OUTSIDE GARMSER, Afghanistan — U.S. Marines in helicopters and Humvees flooded into a Taliban-held town in southern Afghanistan's most violent province early Tuesday, the first major American operation in the region in years.

Several hundred Marines pushed into the town of Garmser in predawn light in an operation to drive out militants, stretching NATO's presence into an area littered with poppy fields and classified as Taliban territory.

Helmand province is the world's largest opium poppy growing region and has been a flashpoint of the increasingly violent insurgency the last two years. British troops _ who are responsible for Helmand _ have faced fierce battles on the north end of Helmand.

U.S. commanders say Taliban fighters had been expecting an assault and were setting up improvised explosive devices. It wasn't known how much resistance the Marines would face in Garmser, where the British have a small base at the town's edge but whose main marketplace is closed because of the Taliban threat.

Maj. Tom Clinton, the American commander at Forward Operating Base Dwyer, a British outpost 10 miles west of Garmser, said the Taliban had undoubtedly seen the Marines moving into the area in recent days.

But he said the fact that the Marines were assaulting the town by helicopter and were moving through by foot was likely a surprise.

"There's all kinds of reports of (Taliban) commanders telling their guys to grab their stuff and get out there" to fight, said Clinton, 36, of Swampscott, Massachusetts. "It's no secret they know we're here. It's just a question of when and where" an assault would happen.

The Marines' mission is the first carried out by U.S. forces this far south in Helmand province in years. An operation late last year to take back the Taliban-held town of Musa Qala on the north end of Helmand involved U.S., British and Afghan forces.

The assault _ backed by U.S. artillery in the desert and fighter aircraft in the sky _ is the first major task undertaken by the 2,300 Marines in the 24th Marine Expeditionary Unit, which arrived last month from Camp Lejuene, North Carolina for a seven-month deployment. Another 1,200 Marines arrived to train Afghan police.

Most U.S. troops operate in the east, along the border with Pakistan. Britain, with 7,500 troops, and Canada, with 2,500 troops in neighboring Kandahar province, have not had enough manpower to tame the south.

More than 8,000 people died in insurgency related violence last year. Militants set off more than 140 suicide bombs. Taliban fighters have been increasingly relying on roadside bombs and suicide attacks after being routed in force-on-force battles in the past.

Many of the men in the 24th Marine Expeditionary Unit served in 2006 and 2007 in Ramadi, the capital of the Anbar province in western Iraq. The vast region was once al-Qaida in Iraq's stronghold before the militants were pushed out in early 2007.

One Marine in Charlie Company, Corp. Matt Gregorio, a 26-year-old from Boston, alluded to the fact the Marines have been in Afghanistan for six weeks without carrying out any missions. He said the mood was "anxious, excited."

"We've been waiting a while to get this going," he said.

"Marines Launch Operation in Afghanistan's Taliban Terrority"

If the year was 2001, this would be a great headline. 2008 - not so much.

Why has CNN decided to make Iraq and Afghanistan invisible? No mention for days.

The Taliban's views of Islam represent a prevarication of Islam who have infused their tribal values into the Islamic faith. As long as Afghanistan has to put up with these fundamentalist tribal hillbillies they will never be secure as a nation. There is some hope. There is a reformation of Islam taking place in Turkey by eminent Islamic scholars who are going to return Islam to its pristine non-violent origin (just recall that the Prophet Muhammad had difficulty with warring tribes as well). This may go a long way in taking Islam out of the hands of these tribal nut cases. As evident, the Taliban have brought no peace--nor will they ever bring peace until they are reformed. It is sad that it has to come down to tribal hillbillies v. U.S. Marines.

Hey NATO! Get a clue and give your small contingent of troops some help, and stop standing back and making the U.S. carry all the heavy baggage.

It was the US that got attacked on 9/11 by the Taliban enabled El Qaeda. NATO is there as a favour and to show their support. If you recall NATA wanted nothing to to with Bush and his childish attack on Iraq.

Now if we weren't in Iraq.

Pure bull, Mr Totalliberal. First of all, plenty of Europeans died in the towers. Secondly, it's much easier for these Islamofascists to attack Europe than the United States.

No, this is what we in the U.S. military have become use to. We do the heavy lifting and the Europeans wring their hands with hesitation.

The Taliban needs to be kept back on their heels. The only way is to hit them again and again much like you spray for cockroaches in your house. That is unless you are ready for the resumption of executions of women during half time at soccer matches.

Stop using the Iraq conflict as an excuse for European forces to shrink from their responsibilities in Afganistan. That dog don't hunt.

Now this is where we should be fighting. The Taliban are heartless pustules.

point taken, but frankly, a pustule with its own circulatory system is more terrifying than one without.

Yeah I'd like to know where BHO gets off with his USMC Tshirt (playing basketball - what else) - I worked hard to qualify as a marine he just goes out and gets a t-shirt I wouldn't ever mistake him for a marine.

Also, I'd like to know how we can incorporate the Pastor of the "church of what's happin' now" into operation chaos to keep this mess going as long as possible - it just keeps getting better and better.

Rounder, as you well know being a Marine, Obama's past use of hard drugs would make his enlisting on the Corps a bit difficult. Pot is one thing. Cocaine and crack is quite another.

You're out of touch -- the Marines, like the Army's elite combat units, are taking pretty much anyone these days to meet recruiting quotas. The new Corps. ad campaign should be "The Few. The Proud. The Available." -- believe me, past substance abuse is no barrier whatsoever as long as the recruit presently tests drug-free and is otherwise physically healthy.

Karzai asked the U.S. last friday not to conduct operations without Government authorization, and remarked that it is Al Qaeda we should be going after, not the Taliban. Al Qaeda is not in Helmand province.

The Marines are an extremely effective fighting force, and it sounds like they are keyed up to fight. It is not their job to figure out who they should be fighting, but to fight who they think is the enemy. So, who is our enemy? The Taliban, assisted into power by Al Qaeda, or Al Qaeda? Could not the powers responsible for giving orders to the marines figure out where Osama and Al Qaeda are? Why is Al Qaeda being given such an easy time of it?

Because we didn't get it right the first time and they have regrouped and it's fighting time again. The real question is why are we in Iraq?
