Back in March of '07, black LA writer David Ehrenstein wrote a now-famous piece called "Obama the 'Magic Negro'." In it, he likened Obama to a favorite media "figure of postmodern folk culture..." that needs to be added to the canon of media caricatures immortalized in Donald Bogle's Toms, Coons, Mulattoes, Mammies & Bucks. This new figure provides "yeoman service to his white benefactors." It is a character seen as selflessly serving white people--with his life if necessary. Think Scatman Crothers in The Shining, who sacrifices his life to save the white hero. Think the semi-retarded "magical" creature in The Green Mile, who uses his healing Negro powers to save the lives of white people associated with his false imprisonment.

Ehrenstein's analysis was tainted when Rush Limbaugh stole it, sucked the brains out of it, and spewed it into his microphone like so much beer and bile-soaked fratboy swill. However, the analysis was sharp, and it holds up remarkably well at this later stage of the campaign.

In this media-soaked age, Obama's initial magic played particularly well with the young, the affluent, and even conservative-leaning whites. (Recall that blacks didn't climb wholeheartedly aboard the Obama bandwagon until Hillary Clinton was seen as racially belittling him.) The young are the children of media images, and the Negro savior--the all-forgiving, supernaturally inclined Morgan Freeman-like healing figure is as familiar to them as text messaging. Obama fit the role brilliantly. He promised to heal all societal rifts, all but end the separation between the races, and bridge the right/left divide--seemingly with a wave of his magic hand.

Well-educated, affluent whites comprised another initial Obama support base. In his piece, Ehrenstein highlights John Guare's play Six Degrees of Separation, based on the true story of a young, gay, black con man who gained access to New York's intellectual and financial elite by playing on their Magic Negro longings. He posed as the son of the iconic Sidney Poitier, the epitome of the Magic Negro stereotype. Guare saw this elite group as particularly susceptible to such imagery. Obama locked them up early.

Similarly, white racial conservatives like Jim Sleeper and Andrew Sullivan fawned over Obama's "transcendence" of race, basking in the glow of benevolence, healing and forgiveness (and forgetfulness) that could be read into his persona.

But now a change is coming, and Ehrenstein predicted it. "For as with all Magic Negroes," he wrote, "the less real he seems, the more desirable he becomes. If he were real, white American couldn't project all its fantasies of curative black benevolence on him."

David Brooks' recent New York Times column bore the title "How Obama Fell to Earth," and it reads like a primer on Ehrenstein's thesis. "But the fact is," Brooks wrote, "that voters want a president who basically shares their values and life experiences." The unspoken here is "white" before the word "voters." Why would he believe that a half-black man born of a Kenyan father and raised in Malaysia and Hawaii who went to Ivy League schools would share "values and life experiences" with the average white American man? Only the Magic Negro could do that.

Brooks admits as much when he writes: "When Obama began this ride, he seemed like a transcendent figure who could understand a wide variety of life experiences." Translation: "He seemed pretty white." Brooks tries to remove the racial tinge by saying that Obama now seems too much like "my old neighbors in Hyde Park in Chicago." Please. Obama never presented as anything other than an Ivy League intellectual. He has never seemed anything other than Hyde Park. However, the Magic Negro glamor allowed whites like Brooks to project upon Obama their Fantasy Black Man. To them, he was one who sympathized with white southerners who abandoned the Democrats during the civil rights movement. He was one who sympathized with whites who crossed the street when they see a black man walk toward them. He was Magic.

As the race rolls on, it becomes less and less possible to remain a fantasy. The flesh and blood tones start creeping into the comic-book Magic Negro sketch, and the more they do, the less folks like Brooks see in Obama. The press is turning on him (note the tone of the Philadelphia debate), and if, as seems likely, he wins the Democratic nomination, he will seem less the magical incarnation of white men's fantasies of what black men should be and more an individual black man with thoughts, opinions and associations of his own--the same kind of man that whites have traditionally found so threatening.

Even Obama's supporters buttress the Magic Negro thesis. In his Washington Post column called Obama Gets Schooled, Colbert King paints Obama as some sort of innocent Peter Pan figure, the light of whose crystalline purity is being doused by the evil forces of Clinton and the Republicans. King says that they're teaching Obama about the "dark side" of politics. If he didn't know about that side, he had no business running in the first place. If he doesn't know how to function within it, he will lose. If Colbert truly believes what he's saying, he should be chastising this naïf for climbing his 28-lb weakling ass into the political ring in the first place, not complaining that the bulked up opposition might have bloodied his nose.

