I was raised a Catholic, but could not get over the Catholic church amassing all those riches while people are starving and struggling in much of the world. Is that what Christ would have done? Or, perhaps, Christ just did not have enough time.

Another thing, is that my church held bingo and other forms of gambling in it's basement while preaching to me about the money changers (a form of gambling) that Christ drove out of the temple.

I feel, rightfully or wrongfully, that there is something of a spiritual nature about us as well as all plants and animals, but I can no longer subscribe to the tenets of the Catholic Church, or any religion for that matter.

Sorry, but they'll just have to go to someone else for their money, which I'm sure they'll have no problem doing.

p.s. It's not just the Catholics. They seem to be sort of benign compared to what they were like in the past. It's all religions and some of them as preached and practiced today are truly evil and heinous.

You're correct about the spiritual nature of things. And yes, there are lots of contradictions in the way folks practice religion. It's amazing that so many can read the same book and see a whole different picture. Don't let that sour you too much, though. The spirit can help you identify truth and find your way. A little faith can help tune your receiver.

I was born and raised in a big city and lived most of my life around "Catholic"friends, aquaintances and neighbors.I was baptised as a Lutheran.but had a minimum of religious teaching foisted upon me,I would guess becuase I lived my childhood in some pretty severe poverty.
I grew up eventualy casting away all religious concepts because,in the long run I fealt they were just down right silly!
One of the reasons I came to this conclusion is I tried to put myself in the shoes of and imagine the mindset of Catholics, but, since the ritualism of Catholicism was not ingrained in me from birth,I simply could not comprehend it.
I looked at the photoleading into this post and thought,Just what the hell is all of this utterly-at least to me-ridiculous and silly looking symbolism and dress about?
Here's a man sitting in a throne attired in all kinds of frills including lace at the hem of his robe, with a man on each side of him dressed in almost eaqualy feminine attire of robes lace and frills.
And I ask myslef,What the hell is this all about????
What the hell does this have to do with morality ,compassion, and human dignity.
It would seem to me there are better ways to exhibit these things,if that is what they are trying to do,than exhibitionism and osttentaciousness.

rroy, the "frills" made you think. If nothing else, you started thinking of things that you could instead of what they do to exhibit morality, compassion and human dignity.

Huh??That's a strange response!
All my life I've heard from religious practitioners about how they are a moral compass, and dedicated advocates of the poor and suffering. With this, religions, especially the Catholic Religion, have persistantly engaged in exhibitions of ornate bejeweled and gold symbolism, one church trying to outdo the other in it's extravagance and ornateness!
Just what the hell does have to do with morality and care of the downtrodden and berieved?

Just have some more kids. That's the answer to everything. Doesn't matter if you're not able to feed them. Live in a cardboard shack in Brazil? Have some more kids.

One of the problems here, and a big problem at that, is that there are just too many damn people on the earth fighting over limited resources, and it is about to get really nasty. So, make all the baby's you want, but realize that you are part of the problem, and the earth is about to teach you and people like you a lesson. It's too bad that the rest of us have to suffer along.

Fortunately for me, I have lived during some of the better times. I hope my kids can do the same. I'm not so sure about my grandkids... I hope so. Time seems to be running out. Buckle up!

Screw the
Pope
He is quaint but out of touch of most of
his fans singing hallelujahs at the feet of the Pope.

Considering the fact that he, more than any other Catholic official, took on the issue and seems to be trying to solve the problem as much as possible, this is nothing more than slander. Who wrote this crap, Ann Coulter?

Bullshit. He is in this scandal up to his neck. He continues to hide perpetrators, he was the enforcer of secrecy before he became pope, his church continues to fight tooth and nail over every penny with those who were abused, not a single bishop has been tossed for their crucial roles in all of this... This turd deserves no slack. He hasn't done squat to solve anything.

This type of link on Huffington.com is why I am no longer impressed with what is posted on Huffingtonpost.com in general. Thank you for clarifying that you are not a reliable source of news or opinion.

This sort of thing appeals to HuffPo religion-haters. Offend any of their "sacred cows" (abortion, homosexuality, anti-military, global warming, etc.), however, they howl and curse and whine. It's just what they do, and no one should be suprised...like a dog that craps on your lawn.

I have to agree. Is this sort of bigoted pig-ignorant hateful nonsense the accepted new american pastime. Here in Canada we respect and allow people to believe and worship as they choose. Liberal or neocon, makes no nevermind; Scratch the yank, find the bigot.

As long as nobody goes quoting scripture. Then you're looking at 5 in the pen.
