Operation Anti-Chaos: The Narrative on "White Voters" Is Fiction

I turn on the TV, read the political columnists (and a significant number of analytically-challenged bloggers, too) and all I hear is a bunch of white folk prattling on about their favorite narrative: "Obama's losing white voters!"

They've swallowed the Clinton racially-obsessed spin, hook, line and sinker. Some, because they are gullible, haven't an original idea in their little pea brains, and follow the pack of what everybody else is talking about. Others, because they like to toss around knowing falsehoods. Nary a superdelegate can go on Fox News without being berated by an anchorperson screeching (this is pretty close to an exact quote): "But your duty as a superdelegate is to select the most electable and that's Hillary Clinton!" That these anchorpersons are Republican partisans openly cheering for Senator Clinton is our first clue of the game afoot. One of the major successes of Rush Limbaugh's Operation Chaos is that it has got all the right-wing pundits and reporters marching lockstep behind the effort to give Clinton enough oxygen to keep slashing away at Senator Obama, who remains the prohibitive likely Democratic nominee.

And when Clinton wins state primaries that, because of demographics, she was always going to win - last week, Pennsylvania and next week, Indiana - they then wave that event up like a blood-soaked flag as proof of their narrative: See? See? We told you so! White people won't vote for Obama!

So imagine my pleasant surprise this morning to see a New York Times columnist, Charles Blow, who did what none of these chattering lunkheads have done. He looked at the hard data of how voters, white and black, view the two Democratic candidates - favorably or negatively? - and how those views have progressed over time. The data is based on multiple CBS-New York Times polls (among the most respected survey outfits among competing pollsters) over two years and more. Check it out:

blow.gif

Nobody - not blogger, nor superdelegate, nor cable news anchor - should open their mouths with another word about this contest until they've studied those graphs and the numbers upon which they are based. Blow explains:

Since January, the Clintons have pummeled Barack Obama with racially tinged comments and questions about his character...

The question is this: Have white Democrats soured on Obama? Apparently not. Although his unfavorable rating from the group is up five percentage points since last summer in polls conducted by The New York Times and CBS News, his favorable rating is up just as much.

Wait. The numbers show that the cynical effort to turn the 2008 campaign into a race riot has hurt the popularity of one candidate among an important demographic, and it's not Barack Obama:

On the other hand, black Democrats' opinion of Hillary Clinton has deteriorated substantially (her favorable rating among them is down 36 percentage points over the same period).

So, to sum up: Look at the damn graphs. You can see that Clinton is in a staggering free-fall among African-American voters, her favorability is down 36 points while 17 percent view her more negatively than before, while Obama's favorable and negative ratings among whites have paired at five point increases. You can even see the small dip - about two percentage points - in his popularity among whites that can be attributed to the news cycles about his ex-pastor, and see that it has leveled out and is now on a straight horizontal line (meanwhile, Clinton's numbers among blacks continue on an extreme downward precipice). The greater context is that even including Obama's slight dip, he's more popular today among white voters than he ever was prior to February.

Not since Ronald Reagan has an American presidential candidate withstood such an assault in the media and seen his popularity not hurt by it, but, rather, galvanized by it. That's what is meant, in politics, by the term "Teflon."

Those facts won't stop many media (and Internet) talking heads from continuing - whether out of gullibility or intentional dishonesty - to prop up the "white voters" narrative, but it ought to inoculate you, kind reader, from believing it.

Don't let yourself get upset when some idiot repeats the false media narrative. Don't plead with them to tell the truth (they won't; remember, they're either stupid or dishonest). Mock them. Ridicule them. Expose them as the lightweights they are showing themselves to be, with all the confidence that understanding the hard data ought to provide you.

Let Operation Anti-Chaos begin!

So Lavisiterm should we all be proud that Hillary may have squeaked by Senator Obama as a result of Linbaugh's cause to keep this race going? According to CNN reports last night 11% of the Republican voters that voted Democrat in yesterday's Indiana primary supported Hillary ( she won at least 53% of their vote).

While one can blame voter manipulation, the Linbaugh factor, in the end, we will sadly learn how far the Clintons will take this, "full speed to the White house", when unity is at stake. There's little left to respect about her campaign. She doesn't seem capable of accepting defeat with dignity or putting the goals of a party and a diverse people with pressing needs above her own. She is showing what terrible leadership skills her experiences will bring to a world that needs better.

Amazing. It is such a crying shame that the media is so damned shallow as to simply pick up whatever tripe is easiest to feed on. That reminds me of something else that does that: cockroaches.

