How Dental Problems Affect You Head To Toe

When you look at the body as a holistic whole, the old '50s folk tune "The hip bone's connected to the thigh bone" makes critical sense. Researchers and medical providers are learning that that old song was true: problems at the bottom of the body (feet, legs) affect everything above, and seemingly innocuous dental problems seriously impact on everything below. One thing for sure...they are all connected. So much so that doctors and researchers are busy making those necessary and wholesome corrections to problems from head to toe.

Dr. Jay Neuhaus of Gramercy Dental Arts, uses neuromuscular dentistry to measure...and if needed, correct...imbalances in the balance and efficiency of the teeth in your mouth. His advanced practice uses a Tekscan tooth pressure medical device which precisely measures the pressures exerted by each individual tooth. This device is similar to the devices used at the Hospital for Special Surgery to measure foot dynamics when evaluating painful foot, ankle, knee, hip and back complaints for a prescription foot orthotic. Measuring individual tooth pressure seems rather radical, at first bite. But there is genuine concern among such medical professionals.

Why such a concern? "Well, just as a misalignment or imbalance in our feet cause ascending problems in our knees, hips, back, shoulders and neck, so can a poor (unbalanced) bite cause descending problems affecting our TMJ (such as pain, locking jaws) and our ears (tinnitus, loss of hearing)," says Dr. Neuhaus.

And it also affects how we look, and hence, how we feel about ourselves. Dr. Neuhaus also advises that "underlying muscular pathology" (bad bite, etc.) not only break down our natural teeth, but continue to attack the crowns, filings, veneers and on lays we implant to replace the destroyed teeth...what he calls "noxious forces." Noxious forces can be harmful, indeed. Such forces have reverberations which can genuinely damage your well being even if seemingly minor in nature.

Of major concern is the TMJ area, with the problematic areas of myofascial pain (pain in neck and jaw), internal derangement of the TMJ "joint," and inflammatory joint disease, arthritis and synovitis

TMJ pain and dysfunction can be devastating, and if the remedy is based on proper diagnosis (hence the devices Dr. Neuhaus uses), this malady can be corrected.

How we look...how we feel. Unless we examine proper and efficient bodily function as a whole, we can't fix what ails us or troubles us. So keep that '50s folk tune in mind. The body is indeed a whole.

..the draw back ( if you can call it that) with having work done at a dental school is that it takes FOREVER to have the work done..........in my case ....it took 6 or 7 visits to have ONE crown and three root canals ..........you have to have plenty of time........each visit can take upwards of 2 hours ....between each procedure the professor has to come over, check out whats been done then the next part is performed....and then the prof has to come inspect the next part and so on..........and sometimes there are as many as 10 people standing around looking in your mouth and as many as 2 or 3 hands in your mouth at once.........it is a little cheaper but you must be very patient.........VERY PATIENT.........

My dentists told me the same thing as the years went on. I remember when dentists were actually reasonable. I got a gold cap by a dentist that was beautifully done in 1978 and even today the dentists who look at me say it was great work, Cost 85 bucks. I got a root canal for 140. A cleaning for 35. My next root canal in 1989 was 800 Dollars. Things were fine until the late 80's when my teeth really started to go. Inflation or not, it got really ridiculous.

There are people that no matter how you keep things clean, the teeth still go. So it reached that point and I was told it would cost 22 THOUSAND DOLLARS to completely fix my teeth and as someone else stated, the dentist said it with a straight face and asked when I an appointment.

The nearest dental school to me is 180 miles from here and even they said the cost would be around 7 to 10 thousand dollars and they DON'T GIVE A DAMN ABOUT HOW BAD YOUR MOUTH IS, all they want is those Benjamins. That is all they are concerned about.

I tried to tell them I was in pain all the time, that my bite had completely collapsed and they just stared at me and one of them actually asked if I owned my home and I could take out A SECOND MORTGAGE TO PAY FOR IT!

&$*#^^% DENTISTS!

Don't get me started.

Speaking of braces, does anyone know how you can get help to pay for braces if you cannot afford them? and don't have insurance?

Check online for the nearest school of dentistry. Student doctors (Dental students) are supervised by licensed, board certified dentists, and the quality of care is comparable to what you would receive in a private practice. Plus, the prices are generally anywhere from 1/2 to 1/3 of what you pay in a private practice, and some schools have sliding scales for people with limited incomes and serious treatment needs, such as needing braces and no insurance.

Please don't take this the wrong way, but, you cannot afford NOT TO get braces. You (or your child) will wind up paying a lot more money in the future to correct problems which will only compound and become more severe the longer they are left untreated.

I hope this was of some value to you. Best of luck getting those braces.

We had a payment plan to the orthodontist for our youngest daughter. It took over two years to pay off. If a person lives close to the Mexican border there are some great American trained dentists in Mexico and its alot cheaper to have dental work or braces done there. Some of the dental clinics will also have a cab pick you up on the American side and take you straight to their office and bring you back.

And for those of us completely without dental insurance or the money to pay for even cleanings that are now priced at $200, another health service I will perforce learn to live without. I just don't get these people, dentists, who blithely stand there and say, as in my case, $14,000 for implants, and expect me to just book the appointment. What planet are these people living on?

The free market planet, sadly, and the one planed that does not believe in tithing with the gifts they could give to the glory of God or justto humanity in general. Nothing makes me more upset than those who give a weekend in one of those mass Dentistry to the Needy where much of what they end up doing is taking out teeth of children and adults who have had no opportunity for proper dental treatment. Dentist in my community donate far less time to needy than MD's. What would be wrong with each dentist in the country taking two or three needy clients a week in their practice and donating to charity...I would have no problem withj that being a tax write-off for the truly selfish ones. We have dentists coiming each year to the schools where they examine quickly the entire school (yes, many give one day) population and notes of need are sent home...often to parents who know there is a problem and no dental coverage to help pay for way too expensive treatments.

(Jeopardy style)

What are things my dental insurance will never cover, Alex?

MAN YOU MADE MY DAY WITH THAT ONE!!!

i always wonder why dental insurance doesnt cover much at all when it stems out toward everything else in the body...

thats just like braces and the person just loses all kinds of weight from a control of their eating habits... sounds cruel but very true...
