This morning on MSNBC, Mika Brzezinski of Morning Joe made one of the first good points the media has made in covering Chicago pastor Reverend Jeremiah Wright: that Wright's comments, when put into soundbytes, "put out political implications" for Senator Barack Obama. That, "if you hear the whole speech, and not just the soundbytes, there is a legitimate message." I guess MSNBC felt like they was poised on the dangerous precipice of being thoughtful, or thorough, or maybe even responsible, though, because they then broke up Wright's speech in Detroit into the most controversial soundbytes they could, then stood back wondering where all the political implications came from.

The snippets of Wright's speech were relatively tame stuff: basically making fun of the dialectic quirks of Presidents Kennedy and Johnson and pointing out that no one ever corrected their speech, as they do black children. It's highly reminiscent of a comedy routine, frankly. But when Jeff Foxworthy talks about the weird way people pronounce things, people give him millions and millions of dollars. If you're Wright - a black preacher who yells and who committed the crime of saying three or four controversial things in sixty-seven years, you need to be admonished by Chris Matthews and any presidential candidates you've talked to (the black ones anyway!) need to be branded as traitors.

[WATCH.]

BRZEZINSKI: All right, that is Barack Obama's former pastor speaking in Detroit last night. He's going to be speaking again in Washington in just about 22 minutes. Chris Matthews joins us on the phone. And Chris we have been getting a lot of emails as we have been playing the soundbytes from the Reverend Wright in Detroit last night saying that if you hear the whole speech and not just the soundbytes there is a legitimate message about the racial divide that exists in our country. Having said that, what are the political implications for Barack Obama, given the fact that this Reverend is coming out strong and speaking out throughout this entire weekend?

MATTHEWS: Well, the first question you have to ask is why doesn't he go away? I mean, no one has asked him to go and speak with the country. The only the person he is helping is probably Hillary Clinton and ultimately John McCain because he is dividing people. The fact that we are arguing about Ebonics again and differences in pronunciation of American English between different groups is just trouble. And it's not the unifying harmonious message of Barack Obama.

This is a fine example of just how idiotically insincere the political press can be. Matthews bemoans the fact that "we are arguing" about Wright "again," as if someone placed a gun to his temple and forced him to have a conversation about it. I know, Chris! How could this have happened? It is almost as if your producer edited down a speech into controversial parts, prepped a video of the same, introduced it on the air, specifically prompted viewers to pay attention to the controversial soundbytes, and then broadcast them! (And how can we be having an argument over "Ebonics" again? I don't remember the first time!)

Need I even note the irony of Chris Matthews here? Because when you break Matthews "into soundbytes," such as, "[T]he reason she's a U.S. senator, the reason she's a candidate for president, the reason she may be a front-runner is her husband messed around," you might conclude that he is a misogynist dolt. Nobody asks Chris Matthews, "Why don't you go away?" Except that, ooops, they totally do.

I used to watch MSNBC throughout the day, no more. I might as watch the E channel, at least their trivial gossip is harmless. The goal of MSNBC is to take this to the convention. They don't cover the news, they program it , it is all about ratings. Really sad.

Chris Mathews and MSNBC needs to issue an apology for that Jekyll and Hyde comment. This is how rumors, character assasination get started...and some people will actually believe it (like the Muslim rumor). It was wrong, untrue and unfair. The MSM claims Barack needs to 'distance' himself from Wright....he's done that....but it's obvious that even if Senator Obama went to the moon, the MSM would still say it's not enough. So, screw the MSM. Obama, continue doing what you are doing..."Rev. Wright doesn't speak for me or my campaign...he has every right to make statements on his own behalf..."

Except for Keith Olbermann, I have almost gotten to the point where I put MSNBC in the same category as FOX News. As an African American I started watching it thinking they would be fair in their reporting but boy ever since the PA primary, and now Rev Wright's recent appearances, that station has just about become unbearable. Sure Keith and Rachel appear to be Obama supporters but they are not anywhere near as bashing as Joe, David, Chris and today I saw Norah O'donnell, Andrea Mitchell, Contessa Brewer go down that same road and harp on all the negative points of view. And that Jonathan Capehart makes me want to put tape over his mouth he is so anti-Obama. After all the Obama bashing by the rest of these folks, it's refreshing to hear Keith and Rachel look at the more positive side of what's happening for Obama. Keith's show is the number one rated of all of them so he must be doing something right!!!