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 05:09 PM on 05/06/2008

Brilliant post, Al! Hillary lost a long time ago, but MSM and her folks forgot to tell her. Actually, they know it, too, but it serves their purposes to perpetuate all KINDS of lies to keep the crap going, kneecap Senator Obama, and install Clinton now and McCain in November. Clinton's ever-changing narratives are now MSM's headline stories.

These graphs support the contention of David Brooks, the NY Times conservative columnist, that demographics have been trumping ideology throughout the Democrat primaries and will continue to do so.
Brooks was referring to more detailed demographics than the race-based preferences alone. He maintains that urban, educated, upper income Democrats of all racial backgrounds favor Obama, while lower income, blue-collar workers, predominantly white and rural, favor Clinton.

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 01:12 AM on 05/06/2008

Don't forget the older white pop.. the latino and asian votes. OOPS left those out of the demograpics. They are the most likely to vote for Clinton. Pretty good sized majority, right there. Also, they are the most likely to switch over to McCain.

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 11:06 AM on 05/07/2008

Older whites maybe... but MCCain is not going to grab the Latino or Asian demographics with anything out of the normal amount who would vote for any Repub.

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 11:28 PM on 05/07/2008

Well quest 44...I don't agree with your scenario, which I see as just what I stated, a scenario. One of which Obama supporters trumpet constantly, YET,ook at which areas Obama chose to address. Large inner-city populations. Blacks. Whites still hold the majority of race in the US.. I don't like the idea that that's the way it is but that is a fact.. Also, we have to watch out for the overwhelmingly white population of Republicans. They will not (as basically a cult belief) vote for a black candidate. It's hard for them to swallow to vote for a woman, but they will if it comes down to it IF, they fear, as they should that McCann will not be a decent President. There are too many crossovers from Repubs to Dems to discount the fact that they just might return to their party. Also, remember, the delegates pledge is not binding. Nor are the superdelegates.Had anyone recognized their error in voting for the "golden boy" now Teflon, in the earlier primaries, this mess would not be going on. He was a God of speech not of substance and he's still that. That's what got him where he is. Yes there is "buyers remorse" galore.
It never ceases to amaze me that people actually believe the Clintons have greased hands. now THAT is an OH PLEASE.. Everyone knows Linbaughs and "out" so he doesn't matter.

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 09:21 AM on 05/07/2008

Oh please !
CNN in the very begining of this race showed where Obama was winning and the demographs of each are .It showed he won amoung blue , white collar ,educated and none educated ,young and old voters. They also showed the math that made it impossible for her to win even if she won all the remaining states . Now something evil is in the air and the media has changed their tune .Why is that ? Have the Clintons greesed the right hands to change the media's focus from the truth to Hillary's way of thinking .I think so .If this election is rigged by the Clinton's," as I fear it might be." then you can hand this election over to McCain because some Republicans have followed Rush L. 's lead and voted for Clinton in the primaries hoping she gets elected so McCain can have a chance of beating her which they know he wouldn't have with Obama . All you foolish Hillary supporters are playing right into the Republican's hands and shame on Hillary for allowing this to happen.
During an interview the interviewer told her Rush told Republican's to vote for her .Her comment was he always was sweet on me she said with a laugh . This is no joke people if we want to win in november we better get the facts straight and vote for Obama who would win against McCain and stop falling for the Republican tricks .

Just like "The False Front Brassire Co.", it's all about perception. We'll see what happens tomorrow. Hard to grasp that people can fall for her crap. Gas Tax holiday is DOA and she still keeps pushing it anyhow. I guess I've lived in the boonies to long and still I don't believe anything Hillary says. I'm a 68 year old white educated female on SS. Gas here is over $4/gal and the gas tax holiday only served to raise the price last time it was done.
The media is biased, hillary lies, threatens to obliterate Iran, in violation of UN charter, Jeeezo! WTF! If she wasn't running for POTUS, she would be declared 5150 and go to a mental health hold for being a threat to others.

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 11:57 PM on 05/05/2008

Agree! I'm not whining over the losses of Clinton. I'm with you that only four states should be allowed to change. I was so alarmed by that as I truly didn't believe people were information armed to vote so early. Problem was: They (Michigan and Forida), i believe, were told not to hold their election then and they did it anyway. . SO WHAT! I believe no matter what, everyone should have thier vote counted. Period. The DNC should have never made that rule. They have now managed to alienate to huge populations

DiMaio v. Democratic National Committee:Michael Steinberg Argues Constitutionality of DNC Rules Before Federal Appeals Court

The Democratic National Committee is violating the equal protection clause of the 14th Amendment by allowing only four states to hold caucuses or primaries before the first Tuesday in February, a Florida attorney argued March 17, 2008 before a federal appeals court.

