If the children who have inhabited the White House are America's princes and princesses, Senator Barack Obama already got a head start in collecting royal blessings with Caroline Kennedy's endorsement earlier this year.

But soon after Ms. Kennedy made her very public endorsement at the end of January, one of her predecessors of Republican lineage made her own private one.

Yes, Julie Nixon Eisenhower is an Obama-can.

I think this is a sign that some Republicans are truly concerned over the way the party has been taken over by the neo-con movement. I believe that all of the Republican presidents of the last 57 years would be unwelcome and find it impossible to rise to positions of influence in the GOP as it is constituted today. The Republican party has become something to be ashamed of, something to be feared, and something that this country needs to rid itself of.

I say these things as someone who has voted for Republicans for President, Senator, Representative, Governor, and just about anything else you can think of. No more, not again. The days of honorable Republican leadership, on the national level, are gone, probably never to return in my lifetime.

I think she runs a support group for the offspring of her father's and other republican administration's operatives who want to leave the republican "family." She said that many are troubled by the direction the party has taken in recent years and are not comfortable. It makes sense. Can you imagine a Rockefeller at a republican parfty meeting praising Jeasus and talking Bill Kristol bs.

I have been waiting with 'bated breath to make my decision..Who, oh who would Richard Nixon and his offspring vote for? (WhoTF would vote for Obama because Julie Eisenhower or the ghost of Nixon supports him or vote for Clinton because Perez Hilton, or heaven forbid..the ghost of Goldwater supports her? PUH-LEEZE!!) Campaign reform should mandate NO celebrity, politico et al, etc. should be allowed to endorse before the convention or maybe even the GE, when we all get to campaign and endorse to our heart's delight and put our vote where our mouth is!

Or, we could just let the celebrities campaign as proxies..you know?..Oprah: "a vote for me is a vote for Obama", Elton: "a vote for me is a vote for Clinton", Hagee: "a vote for me is a vote for McCain". Maybe throw in a few WWE avatar videos/ American Idol comparisons..oh wait, never mind! How about we just move on to "Rollerball" ..we've already got the corporate angle covered, eh? Whattaya say..Last 2 standing play for their lives? Or, just throw them to the lions?..media has got that angle covered. Jeez, talk about bloodsports...

Kudos to Al Gore and John Edwards, whatever their motivation, for not jumping on anybody's bandwagon (or chariot)...yet!

I have always carried a soft spot in my heart for Julie Nixon Eisenhower. She carried the shame of her Father off with poise and dignity.

Almost makes you wish for the mythical good ol' days when the Republican Party actually stood for something like fiscal responsibility and hands-off government. Before it was co-opted by Reagan and then turned into an army of mindless orcs and trolls by Bush and his henchmen. At least you knew where they stood. It's no wonder that the ones who have some sanity left are crossing over to Obama.

Strangely enough even tho there's Watergate and Nixon's resignation, he was still the last moderately sane republican, Julie's support for the dem. candidate seems to confirm it, and what the republican (no the evangelneoconrethuglicans) have morphed into, her father would turn in his grave and be apalled.

Totally agree with your post. Many people forget that Nixon had a very strong populist streak
in him that allowed him to pass a lot of progressive legislation. such as the EPA.

So ironic that Ms. Eisenhower's picture is below Al Gore's. It seems she has demonstrated more politica courage in this election cycle than either Gore or Edwards.

Julie was always the sane one. The one smart enough to know a lying crook when she saw one. Now with Hillary and McCain she see a couple more. Tricia is the nightmare Nixon daughter, narcissistic, entitled, amoral, self absorbed--kind of like Bill Clinton only not as pretty.

These people have a better understanding of democratic values than Hillary Clinton.

Nixon had his flaws--big ones. But he spent the largest percentage of the fedearl budget on eduction of ANY president brfore or since. He was apparently pro-choice, favored signing anti-racism bills while governor when being a racist was OK, and he allegedly was indistinguishable from Kennedy in his Viet Nam policy. a quaker, he believed only in what he considered were wars of defensive, not agression. his secretary of Defense, MacNamara really prosecuted that ware and Nixon kept his eyes closed--so much so that the cockroaches who worked for him did a lot of damage. did he know about RNC covert activities? was he responsible for the tape erasure? John Dean, a friend of my dad's said he was. others say he was kept away from dirty tricks to enhanse plausible deniability.

that said, he did not like medicaid and medicare, hated liberal approaches to medicine in general, and had some weird thing against what he alleged were communists in congress.

my favorite thing about Nixon was that he had very few friends--he was not the salesy CEO personality we have gotten used to in the kast several administrations. he would not be most peoples 1st choice to have a beer with.

Although I am an Obama supporter , I have to add my piece on President Nixon. Nixon was the President who told the Iron workers union that they had to admit blacks or else if they continued to discriminate ,they could not work on Federal buildings . Also Nixon started affrimative action

Amazing how far to the right the GOP has shifted! Nixon used to be considered conservative but by today's standards would be a moderate and even a liberal on some issues. Thank you and others who have posted some of the positive specifics of Nixon's policies. It is really important to remember how far the current Republicans have moved the debate away from our core values as Americans, and it is important for Dems and progressives to push back.

In all reality, not a surprise. While Richard Nixon had his flaws, he was not part of the Revival Tent Republicans who dominate the GOP today. Bush and Company are pure snake handling social conservatives while Nixon, following in the Western states libertarian attitudes reflects the other dominant faction within the GOP. Julie Nixon Eisenhower, a Californian, represents the schism within the GOP that the social conservatives will not accept and will ultimately lead to its defeat. She is probably a fiscal conservative and a social moderate.

What is a little surprising is that she didn't back McCain. However, this endorsement shouldn't be taken as a switch to the Democratic Party. I couldn't believe in a million years that she would endorse Mrs Clinton. Clinton's brand of liberalism doesn't play well in any state west of the Mississippi with the possible exception of California. While Julie Nixon Eisenhower's endorsement might help in Pennsylvania, it probably will carry little weight outside of that region and certainly none in the Western battleground states.

True, but it took courage for her to endorse.
And courage has been sadly lacking in the Republican party
