LOS ANGELES (AP) _ For starters, Paula Abdul isn't going anywhere. "Why would we get rid of Paula?" wonders Cecile Frot-Coutaz matter-of-factly, when questioned about possibly nixing the wacky "American Idol" judge now infamous for _ among other things _ critiquing both of Jason Castro's songs after he'd sung only one.

All the chatter about Abdul's slip-up during Tuesday's "Idol" performance show doesn't faze the FremantleMedia North America CEO and "Idol" executive producer. Nor did the subsequent speculation about the singing competition's authenticity.

And really, why should it?

"I love that everyone was talking about it," she told The Associated Press over lunch in her office two days after the show. "It was so unexpected. It was something that took up 2 seconds of airtime. You'd think there was no other news on television."

To Abdul's credit, the incident happened following an on-the-fly format switch.

"We thought it would be a good opportunity for the judges to give the contestants a good kick in the butt and tell them they were going to have to kick it up a notch for the second song," said Frot-Coutaz. "That decision happened during the live broadcast. It was at the very last minute, so Paula wasn't planning on doing any judging."

In the moment, Abdul claimed she skipped ahead to her notes on another contestant. It was later revealed the gaffe happened because she had scrawled some impressions on Castro when _ gasp! _ she saw his dress rehearsal.

This practice, revealed many times over in seasons past but not scrutinized until now, is hardly grounds for termination. To Frot-Coutaz, it's not even cause for blame.

"It's not her fault," she said.

Frot-Coutaz _ who oversees development, production and business operations of "Idol" and several other U.S. series, including NBC's "America's Got Talent" and the CW's "Farmer Wants a Wife" _ said Abdul is "great for the show" and called her a "great team player."

It's just the latest in the long line of "Idol" follies that have popped up since the show debuted on Fox in 2002 and went on to become the most-watched show on TV. Frot-Coutaz brushes off presumptions that "Idol" is manipulated.

Instead, she points to the fact that the show is very big _ and very live _ as the cause for all brouhaha.

While controversy isn't new for the franchise, slipping ratings have been. Viewership for the Tuesday performance show featuring Abdul's blunder were the lowest for "Idol" in five years. On Wednesday, over 22 million viewers tuned in to watch Brooke White eliminated from the competition, according to Nielsen Media Research.

"Nobody's alarmed by the ratings dip," said Frot-Coutaz. "We're still 7 million viewers ahead of the second-biggest show. And let's face it. TV has taken a huge decline this year. All the networks are down by quite a bit. I think the writers strike really hurt. A lot of viewers haven't come back. You can't just look at an isolation in the environment."

Addressing rumors about potential changes for season eight, Frot-Coutaz said adjustments may be made to evolve the show, but insisted there are no plans to rework or remove the audition episodes that have started each season. And _ besides Abdul _ there's also no plan to replace Randy Jackson, Simon Cowell or Ryan Seacrest.

"They're a great cast," said Frot-Coutaz. "They work very well together. If it's working, don't fix it."

One thing Frot-Coutaz is considering reworking: "Idol Gives Back." She was uncertain about how much the second "Idol" charity event would raise "when a lot of people can't afford to pay their mortgages," although she was "very pleased and surprised" with the $67 million in donations.

Despite that generous figure, she's not sure the segue will return next year.

"I would like to take a break, personally," said Frot-Coutaz. "In the U.K., they do 'Comic Relief' every two years. I think that's the right amount of time. I don't think you should go back to the country and ask them to donate every single year. I think it's too much. Every two years to me feels right."

Not so for "Idol" itself. Frot-Coutaz doesn't see an end in sight. She points to the longevity of another FremantleMedia-owned show.

"If we're smart about it, there's no reason why 'Idol' wouldn't keep going," said Frot-Coutaz. "Just look at 'Price is Right.' It's been on for over 35 years."

I liked the "Cold Hearted Snake" music video ... that's about the extent of any meaningful comment I have about Paula ... other than she needs a real friend I think.

I never saw the show so I can't comment on that, but would like to know what's up with Paula?

I can't believe so much attention is paid to this type of programming - reality TV (supposedly). It's not only boring but trite and tedious as well. It's a glorified "Star Search." Where are the days of Garland, Streisand, and Piaf?

Dump her. Mix it up. The show has tanked. Lose the silly call in question segments, where the questions are known and shown on the screen in advance of the callers asking them. Cut day two to a half hour. Choose people who are ALL talented, and stop dropping in average people with sad stories. On second thought, who cares? I can't imagine watching another season of this crap.

I wish my boss was so forgiving. Jason Castro should have chewed her out Simon style.

"YOu're a bloody awful judge."

Ratings slide. Paula does a double flip off the deep end. No correlation? Riiiiight......

She is part of the craziness that goes on. People love that kind of mess, dirty laundry... You have a nut that people can't wait to watch the next show to see what wackiness is gonna happen.

I do wonder if Ms. Abdul has some long term mental health/psychrachic problems and possibly an issue with painkillers. We do know she has had significant injuries from her being a dancer as well as accidents, she has had to use powerful painkillers and indeed may still need to use them. Perhaps it is time to replace her with someone who doesn't have her problem on air.

Too bad Cecile doesn't get it. She is in a bubble and cannot understand that we cannot STAND the bad auditions. Further, she does not grasp that when you put a Sanjaya through it turns people off. Oh, that's right she also produces that hideous America's Got Talent. Now, that is one bad show. Tight, tight, tight is what Idol needs to be with a serious no cheese zone.

Could somebody please explain to me what this nonsense is all about? I watched the clip of this on youtube and I just kind of scratched my head. Wow! She made a totally irrelevant mistake! Nobody's ever done THAT before! And on TELEVISION! Holy confusion, Batman!! Stop the presses! What is the world coming to?

