WASHINGTON — Defense Secretary Robert Gates said he believes Iran is "hell bent" on acquiring nuclear weapons, but he warned in strong terms of the consequences of going to war over that.

"Another war in the Middle East is the last thing we need and, in fact, I believe it would be disastrous on a number of levels," he said in a speech he was delivering Monday evening at the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, N.Y.

A copy of his prepared remarks was provided in advance by the Pentagon.

He said he favors keeping the military option against Iran on the table, "given the destabilizing policies of the regime and the risks inherent in a future Iranian nuclear threat _ either directly or through proliferation."

Gates also said that if the war in Iraq is not finished on favorable terms the consequences could be dire.

"It is a hard sell to say we must sustain the fight in Iraq right now, and continue to absorb the high financial and human costs of this struggle, in order to avoid an even uglier fight or even greater danger to our country in the future," he said.

But he added that the U.S. experience with Afghanistan _ helping the Afghans oust Russian invaders in the 1980s only to abandon the country and see it become a haven for Osama bin Laden's terrorist network _ makes it clear to him that a similar approach in Iraq would have similar results.

Gates said the U.S. military was not organized and equipped for the kind of wars it finds itself in today.

"The current campaign has gone on longer, and has been more difficult, than anyone expected or prepared for at the start," he said. "And so we've had to scramble to position ourselves for success over the long haul, which I believe we are doing."

He called a drawdown of U.S. forces in Iraq "inevitable," with the debate mainly over timing.

"But the kind of enemy we face today _ violent jihadist networks _ will not allow us to remain at peace," he said. "What has been called the `long war' is likely to be many years of persistent, engaged combat all around the world in differing degrees of size and intensity. This generational challenge cannot be wished away or put on a timetable. There are no exit strategies."

Where is Cheney lately?
(Still stirring the cauldron?) Strange he's all but fallen off the map after his mid-east trip?

Is Gates' implication that the clusterf*ck in Iraq ISN'T a disaster? The US is like somebody who's in that blissful period while they're enjoying whatever massive luxury purchase they just put on their credit card, but the bill hasn't arrived yet.

The bill for Iraq is going to be a real doozy.

Sadr is being baited by Condi, the IA Forces are pounding Mahdi strongholds in Basra and Baghdad. The forgotten offensive in MOSUL is so successfull, it's, well, forgotten by the MSM.

The 'ceasefire' hailed by critics as being critical to reduced violence was actually an HAMAS or HEZBOLLAH tactic afterall. Allowing the IA with MNF support ,somewhat quietly, lull Mahdi Forces into complacency. Now their bases have been pinpointed for destruction. The offensive is a spectacular success SO FAR, before the upcoming provincial elections in October. BRILLIANT!

I find it hard to understand why support for Israel is a litmus test for the Presidency when we have Americans being arrested and charged for spying against America for the Jewish state of Israel.

Can someone enlighten me why this is so??

Why are Israeli supporters spying for Israel in America since America is Israel's only ally??

I am at sea on this!

I'm with you on this one. The thought of a leader coming out and saying he/she would nuke any country in this day and age is very scarey. How can the same people who mock McCain for his ""Bomb,Bomb" comments turn around and vote for Hillary after she says she will have no problem nuking them.

Hi,

"There are no exit strategies."

Senator Biden is correct when he says that President Bush and his administration have no plan for extricating our forces from Iraq.

IF they had listened to the active and retired senior military BEFORE the invasion of Iraq, there would be an exit strategy because all military operations are supposed to have one.

What is Senator McCain's exit strategy from Iraq?

Perhaps someone could ask him.

What do U think?

Many on the left do not fully appreciate the intellectual depth of President Pan and Republicans in general nor in particular to the imagined brilliance which is the misadventure in Iraq.

As was reported in the press, Pan read Camus.

The Republican "plan" for Iraq reflects a profound existentialist approach to life in two ways.

First, the invasion of Iraq is eerily similar to L'etranger with Pan as Mersault. Though in Irak not Algerie.

Second, the policy in Iraq is a living "Huis Clos" (Satre).

There is indeed "No Exit"

And when one is offered, it is refused by Garcin (McCrazy).

If Iran ever acquire nuclear weapons, it is certainly not for pre emptive strikes. Just like India, China and Pakistan they acquire these weapons out of fear, as a deterrent. Just like USA and USSR trying to out arm each other's nuclear arsenal during the cold war.
Iran feel insecure because of Israel and a hostile US. I strongly believe if Israel do not possess Nuclear bombs then the Middle East would not have come to this stage. If ever there is a nuclear war in the near future I strongly believe USA will be the aggressor because they are the most insecure nation in the world with a list of enemies(who else make up such a list besides Al Qaeda).

