Much has been made of whether or not Barack Obama can close the deal against Hilary Clinton, and that his failure to do so raises questions about his viability in the fall assuming he receives the nomination.

Such concerns, though legitimate, miss the more salient point -- there is no other alternative for Democrats if they wish to reclaim the White House.

Another way to put it, whatever concerns exist surrounding Obama's viability pale in comparison to those of Clinton; she cannot win. I say this not as an Obama supporter or Clinton detractor but as a political observer. Obama is the Democrats only hope to end eight years of Oval Office exile.

The Clinton campaign has been very effective at driving up Obama's negatives. There is no doubting that he has lost some of his swagger that initially indicated he was above the traditional politics as usual fray.

But Clinton has not gone unscathed. She has, according to the latest ABC/Washington Post poll, driven up her negatives 14 points since January where they now stand at a staggering 54 percent.

While the Obama campaign has decried the Clinton's "kitchen sink strategy" as negative campaigning, has anything been done that will not be replicated in the fall?

I'm still not clear as to what constitutes negative campaigning; its political definition is at best an ever-changing, subjective slippery slope.

With the possible exception of George Washington's inaugural election, when has America not had a presidential campaign that failed to rely in part on the deficiencies of one's opponent? The internal differences within the Federalist Party along with the external negative campaigning led by Thomas Jefferson insured that John Adams would be the last Federalist to be commander-in-chief.

I can hear Obama supporters asking: What about Jeremiah Wright? What about "bittergate"?

These examples say more about "We the People" and our appetite for negativity--an appetite that has existed since 1797, if not before. Has it not been proven repeatedly that negative campaigning, however defined, is successful?

A portion of the electorate has always been more motivated by the negativity of the "other" candidate, perceived or otherwise, than their candidate of choice. But negative campaigning does not sway the masses; it usually has a much narrower focus.

As the Apostle Paul once wrote, this is "sounding brass and tinkling symbol" because Clinton cannot win.

It has been reported ad infinitum that Clinton must garner 67 percent in the remaining primaries to overtake Obama in the popular vote -- a feat that she has only achieved once thus far. Most agree that she cannot overtake him in pledge delegates.

In this context, to receive the nomination by way of superdelegates is to risk the Democratic Party becoming the 21st century version of the Federalist.

I just don't see how the majority Obama supporters would accept an outcome decided by superdelegates, especially if they lead in popular vote and pledge delegates. Moreover, I do see a large number of African Americans permanently leaving the party en masse should this occur.

There is no scenario that a Democratic candidate with a negative rating of 54 percent, losing a large portion of the African American vote can win. I doubt that a candidate in that context can win as many states as George Mc Govern in 1972, who won only Massachusetts and the District of Columbia.

Am I saying anything that super delegates are not already aware? No! Nor does this suggest that Clinton should drop out. Clinton staying in the race is the price that Obama must pay for his failure to officially close the deal.

But everyone is looking at the same numbers; and the numbers say it's Obama's nomination. The only way it can change would be inside party politics.

Whatever concerns party leaders have about Obama not being able to close the deal is moot, he is their dog in the race. To change now would not only be to lose in November, it could also mean the demise of the country's oldest political party.

Wonderful post. It will not only be black people leaving the party, but this 67 year old, long time democrat will also leave the party if the Clinton's manage to steal the nomination. They are everything this country does not need for the next 8 years, I hope the party remembers what it was like in the 90's with them in office. God help us, not again!!!!!!!

There is very little difference in moral character between George W. Bush and Hillary Clinton.

The Democrats do not need an "Answer", they need a candidate for the presidency in the Fall.

Too Many people are coming here to express too much hate. Enough already! Obama people please stop kicking Hillary in the shines. Hillary people, please stop and consider what we Democrats are about, and what we are up against in the fall. One of the headlines today read "Democrats Can"t Go to Denver Divided." Well, the thing is Democrats always go to the convention divided. It is our strength; it is our weakness, it is who we are. We are not a monolithic party, we are a party of all peoples, all faiths, all backgrounds, all Americans with a vision that we must do better. In the fall we will come together. Don"t worry about "Reagan Democrats." There is no such thing. These people are Rockefeller Republicans with no other home. Their party turned their back on everyone but the privileged few forty years ago. Nixon learned he could win if he scared these people enough such that they would hold their noses at the polls and vote for "Peace with Honor." This is the same load of bull that McCain will trot out in the fall. There is no honor in the Iraqi conflict; no honor comes from empire building, only ruin. Hillary is not the problem. She is a product of the old ways, the old and tired view of a world that was never ours to pillage in the first place. The time has come, again, to remember who we are. Yes We Can!