Who...gives...a...scheisse?

Can we please return to our regularly scheduled program now? I have an important life to conduct.

They will never get rid of Paula because of her uncertainty . I have only watched on and off for 3 seasons, but I'm always cognizant of the "intoxicated" Paula. Be it pain killers or booze, you can clearly see the difference in her personality. It kind of sucks to see this persons personal addiction played out in the most watched program. It is the quintessential train wreck, despite the the horror, you cant stop watching.

Pass the drugs Paula!

Is.. the...she's the... of herself and I... see her coming through. She was true to who she is. I.. just want to pinch her head... off and hang her from my rearview window. She is so cute! But, she needs to take risks... she plays it safe and... we want to see more of that cucumber and peach salad that is inside of her.

The above is a critique of Paula's performances using her native tongue from Pluto. There she is known as The Great Oral Moonbeam.

She always says "I don't drink! I don't take recreational drugs!". Hmm, well, one person's recreation is another person's day job I guess...

I'd say she's on the Ozzy Osbourne perscription protocol.

It looks like Idol is getting media attention from her slip up. It is just like Clinton telling lies or Rev. Wright running off at the mouth. The Media now has something to do. Maybe more people will watch Idol to see if Paula slips up again.

What's the news. My daughter said over a year ago Simon said in an interview the judges evaluate the singers from the dress rehersal because it was easier to hear them and they were not as nervous because they were not in front of a large number of people. All the judges have their notes from the dress rehersal. I do not see the big deal in this as it was public news over a year ago. So Paula talked about the second song before it was sung for TV. She heard it before.

Come on we all know Paula is a good person - but she is clearly a train wreck -
and as fun and unimportant that her normal comments are - this was pretty tragic.

Who the hell knows if she saw Jason sing twice before the show. She's paid to sit there and judge.
That was her job - period. If you or I mess up in our job we're called on it.

Her 'words' are likely the least to effect the competition but she screwed up -
the PR buzz is Jason sang both - however Randy knew what to do - ?

Please don't come to work high, I am sorry your neck hurts so much Paula -
but enough -

I used to watch AI, and I especially enjoyed the early auditions. It was popcorn and train-wreck night at my house, and we liked it. This year, I haven't watched more than two episodes. The auditioning went on far longer than it needed to. Then came along the SAME OLD SONGS that the contestants drag out EVERY YEAR. Auh! Then...we all found out that the contestant are hardly non-professionals. One had a recording contract, someone else was on Star Search and a few others had CD's out there. Amateur competition my ass!

I kind of understand why Fox picked the semi-professionals. Some of the so-called winners have been total losers, with the exception of a token few. Who's fault is that? I blame Clive Davis. The record company gave them crappy songs that sound like everything else and the monotony is painful. The same power ballads, the same fake-y rock sound and the same cheesiness. The company forgot that we like cheese on TV and not on CD's.

Maybe next year AI will dump the cookie cutter approach, ban some overplayed songs, prohibit the Las Vegas show celebrities from coaching anything and they might regain some relevance. Hard to say after the fortune they squandered this year.

It's a reflection of a dead flat cultural place that some people are in. There is no excitement without risk and rebellion and sex. When the media has stripped all these things from culture and replaced them with safe sacharin substitutes you have what passes for music in the mainstream nowadays. The only thing worth listening too has to be underground now. Like the fifities.

Idol just exemplifies the "dumbing down" of America. We've got a lightly educated, mass-market, lower-income culture, by and large--and this show both promotes and panders to it. If the show had three bright, articulate judges, Idol would be passable. Instead, it has one and two others who should not be getting a ton of prime-time air-time. Abdul is wacked out and dumb, and Randy "Yo Dawg" Jackson is the show's conduit to the African-American community. If only he, an "accomplished producer," could put three intelligent sentences together. But he IS teaching a generation of already undereducated young Americans that is OK to walk around saying: "Yo dawg..." and "You had it together on that song, bro." Of course the show actually originated in Britain, where it did have three lucid, intelligent judges. Sad how we have to make things stupid to appeal to Americans.

Paula Abdul survived a horrible car crash.

Paula Abdul survived a horrible plane crash.

Paula Abdul was a ruthless and demanding diva way before both crashes.

Paua Abdul is now a ruthless and demanding diva as before but now on extreme medication that she, unfortunately, won't be able to stop taking due to damage from those accidents.

And that's what you're seeing in her behavior.

Someone mentioned that they thought the kids needed to stick to singing songs of their own time period. Well, I think one of the saving graces of the "SHOW" is that is it exposes not only the contestants but many of the younger member of the national audience to a broad range of music that they might never come to hear or possibly appreciate. Of course I"m probably bias since I like everything from big band and classical to blues, jazz and hard rock.

Paula being loopy, stupid and clueless is one thing and I can tolerate that to some extent. But the woman is rude to boot! She always has to have the last word, she always interrupts and yells over Simon and Randy when she disagrees. Simon may be acerbic, but you never see Simon interrupting or booing the other judges. Paula is just plain rude, I wish someone would punch her right on the mouth, THAT would be great TV.

This has been coming for a long time, I saw Paula in a hotel lobby a few weeks ago eating a banana, 'so what?' you say. Well she DIDN'T break the pieces off before eating them, she just bit them off.

That was okay, but did she have to rub it all over her face before biting it?

I wouldn't watch American Idol as much if Paula wasn't a judge. I personally think it is hilarious that someone who can't sing very well and had a few hits, is out there shaping the minds of young people. Her inability to put the vicodin down until after filming a show confuses me, but also makes me laugh real hard.
