Former Radical Tom Hayden Details Clinton's 60s Past

In The Nation, hayden former 60s radical Tom Hayden -- in an essay called "Why Hillary Makes My Wife Scream" -- hammers Sen. Hillary Clinton, D-NY, for attacking Sen. Barack Obama, D-Illinois, for his association with former Weather Underground member William Ayers. "Hillary is blind to her own roots in the sixties," Hayden writes. "She was in Chicago for three nights during the 1968 street confrontations. She chaired the 1970 Yale law school meeting where students voted to join a national student strike again an 'unconscionable expansion of a war that should never have been waged.' She was involved in the New Haven defense of Bobby Seale during his murder trial in 1970, as the lead scheduler of student monitors. ... She wrote that abused children were citizens with the same rights as their parents.

"Most significantly in terms of her recent attacks on Barack, after Yale law school, Hillary went to work for the left-wing Bay Area law firm of Treuhaft, Walker and Burnstein, which specialized in Black Panthers and West Coast labor leaders prosecuted for being communists. Two of the firm's partners, according to Treuhaft, were communists and the two others 'tolerated communists'. Then she went on to Washington to help impeach Richard Nixon, whose career was built on smearing and destroying the careers of people through vague insinuations about their backgrounds and associates.

Yes, the relevant question is Where's the blowback? Hillary tries to smear Obama by pointing out that he served on a board with this radical named Ayres and then dares the mainstream media to look into her past (which nobody seems to want to do). Why is it fair for the media to spend days trying to link Obama to acquaintances like Ayres ...and then totally ignore Hillary's past associations? Tom Hayden is still around? No one noticed, but he fails trying to discredit Senator Clinton. His ex wife Jane Fonda was the activist who earned the name "Hanoi Jane". I ma always amused when I hear people who are forgotten trying to make a resurrection on the backs of the innocent. What anyone did in college has little to do with who they have become as human beings. If Haydens right, then do we hold Obama accountable for his bad judgement with drug use? No we do not. Tom Hayden is a loser and a Judas to the movement he was an integral part of, and now he finds it appropriate to sell out his fellow travelers. I don't think there is anything wrong with what Hillary did in the 60's-- hell, I was there myself--- and it has made her and I a better person. She's not going to bring the spirit of the Black Panthers and the Weather Underground to the White House, but she knows, as I know and many others, but not apparently Hayden, that we can use these lessons, these events of the past to make our country better. I suppose, according to Hayden who became a mainstream pol in California, she should admit she represented radicals (like Hayden who hid under the skirt of Jane Fonda for a while) and by not doing so she is somehow dishonest. Frankly I'm puzzled why Hayden is doing this. I think it would have been better for him to continue working for the principles he embraced in the 60's and try to trust that Hillary Clinton has also been imbued with values they both hold dear and continue to work for instead of distrusting her and presuming that she refuses to embrace her past. We can take our history, without admitting it in such a gross way as Hayden suggests, and use to grow and to enlighten our approach to the problems we are facing today.

It doesn't matter who Tom Hayden is, or was. What he's saying is important and valid. What you failed to note is that he's calling her out for being associated with radical left elements, too. She's being a hypocrite and lying by exclusion. You don't think this will be trotted out in a general election?

Given the way she has run this campaign, she's a far cry from the principles she embraced in the 60's. Her embrace of Fox as "far and balanced" says it all.

I was for Hillary for a long time, but her behavior just smacks too much of Rovian politics. We've had enough of this shit. Unfortunately, I've had enough of the Clintons. They should have left off where they were in the overall realm of things. Now their image is tainted.

What actions? Working with a former CP member and helping with defense matters in a trial is not only NOT illegal, but quite commendable. It is a LOT different that BOMBING and killing people as the Weathermen did. Too bad you parrot the Republicans line. it is especially bad when Ayers thinks that what he did was GOOD. I guess you must think it was good too. She was not "involved" in the FALN by the way which is a lIe. You also cannot understand the difference between a pardon and commutation. Bill did NOT grant a pardon to them. I too think that they spent enough time in prison for their crimes.

The Drama of the Gifted Child presents an example of this syndrome. Hillary needs to please male figures even if it is Dick Cheney. Lacking the love and affection of an emotionally-detached father has damaged the woman. She derives her power from figures like Sam Walton of Wal-Mart or other military figures, rich or powerful figures.

Rev. Wright did a great job explaining the stupid snipets that the mass media decided to let loose on us. This man is intelligent and explained his positions thoroughly. He served in the military and was also at the president's side when he was hospitilized. This is not a man that hates America.
I looked up Ambassador Peck who he mentions in the interview. Everyone should google him. Peck was the one that said the"chickens have come home to roost." This was a white man saying this, these were not Rev. Wright's words. Besides, everything he said makes sense. We did bomb places and did not care who we killed. We stole land from the Indians because we wanted it. If I had a church like that, I would actually attend. It would be interesting to listen to. After watching the interview or even listening to the entire sermon you would have to be a complete moron not to understand what he was saying.