Attorney Michael Steinberg filed suit in August on behalf of Democratic Party activist Victor DiMaio. The suit came after the DNC said it would not seat Florida delegates at the national convention because the state party defied party rules and scheduled its primary for January 29.

Steinberg argued that the 14th Amendment, which bars states from denying individuals equal protection under the law, should prohibit the DNC from creating rules.

"You can't treat the citizens of some states differently than other states," Steinberg told reporters after the hearing. "What I tried to assert is that the DNC has the right to make rules ... but the rules have to be the same for all the states."

DiMaio, " who speaks for Floridians, told reporters it's unfair for only four states be allowed to hold primaries or caucuses in January.

Going before February 5, you're basically screwed because you get no delegates,". "We've lost 210 delegates. We're the fourth largest state in the nation, and we have zero delegates."

. If the appeals panel rules against him, he said he'll petition the Supreme Court, and he predicts the DNC would do the same.

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 11:28 PM on 05/05/2008

Talk about a pact with the devil - the only way this suit has a chance is if the activist, ultra-conservative Supreme Court agrees to hear an appeal and create law.

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 12:47 AM on 05/06/2008

jkminwa: Thank goodness (for once on Bushes part) their is a conservative Supreme court agrees to an appeal. Now there is hope! Regardless of how mislead voters were, they followed what they thought to be true and right. They should not be punished and should be heard and counted. By the way, it was a Republican idea that started the whole lmess with an early voting day, I'm still tryilng to figure out if the Dems who went along with it were for the Rebubs or Obama winning or were flat out dummys. I'm more inclined that those who are holding the votes back form being counted are Obama supporters. Politically correct you know..

Uh, this would be part of the "nuclear option" of the Clinton campaign discussed here recently, as well as on major media outlets ever since the Clintons adopted the Kitchen Sink strategy.

Last fall Sen. Clinton said acceptingly of, at least Michigan (paraphrase), "Well, those votes just won't count."

Desperation and fear are ugly things.

The deal was that Hillary was going to win with a landslide, and the decertification of the two states didn't matter.

Sounds like Cheney talking about flowers and chocolate, on the walk into Baghdad.

Life's road is full of twists and turns, rises and declines.

Somewhere out there, some people think, "hope for the best, prepare for the worst".

We'd better figure out a way to get out of the tar pit, before we run out of gold.

Why do you people always blame Hillary for Obama's inadequacies, failings, and negative politics? It was Obama that failed when trying to psychoanalize blue collar voters, it was Obama who attended Wright's church for 20 years (serendipitously missing all of his inflammatory sermons), and it was Obama's campaign that played the race card first.

It's not that whites won't vote for a black man. It's that over 15 million people see through Obama's BS. You can call it racism. We call it being good judges of character. You can claim all you like that his character is better than hers but that won't make it so. They're both politicians. He ran on anti-politics and having better character. She did not. Who's been the liar here, saying anything just to get elected? Real people go for authentic. Hillary has been the most authentic in this race.

And just look at the comments of those below! Not intelligent! Not clearly thought out - but much more like "birds of a feather stick together" with the bullying writer of this piece who starts out his piece on grossly negative tone by putting down and making fun of bloggers - from there it only gets worse!!! I mean, look at the tone and language of some of the comments to your post! And ANewYear can't even come up with his own comments - he has to quote the writer......who copies someone else's charts and LURLIE? - that kind of language is considered pathological abuse! Is this what Obama supporters are all about? Will most just do anything they can - lies, name calling, distortions, bullying? This is NOT a good sign folks cause birds of a feather do often stick together...........

According to "Fast Company" magazine, in the year 2010, the "baby boomers" will be outnumbered by the younger generations in Ameria. (they were refering to constomers, not voters) Like it or not, the times are changing.

Barack might me our best bridge to keep everyone on the same road, moving in the same direction.

juangault: Like it or not, the times ain't changing yet. Remember we baby boomers still hold the gold. In 10 years if Obama wants to go for it again, Power to him, but not now. Barack will not be our best bridge. He will instead flat out divide the country. Whites still hold the majority. not by much but still there and counting. By the way, this hasn't been our first rodeo). So thnk. This mess reminds me of Woodstock who in turn for "love and peace" turned against the soldiers who were protecting their rights. At the same time,Black Pantheres became a household name who some idiotic white kids thought they could be a part of. BS. . Disrupting young idealistic pups for the most part. Oops! I meant to post my comment on Elizabeth Edwards liking Hillary's health care plan under another Huff article. Sorry to interject here.