There are some Reagan Democrats! And many more Reagan Republicans! But this is not a bad thing. Some might even vote for your guy (if you play nice!)
But to your sentiment generally -- a hearty Amen!
Time to be Americans.

Really, I question why we are calling these people "Reagan Democrats." This is a new day, a quarter-century later! There are different concerns, different histories, different experiences, and different options. I understand that it's good to look at history for guidance, but I question the effectiveness--or advisability--of basing a 2008 campaign strategy on a cultural phenomenon that happened in the 1980s.

"Yes we can" is a slogan made up by Axlerod. Democrats are as dumb as Republicans who by into re-packaged advertising logos and one liners. Slogans mean nothing, only votes count. When a Senator talks anti war and then votes billions to continue it the first chance he gets, he is merely a slogan.

Hillary ---"mis-states"

Bill --- as commander-in-chief "never had sex with that woman", (of course)

McCain--has a straightforward bad temper-
knows nothing about the economy-
seeks a third "Bush" term
has too many "senior moments"

Obama--somewhat new, somewhat unknown,
brilliant guy, good family man, smart wife--
seems to be a uniter--not a divider--
can radically improve the world image of America

Who is best choice for the White House??

Your analysis betrays your attachment to Obama.
Neither candidate can win on the first ballot without the superdelegates putting them over the top.
The supers must decide who deserves it based on one of three criteria, the pledged delegate count, the popular vote, or who is most 'electable' (ie, momentum, or swing states, etc).
At that point, the "rules" about which votes should be counted are just opinions. If Florida is counted, she will likely be ahead in the popular vote when all is done.
If you say those voters should not have a voice, you can spin the pop vote that way, as well.
You say that because the Obama voters would be the majority, it would not be possible to deny them the nomination. This is your interpretation meant to justify your candidate. Hillary has a better shot at winning the Presidency.
Your arguments smack of desperation.

Where did you learn your math from ? Sure wasn't from this century or state! Florida counted still won't put her in the lead! than if Mi counts Obama gets the Non committed, and it still gives him the lead. After North Carolina, that will be the end of the story! As you know uncommitted in Mi was over 47%. I think Obama has had good restraint here with her and her breaking her contract in attempting to seat Fl and Mi! it's time this stops being the talking points! Even those in the Media who support Hillary has finally done the math right and concieding she can't get the popular vote!I often wonder why people keep asking why Obama can't close the deal? shouldn't it be "Why can't hillary close the Deal?" wasn't it her who said they'd win by Feb and wrap this up, and why her campagne is in financial trouble? Because she thought they'd throw him under the bus, and just couldn't get it done! So the quesstion should be hers to answer! Hillary, "Why can'lt you close the deal" on this election------you said you'd have it done already! why isn'lt it done?

I see that someone has been listening to the Clintons and has succumbed to the allure of their fuzzy math. Sorry to interrupt your delusion, but how do those Clinton calculations account for the popular vote in caucus states? And setting aside the whole question of whether any votes cast in the invalid January primaries in Michigan and Florida should be added, as is, to anyone's popular vote, setting aside the potential votes that were not cast because those primaries were invalid, to whose popular total have the Clintons assigned the 40% of Michigan votes cast for "uncommitted" because Clinton was the only major candidate left on the Democratic ballot?

Senator Clinton has been making a lot of noise about how Michigan's votes should be counted, so what has she done with (at least) 40% of them?

The GOP will slaughter Clinton. Obama has been very careful not to destroy Clinton"s reputation as he needs her to help unify the party. There were many occasions he could capitalized on things she said and done through the campaign as recent as her blunder about the middle-east during the PA debate which would rip apart her experience claim to shreds making her look like she has no idea what she is talking about.

That said, just because he hasn't, it doesn't mean the GOP won't. They have 35 years of baggage to ready to unload.

Most primary voters aren't aware of the magnitude of things on Clinton. If her voters knew, they would know what kind of politician she really is.

Look at what happened in Ohio " she lied through her teeth about NFTA, blasted Obama about Canada while it was her campaign was stroking them and then we learn Penn was talking with Columbia. Sure she disagrees with Bill...

I say this not as an Obama supporter or Clinton detractor but as a political observer. Obama is the Democrats only hope to end eight years of Oval Office exile. " Speaking as someone who has supported President Bush, I couldn't agree more.
And I would add to this observation that if Obama wishes to get votes from moderates, independents and Republicans, he needs to begin to distance himself from the left-wing of his party and speak to middle America -- to common-sense loving, fair-minded Americans who want to see this country succeed, who believe in the American dream, who love freedom.
The blame-America-first crowd is the lead weight that sinks the Dems. Obama's first obstacle will be a tough one: distancing himself from his own wife's ill-advised remarks. Americans will be forgiving of a man standing up in defense of his wife, but will want to know that Mrs. Obama was not speaking for candidate Obama.
Americans who are already dead against Obama will keep hammering about Rev. Wright. But there are plenty of reasonable and serious Americans who will give Obama a fair shake. And after that, let the best man win.
It's time for the Dems to be "for" something. Being always "against" is just tiresome, rudderless whining.