I am stunned at an honest admission that there are no exit strategies. The fact that this administration has no such strategy has been obvious, but no official has admitted that fact until now. Clearly, it is time for a change. Any exit strategy is better than no exit strategy. We gain nothing by remaining in Irag unless greater debt, more deaths, a depleted military, and more terrorists are considered gains.

PROFITEERING for Bush-Cheney BIG OIL PALS. That's what it is.
Bought and paid for my middle income Americans who are big losers in
the economic picture now and from now on.

They engineered a huge,
damnable change on who gets the fattest bottom line. And it's not you, people.

My personal opinion was that this was not the primary motive.

I think it was a confluence of delusional ideology and a conflation of our national security interests with those of another country and with a particular industry.

The way they pushed out Admiral Fallon, one wonders if Sec. Gates is the next head on the block. Nothing will stand in the way of Cheney/Bush's WW111 Iran bombing, absolutely nothing. Count on it. Can the draft be far behind? Of course the draft is needed, so that our young teen-age soldiers can fight in Cheney/Bush's war for oil. Do you think these two thugs care that 4,035 soldiers are dead, thousands injured, millions of Iraqi's dead, 4 to 5 million Iraqui citizens fleeing their homes.? These are two oil and gas "men" and Americans put them into office twice, for 8 long years. Two huge errors, Americans.

nancytheragingliberal: I agree with you, nothing is going to stop those sociopaths from war, I would only add that oil is not the primary motivation for attacking Iran, Israel is the motivating factor.

Truth is: Iran is running out of oil, it's estimated they'll run out in 15-20 years, and most of the oil they have is contractually promised to Russia & China. Iran is modernizing it's energy system by creating nuclear energy, something all modern nations have and Iranians are entitled to.

Israel & Zionists are the reason for attacking Iran.

draft doesn't work with the kind of military the U.S. currently maintains

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 10:34 PM on 04/22/2008

The army and marines have again lowered enlistment standards for new recruits to avoid a draft. They are now accepting people convicted of drug and sex crimes. The Bush administration has resorted to scraping the bottom of the barrel in it's recruiting efforts. A draft would draw too much attention to the war. I submit that no military can work with the dregs of society in it's ranks.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 09:25 PM on 04/22/2008

That kind of sensible logic is JUST what Bush/Cheney will use to engage Iran. Bush, Cheney and now Rice are begging Iran to attack us with their saber rattling. Gates cannot POSSIBLY have ANY respect for Shrub? Just like Reagan let Admiral Pointdexter take the fall for Iran Contra, you can bet Bush will blame one of his subordinates for his crimes against humanity. That's what cowards do.

Gates thinks that another Middle Eastern war would be "disastrous". Wow, that's profound. Ya' figure that out all on your own? Seeing how the current Middle Eastern war is a clusterf*ck of epic proportions, how would another one be anything but more of the same? No wonder we pay people like Gates so much; they know so much more than the common man. Thanks Gates; maybe you could explain your epiphany to the morons who helped get us into this mess (and to the Israel lobby, who get the final say on so much of what we do). As for the "long war", that is just coded language for the U.S. attempt to remain the top hegemon on the planet. The "long war" will end not when the Muslims defeat us, but when the Chinese and the Indians do so.

So Halliburton has run projections for the cost of the next disastrous war, and we can't afford it, again? Don't tell the pResident, until - how about January 21, 2009?

The only destabilizing factor in the Middle East is the United States of America. (You'll notice I'm not touching Israel.)

A harsh, and oversimplified comment, but damn near the truth.

Someone needs to tell Hillary. Yesterday she sounded ready to bomb Iran at a minute's notice. It's pretty clear who we do not want on the phone at 3am and it's a little scary when one of two Democratic nominees has a foreign policy position to the right of Bush's Secretary of Defense.

And can someone please tell Hillary to stop trying to channel Esther? She's done with South Philly suburbs and on to North Carolina. Anyone want to bet me that she starts wearing her Methodist cross again?

Diplomacy is the answer. We are not prepared to fight a war like the one that is raging in Iraq. Throw on top of that, people like Gates and Bush and Rice and Cheney are totally incompetent in this arena.
The best possible things that could happen would be for Rice to resign and we get someone in there who understands how to conduct diplomatic relations. Begin impeachment proceedings against both Bush and Cheney. The lies, deceit, misdirections, high crimes and arrogance are beyond redemption. They must be held accountable for their actions. Start bringing back our troops immediately and quit this stop loss crap.Bush and his neocon cabal have come within a hair's breadth of totally destroying our country. Look, if someone robbed your house and raped your spouse would you be in favor of letting them off the hook because they were moving on??? Come on, this mess has to be accounted for.