As for this article, thank you Giordano. I truly appreciate the graphs provided; it appears that Hillary has certainly lost ground! I hope this is because Bill and Hillary have been race baiting (it's not just the conservative press). Personally, I would like a white politican, like Hillary, to openly consider whether being white has provided her with any unearned privileges. I am just tired of her "do anything to win approach".

HAPPY to disappoint you " slimconnors" but EVERYTHING I heard today on the news, on talk shows, reports - speak of how HIllary Rodham Clinton has narrowed Obama's previously double digit lead to a - NOW very small margin in NC - which "can't be trusted" at this point as a lead and she's ahead in Indiana! ALSO it was reported all day that Hillary Rodham Clinton NOW has the momentum while Obamas has slowed way down! Given a few more days of her getting more exposure - there would be NO DOUBTS at ALL!

And what of Obama going to any length to shut up his reverend, best friend and mentor for 20 years - no small deal? I'd call that ANYTHING - including alienating what seemed the most important person in his life - JUST SO HE CAN BE PRESIDENT? It sure didn't matter to him that he spent the last 20 years with him - for better or for worse! Or maybe he's just "talkin" and not really meaning what he says? Either way, it's just like you said about HIllary - only it's REALLY Obama who's willing to go to any length to be President!!!!

I hope many, many more people would read your article.

Hillary's Health Care plan is the wrong approach and it scapegoats the uninsured. 80% of the people who are uninsured in this country are working people so their employers are not providing them with health care. While it's true an employer may be more concerned with profits, it's also true that costs keep rising so some employers stop covering employees or providing insurance for their dependents. and others pass the costs on to employees in the form of increased premiums and higher co-pays.

Barack Obama understands that the problem is that health care costs keep increasing and that's why individuals [and even employers] find it unaffordable. My own monthly premiums went up nearly 25% this year yet it is increasingly clear that my salary will not even be adjusted up for a cost of living this year due to the economy and a state budget crisis. Senator Obama is a thoughtful leader and his plan lowers the cost of health insurance. He is not effectively blaming the uninsured.

As for Hillary, one should consider why she is for individual Health Care Mandates for ALL and even stated she would garnish a worker's wages if one didn't enroll in a health care plan when she received $854,000 in contributions from the health care industry in 2005-06 (making her the 2nd highest recipient among Dems/Repubs alike-former Republican Santorum was #1!).

favoriteFavorite Flag as abusive Posted 08:10 PM on 05/05/2008

The problem with the rising healthcare is 'cost shifting'. This happens when the healthcare systems treat non-paying patients or under paying patient. The 'loss' is 'cost shifted' to the 'paying' patient (in this case your insurance company). Because the insurance companies need to keep solvent, they increase rates to cover their 'loss'.

Non-paying patients and under-paying patients come into the system thru Medicare, Medicaid, Peachare, tenncare, medical, and on and on.

In georgia, the 'free' medicaid system cost 2 billion dollars per year. Every dollar is about 6% what is charged by the doctor, so extrapulate that out, and you will get 33.5 billion dollars cost shifted to PAYING patients.

This is simply one state and one program, now extrapulate that to the entire country.

a real problem wouldn't you say?

This constant attack on Obama has turned people sour on the Clintons. The Mainstream Media seems to be in lockstep with the Clintons. Clinton has called Barack an Elitists and this sticks. How can a couple who just recently paid off school loans "OUT ELITE" the Clintons and the McCains who are worth millions?
Rev. Wright would not be her minister. Where is Clinton's Minister? Does she go to church.? Why is it everytime they show the Clinton's in church it is a black church? Don't forget pictures of them embracing the Rev. Wright. According to the Media and the Clinton and McCain Campaigns, Rev. Wright is now more important than the IRAQ War, 52 dead soldiers and the Economy, Gas Prices.
Clinton thinks we should OBLITERATE another country and its citizens. Then we wonder why that part of the world hates us and their young people are willing to strap bombs to themselve and blow up everyone. She is now acting like the Bush Administration. Wars that Old Elitist men and now a Woman, seem to want to commit our young people too.
The Gas TAX. Another fabrication. How will she get the Congress to sign such a bill into law and put Thousands of workers out of job who build the roads and highways with that Tax. She is now smarter than most economist who are against the plan? ARE THE VOTERS REALLY THAT STUPID. According to the Talking Heads and FOX News, I guess so.

It won't put thousands out of work, they aren't getting to work anyway becaue Bush has spent all the money on that stupid war of his..