I know I speak for many others when I say that Chris Matthews gets on my last nerve! What a hypocrite! I doubt that the highly moral Matthews has gotten up out of the pew of his Catholic parish to denounce the pedophilia cancer that has infected the Catholic church for decades. Barack Obama and Jeremiah Wright are not one and the same, Matthews. Just as you and other Catholics should not be identified as the same pedophile priest that molested the daughters and sons from your church.

Look its not just MSNBC. I'm sitting here right now with Fox and CNN and CNN International up on three different TV screens. All I see is Wright. Wright may not be the wild eyed loon that people took him for from the 20 second soundbytes. The fact that Cable TV put his speech in Detroit up and substantial portions of his National Press Club remarks on probably helped his image among some people. But the bottom line is that he is a distraction for the Obama Campaign. Every minute that Wright is on the screen is one less minute that Obama is on the screen and thats simply not good for Obama. Really don't know what Wright was thinking.

Let's not be duped, folks, this attack
is a tour de force to make sure the democrats don't win the election. They are going in for the kill. There is nothing they won't stoop down to---they have no shame. Obama withstood all the other " hair on fire" rages so they turn up the heat. There is one thing that they misread and that is the new found power of our party. They were shocked but they will keep on. Stand up. We will keep on. There's no more time left.

"And it's not the unifying harmonious message of Barack Obama."

Here Matthews is right. He must have been unable to visually tell Jeremiah Wright from Barack Obama. Must be the skin color or something.

Look this Wright businss speaks to serious character identifiation for Obama.
But why isn't this on the Huff front page? This Huff article questns whether MSNBC is plying the wrong Wright soundbite.
How does Huff stand there and not give this the same (hysterical) coverage and debate that Bill and Hillary have received?

LOL... yeah, poor bill and hill, they can't do anything right with the MSM in their pocket pretending she has a snowballs chance in hell of getting this nomination! Sorry you can't tell black people apart, though. Scientists have studied this phenomonon! Well, for the record, Obama is the one running for president and Rev Wright isn't! End of character identification from what I can see!

Mika Brzezinski lost all remaining respect I had for her this morning...She was going on like Sean Hannity for HOURS...I realize that she probably thinks she has to be "fair & balanced" because her father works for Obama, but she really overcompensates. Rather than talk about the actual CONTENT of Wright's speeches (which were pretty amazing), all she could focus on is what a disaster this was for Obama just because the man (Wright) opened his mouth. Her coverage was absolutely pathetic. We can't even get relief when Joe Scarborough isn't there!!

I felt the same way! It seems the show got messages from their viewers telling them they were way off base, but she and Chris seemed to latch onto that one angle. Unfortunately they didn't make that clear to the viewers, that this was purely political and not historical. I liked what Wright had to say. I didn't agree with some of it, because I felt his views were dated in some instances... but I genuinely liked listening to him and his placing all of this into context with the African American experience. I do get tired of being spoon fed the MSM illusion of our so called sitcom life.

I turned the show off 5 minutes after I turned it on this morning and sent an e-mail to them telling Mika what I thought of their racist rants against Wright andf Obama. It's clear they have found the story they want to stick with for the rest of the campaign and Obama has a snowball's chance in hell of getting to the White House. As far as I'm concerned Wright wore the uniform of this country when he searved in the Marines and that gives him the right to say whatever he wants to and that includes God Damn America.

That's right!! As a former Marine...he risked his LIFE for our flag and freedoms...he has the right to exercise that freedom of speech all he wants.

I also liked and agreed with some of his comments.

While I don't dislike Chris Matthews as much as others seem to, I do find his coverage this season troubling.

I found myself especially questioning his coverage of PA, since he has such close political ties there and is now openly flirting with the idea of running for Senate. This has to cause a conflict of interest in his coverage, since the PA political infrastructure that is courting him also backs Hillary.

I don't think you can be objective covering the people who are working to further your career.