The other night at the White House correspondent's banquet, Ferguson asked the crowd for an indication of who should win the presidency, Republicans or Democrats. The shouts and applause from the Republicans in attendance were equal if not louder than those from Democrats. As Ferguson said, and no one reported, that should put the lie to the idea of liberal leaning media.

The managing editors of MSM are Republicans who dye us in their wool. They are the ones who need to be for something, because they concentrate on being against trivial, emotionally laden nonissues to ensure preferential tax treatment for their class. Talk about being tiresome, rudderless and whining! Rudderless is insisting on endless tax cuts while we're at war. Tiresome is floating canards. Whining is saying the media is left leaning when it's the very opposite, from Fox on up.

We need to blame America for its sins. America is not incapable of error. Only by exposing our errors can we hope to overcome them. Journalism used to do that.

We need to blame America first when it deserves to be blamed rather than looking to others to blame. The Arab countries are great at blaming us for all their own internal problems, and we condemn them for it. Why can't conservatives see that it's their duty to blame America when America is causing so many of it's own problems?

Easy. There's a buck in it, and bigger bucks for conservatives than the rest of the country.

The idea that Republicans are rich is a stereotype. I'm sure not rich. I agree with half of what you've written. Conservatives do in fact "blame America" -- for moral laxness, for instance. Certainly our cultural artifacts in the forms of cinema and rock music with the scantily clad female does not play well in straight-laced Arab countries. Our sense of individual freedom doesn't play too well with their clerics, either -- though it is appealing to their publics. Some of what we export in the realm of ideas is very threatening to other cultures and would seem to them to undermine everything they believe.
Do we give up freedom of speech for their benefit? Even when our speech is immoral?
You tell me.
A buck in it explains Hollywood as much as it does oil dollars. And last time I looked, Hollywood was Dem city.
Still, I think you and I agree about more than we disagree. I'm guessing we'd both like to see both parties take the high road for a change and roll up their sleeves and start looking for solutions instead of indulging the endless game of assigning blame.

Why can't MRS Clinton close the deal? Because the smartest woman in the world is barely educable. she began this contest as the anointed and through a string of the stupidest strategies ever seen in a political campaign is now trailing a tyro. She is so dumb (how dumb is she?) that she doesn't realize that when the press is present they record the event and actually keep a record of what is going on, DUH. Why did she stay with Bill is all we heard after the Lewinsky incident? Now it is evident why, without Bill MS Rodham would be working as a process server, waitress, or gutting fish in Alaska; these are the jobs her experience warrants. She is a loser, a tenacious one, but a loser nevertheless.

Mr Williams doesnt understand the problem that "bittergate" and "Wrightgate" illustrates.
Both episodes demonstrate how much Obama is out of touch with large segments of society.
Obama has little empathy for urban, suburban or rural struggles and issues.
Lip service without empathy is not what we need.

Also "ask not , what your country can do for you; but what you can do for your country. "(JFK) All we hear from Obama is let's skidaddle. Now he want even stand up to a woman and debate face to face. Excellent assessment. However, I'm afraid that the Clinton campaign totally discounts the possibility of African Americans defecting from the Democratic Party if she takes the nomination from Obama. I was listening to a caller on a progressive talk radio show talking about this very thing. The host was trying to explain to the caller that it would be terrible and we would be worse off if McCain wins. The caller (who was African American) basically said that things are already bad for African Americans and they can't get much worse, so what's four more years? The moment the words came out of his mouth, I had a cold chill up my spine and I realized what a truthful and powerful statement this was. I truly believe that the Clinton"s believe that the African American and the rest of the Democratic Party will fall in line, but hearing this caller I suddenly had an idea of how horrible the election will be in the fall.

You might stop and remember that there are many Black folk alive who have profound memories and awareness of the racist mobs, attack dogs and fire hoses being sprayed full force at rights demonstrators. The National Guard patrolling Black communities in the sixties after insurrections.
The deprivations of "separate but equal" remain extant in a myriad of ways. Bill Clinton wreaked damage on Black people that makes me despair at the "love" he seemed to get from Black people, that even some continue to refer to him as the "first Black president", though many who use that term likely don't have clue what Toni Morrison was talking about. I wonder if even she had a clue.

At any rate, all of that to suggest that the question of McKook would be kind of moot in that way. However bad he could wind up, we have seen worse, and we have coped with it.