Cleverly playing to the Magic Negro stereotype has gotten Obama this far. I'm assuming that he is smart enough and savvy enough about America's racial landscape to know exactly what he was doing. To win the presidency, however, he will have to show equal wit in subverting it.

OBAMA WAS A LIE FROM THE VERY BEGINNING. THE MEDIA SOLD HIM TO US. I CAN REMEMBER MSNBC, EVERY NIGHT FOR A YEAR, KNOCKING CLINTON AND MAKING OBAMA A HERO. INSTEAD OF THEM TRYING TO FIND OUT WHO OBAMA WAS, HE WAS A BLANK SLATE, THEY WERE BUILDING HIM UP AND KNOCKING CLINTON DOWN. NOW I CAN SAY THE CHICKENS CAME HOME TO ROOST. NOW WE ARE PROBABLY GOING TO BE STUCK WITH A MAN THAT CAN'T BE ELECTED. THE DEMOCRATS DO IT EVERY TIME. THERE SHOULD BE NO PROBLEM WINNING THIS PRESIDENTAL ELECTION AND WE ARE GOING TO LOSE.

This concept may apply to the old people but I don't believe it applies to the young.

They are like Stephen Colbert, they don't see color. But, I hope they do see an accomplished intellectual man who will lead them out of the darkness. I hope they see the individual and not just the color of his skin. How sad for those who would judge on such a superficial basis.

Isn't this one of the lessons of Christianity: Judge not lest ye be judged.

Obama is CORRUPT, a LIAR, and his slogan of change an ILLUSION.

1) CORRUPT: A houseowner wants to sell both a house and adjoining land. Obama can afford to buy only the house. No problem, the criminal Rezko to the rescue. Rezko pays full price for the land, whereas Obama gets a discount of $300,000 on the house. Nice to have criminal friends like this!!! (ref ABC News)

2) LIAR: Obama claims he did not know about Wright's America-hating (God damn America) and racist views till it was revealed in the mainstream media in March 2008. Obama attended Wright's church for 20 years, was married by Wright, had his children baptized by Wright, donated over $20,000 to Wright's church and named his book "Audacity of Hope" after one of Wright's sermons. You really believe after 20 years and all this he did not know?

3) ILLUSION: Exelon Corporation had not disclosed radioactive leaks at one of its nuclear plants in Illinois. Obama, a senator for Illinois introduces a bill to make disclosures mandatory. Seems like Exelon doesn't like it. Each draft of the new bill by Obama goes more and more towards Exelon till disclosures end up being "voluntary". What gives? How about $250,000+ donations by Exelon!!! Obama is not change, he is WASHINGTON BUSINESS AS USUAL. (ref NYT)

People need to realize that Hillary has been fighting for them all along. All the way back to 1993 when she tried to introduce universal health care.

"Hillary has been fighting for them all along."

Like the $1000 into $100,000 in the cattle futures market?

Backed NAFTA but now opposes. Voted for War a bunch of times, she now opposes it. She was on the board of Wal-mart.

She is a member of the Right Wing Prair Group called The Fellowship.

She lied about "Sniper Fire" 4 times then blames it on sleep deprevation.

Perhaps Obama has some skeletons in the closet but I think we can all agree that the Clintons, and there are two of them, have an entire warehouse.

Do I detect a frisson of bias in this comment?

This is typical of the Black mans experience in America.
We must do better than everyone else to get ahead.
Im not speaking of gangbangers, or crackheads, or whatever other stereotype that has been placed on us, but just regular black men.
The man has won already put the game out of reach, but not to the WHITE MAN. (not all of you)
This is how is was for us as black boys playing baseball. We were ALMOST always better than the white kid who played our position, but the coach would continue to play the white kid. We would be furious! But if we got too loud or checked the coach on it, we were considered "aggressive".
Thats why this pains me to watch the coverage. Anyone who thinks the media is pro obama is CRAZY!
Olberman, Maddow, Robinson, Roland Martin (CNN) Thats IT! Matthews didnt love Obama, he hated Hillary. But even he has fallen in line now.
I wont be surprised if they take it from him. Its just like growing up. . .