It never ceases to amaze me how low the media can go. Here is Wolf Blitzer talking about how Obama is "struggling" to get white voters just after he spoke about how divisive "Senator Obama's pastor" is. I knew! I just knew that today the MSM would have diced and spliced the Rev's speech to create controversy where none existed before. Last night the Fox reporter described the speech as remarkable as did the 2 CNN reporters. This morning Fox was saying that the Rev was mocking the Kennedys and mocking white people from down south. BTW, who was the main speaker for the Detroit NAACP even last year? Don't know? Who asked the media to follow the Rev and report on everything he says. I know I didn't ask them to. This is the same media that failed to ask a single relevant question of the Bush administration during to the lead up to the war. I DETEST and DESPISE the media!

Wolf Blitzer is a liar. And he along with the "political commentators" stoke the flames of racial hatred.
But, its okay. Americans will believe what they want to believe.
The media wants this race to continue to Denver, but it won't happen.
And Hillary still won't be the nominee.
We have a President that has lower approval ratings than Congress, and any of the candidates, we have issues we want the MSM to talk about. Yet they continue to go for ratings.
I have been turned off by the pundits, and will continue to get my real news from the blogs and articles by the people that really know what is going on.

Remember, the MSM are just a bunch of corporations that are in this thing for self preservation.

ABC convinced me of that.

Air America is good but Stephanie Miller(she is not technically part of Air America I know) tends to go off sometimes into a silly cartoon show when what people want to hear are the issues that count to them. Today they talked about bull or elephant iron balls. I had to shut it off. Ridiculous.
But Rachel Maddow, and Schultz are very very good.

That is one of the biggest problems with the 24 news channels. They have fill air time and all issues become a game of telephone.

Another example was when the "bitter" comment first broke. All the talking heads dismissed it and said it was absurd to think Obama meant anything disparaging. But, after hours of splicing and dicing and a toss in the spin cycle.

BAM!! Bittergate.

The problem lies with the viewing public. They have such an incredibly short attention span. No one wants to sit through an entire speech. So the MSM has to get the highlights and run with those. Problem is the "highlights" are meant to get ratings, not inform the public.

This why I stopped watching MSNBC, Chris Matthews and Joe ScA$$borough more than three weeks ago. Suddenly Chris is kissing up to the Clintons, Joe "I killed my intern" ScA$$borough openly and daily professes his deep love for Hillary Huckabee, and Tim Russert is just unbearable to watch as he tries to mask that he's pro-Clinton.
The only fair people on all of MSNBC are Keith Olbermann and Rachel Maddow. Here's a thought: get rid of Joe ScA$$borough and give Rachel his seat!

You really didn't need to add the Obama 08 at the end of your comment - it goes without saying. The only fair people on MSNBC are Olbermann and Maddow?? They are so far in the Obama camp they shoud be wearing Obama stickers on their foreheads. And I see very little pro-Clinton rantings from ANYONE on MSNBC. Just the opposite. I have actually taken to watchin both
MSNBC and Fox - watch an hour of one and an hour of the other and somewhere in the middle you may find the truth.

1. Jerry Falwell and Pat Robertson said America is damned " cursed by God, though not permanently " because we tolerate feminists and queer people.

2. John Hagee says America is damned " cursed by God, though not permanently " because we tolerate Muslims.

3. Jeremiah Wright says America is damned " cursed by God, though not permanently, suffering from hate and division, from bitterness and envy " because we succumb to hating one another.

For my money, my Bible, and my democracy, that last sentiment has the ring of truth, and I"m not even a religious person.

Dr. King (MLK) also criticized the American government in his time more than once. The Republicans and also some democrats criticized him at that time in the same way as they criticize Dr. Wright now. What if Dr. Wright is right? Many things he has said, many of our European allies/friends have also said them. Stop being offended by the TRUTH!

'yes we can!' (did) 'Stop being offended by the TRUTH!'

the BBC has been beating itself up about it's failure to ask questions before the war for YEARS, the rest of Yurp was there, already. the new york times et al have STILL not apologised.

perhaps you need, gasp, some sort of 'socialialised' media and not just PBS (on which I can hear Wright, unfiltered) supported by chickenfeed. just a friendly suggestion ...