It's not incumbent upon you, or the MSM or the pundits to prove to us Barack Obama is the Democrats only viable candidate. It's Barack Obama, and his campaign's job.

Lately they've employed a rest on your laurels, hope they get sick of Hillary's ridiculous tactics strategy, but did so at the wrong time. Pennsylvania was a godsend to her campaign, a state rife with blue collar white workers, just itching to have their say and teach the left coast liberals sending their "elitist" charlatans into the heart of PA to try and bowl, and pass himself off as a regular guy a lesson they wouldn't soon forget.

Sure some were racist, and sure some actually were stupid enough to buy the preposterous elitist argument, and sure some actually bought Hillary drinking her Crown Royal as a sign she was just like them ( 109 million...are you fucking idiots? ),whatever reason it changed the momentum of both campaigns.

Add to that his dismal debate performance, and telling tales out of school to San Fran elite. Tell it to their faces Barack, Mr. Honesty.

It's his job to tell us who he is, not yours.

Obama has talked about his life through this whole campaign. He even wrote two books about himself. He has been telling us, but some are just not listening to him but to others who say he's a muslim, doesn't wear a flag pin (when the fingerpointers don't themselves), is a closet terrorist who wants to damn America.

The ignorant will cling to these falsehoods. Obama knows this. He has the strength to trudge on for change, and the wisdom not to waste his time trying to change what can't be changed.

It is clear that if the Super Delegates cheat him out of the nomination, he will still be a happy man.
It is Hillary who is needy for the Presidency for her own happiness. What a sad and pathetic human being she is

She should have hit that state with a home run of at least 69% like obama took a all white state of Nebraska with over 60% and she couldn't even do that! She started with a 29% lead over him in PA and this unknown guy goes in there and in six lousy weeks he lowers her lead to 9%! PA was no win, it was a mircle for Obama for pete sake! She split texas with him on the line of error , and he got more delegates there. It was like a 3% win, line of error in mexico. She only one one state large! He's put away a straight 12 state win against her! the popular vote is his, he's winning in delegates, and he's sstolen 70 of her supporters and donors! Hillary should have put away one state after another against this virtualy unknown Black Senator! But, just look what happened! You sit there and tell me this man is not unitying this country like no other sense JFK! Nations around the globe has started talking about his intelligence and sense of fair play! "While the Obama campaign has decried the Clinton's "kitchen sink strategy" as negative campaigning, has anything been done that will not be replicated in the fall?"

What you're missing here is that Obama is being attacked by a fellow democrat. McCain couldn't pull this stuff. And even if he did, the whole Dem party would be all over him. Now that Hillary did all she could to weaken a fellow democrat, McCain can simply repeat and say Hillary said it. This is totally reprehensible, and a primary reason that the Clintons should be retired.

I try to take a longterm view of the state of the Democratic Party. Let's say the Superdelegates are dismissive of Hillary's contention she is the most electable in the General Election. Speaker Pelosi, Chairman Dean, and Majority Whip Clyburn step up and proudly announce the Superdelegates have committed to vote for Obama, the party will be unified and Hillary and her supporters should stand down because there will not be a Dream Ticket.

Hillary's supporters won't be half of the Democrats, but close. And here comes the Republican's 527 reminding dejected, rejected and disappointed Democrats they can vote for whomever they want in the General. McCain has indicated he is four and out. Hillary will have another shot at the Presidency if McCain wins.

Also, the 527 will remind disappointed Democrats McCain crossed aisle to pass the McCain-Feingold Bill, Gang of 14 to get Federal Judges appointed and worked on immigration reform with Sen. Kennedy. Why not give Hillary another shot in four years? Obama is only 46. He's got another 20 years try for the Presidency again. If Democrats take a long term view, then Hillary is best choice in the immediate term.

If Clinton is given the nomination by the superdelegates, the blacks will walk out on the party. Some will go to the Republicans and some will just stay home, but they won't vote for Clinton because her "win" is really the superdelegates telling the blacks to go back to the back of the bus. Also, the educated people like my husband, my mother, and myself are not sure that we will vote for Clinton either if she is given the nomination after her party destroying tactics.

We need Obama now. We can't live through a Clinton administration where she views the constitution in the same way Bush does and believes that America can still be arrogant in foreign policy.

This election is about whether my generation and the generation after it will take control of the party and lead us. Clinton's generation (and the one before it) is the one that help us to get into the horrible mess we are in today. We now have to clean up the mess made by the older generations and we can't wait eight years to do that !!! We need to start cleaning up this mess now and we need the new generation to take the reigns now!!!!

Clinton should accept this,be a good party member and go away!