Pure nonsense... The whole idea or concept of a magic negro is bs. The idea that black man must fit this millitant mode aka Al sharpton, or else he's a "bargainer", "magic negro" or whatever you call it is small minded. Black folks are not homogenous in their experiences. I say this based on the fact that I grew up overseas and tend to take a more pragmatic approach to race relations.

The fact is because Obama is an unknown entity on the national scene, the average piece of dirt, which with most other politicians can be passed on is magnified. I would however say that as a black man, he's held to a different standard. He has to explain he's casual acquaitances like Mr Ayers. Sound bites from his pastor is used to label him and the question is being asked why he sat in the pulpit for 20 years listening to that garbage? No one has stopped to say that the so called garbage wasn't preached in his Church for 20 years. If that were the case, the UCC will have disbarred Trinity UCC from their denomination.

As for the honeymoon being over with the press, that's crap. Have you stopped to notice that all the hit pieces on OBama are primarily coming from ABC? They gave us the Rev Wright chopped and screwed video as they gave us the sham of a debate. George Stephanopolous is in the tank for the Clintons

The party is fracture because of the lack of leadership from the superdelegates, who should have end this race a long time ago.

Well said Mr. Gaiter.

I recall another blogger on this site being so incensed by Ehrenstein's opinion in the LA Times he wouldn't name Ehrenstein in print or provide a link to the article during his rant. Way back then I thought Ehrenstein was truth telling. I believe that Obama is/was willing to play the part of the "Magic Negro". I think he miscalculated and believed he would be able to play that part through the general election. His association with Wright and his ad lib (bitter remarks) in front of the San Francisco audience took him off script, making him too black and too "uppity" respectively.

Obama appears to be flustered by the change in the media's tone. I admit to taking great pleasure in the ABC debate in Philadelphia. He appeared stressed during his speech in Indiana. It must be a heavy burden to live a lie.

WHITE RACISTS are being heard in the MSM!

"Why can't he get the white, blue collar vote"?

Never mind he's received >14M votes, they must all be black or white latte liberals, right?

A nobody a year ago ready to get nomination by denying the CLINTON LEGACY OF THE PAST 16 YEARS is no small feat.

But, b/c he can't win racist, old PA, he's now hurtin' and just another Jesse Jackson.

This country deserves what it gets.

So great. The Democratic party is torn apart. The worst candidate will win only to continue bush policies and nothing will change in America.
See you in 4 years when were are still tied up in Iraq, Gas is 10 dollars a gallon. Our dollar is weak, there no peace in the world, America is full of racism, party civil war and gridlock, out of balance free trade and outsourcing, the rich have gotten richer, the poor have gotten poorer and we are in economical collapse.
It's going to be one hell of a lesson. 8 years wasn't enough I guess.
What happened to America? How shameful.

Very interesting article. I think your thesis is one way to explain the idolization fad that swept so many up in a thrall in the early stages of the primary. Since I am really angry about the last 7 years and really don't want to just put it all behind us -- I want prosecutions -- I was never enthusiastic about Sen. Obama's vision. And, since I don't think, per John Dean's most recent book, that you can compromise with the current group that calls themselves Republicans, I didn't think much of his proclamations about a new way to do politics. But mostly, I am just too damn old to not be cynical when someone tries to sell me something that doesn't ring true. And for me, I don't think it's possible to reach the pinnacle of American politics at such a young age with such a thin national resume and not be a politician through and through. I just don't think that happens. Yet, that is what they are trying to sell me.

You either get Obama or you don't. I get him loud and clear. I understood when he gave the Philly speech about race. He answered all I needed to know about Wright and Trinity. I understood his first explanation about the "bitter" comments. The answers are all there - you just have to listen rather keep asking the same questions as if he never addressed it. I understand his politics, his thought process, logic and his moral values. I understood the first time he explained why he doesn't wear a flag pin.
The answers are all there. You have just listen. (I intionally repeated this to make a point). I too would be frustrated if I had to keep saying the same thing over and over again.
If the answers aren't good enough - then you don't have vote for him, but for god sake, stop asking the same questions over and over. The horse is beaten to death.
People say -"who is Barack Obama"? If after 15 months, 22 debates, interviews and TV specials of hearing and seeing him and you don't know, then I'm afraid nothing will ever be satisfactory.
