and over again.

seriously. since 1980.... we have had either a BUSH or a CLINTON in the administration. and this whole thing just keeps on getting more and more f'd up!

its time to change how we do this. and voting for Hilary isn't going to do it
