Coal's Sacriligeous Caroling

?>

In a time of year when it can be hard to go into public
without being overwhelmed by Christmas carols, the sound of jingling bells can sicken many of us. And, it is hard for many to associate this season and carols with any form of religiousity due to the mass commercialization of across the spectrum of holidays of Christmas, Hannukah, Kwanza, and ...

And, basically every single religious song has been parodied or spun off in multiple ways so that any idea of purity seems dead. Thus, it surprised me that I was shocked at the latest parody of a set of Christmas Carols courtesy of the coal industry's mouthpiece, the American Coalition for Clean Coal Electricity (ACCCE): the "Clean Coal Carolers" with a set of lyrics that take their truthiness and deception to a whole new level of depravity.

The Clean Coal myth

Last week, Al Gore and a coalition of leading environmental organizations launched This is REALITY.org. Simply put, despite all the glowing ads that you've seen and bipartisan romancing of clean coal, "clean coal" remains not much more than powerpoint slides and technological dreams that might (MIGHT) work in 20 years or so, at a very high cost. What is the reality today?

Simple fact: COAL IS DIRTY! From mountain top removal, through distribution, burning, and the waste, whether fly ash deposits, particulates into our lungs, mercury in the oceans, or CO2 in the atmosphere.

Going caroling with Coal

You, too, can go caroling with lumps of coal. Normally institutions working to destroy humanity's future don't receive links from me, but the absurdity of this simply astounds. To the music of "Deck the Halls", you will get to cloth your lumps of coal (clean scarfs, hats, ear muffs rather than with ventilators for black lung disease and clothing smudged with coal ash) and then "set the scene" (winter scene, desert island with sailboats in the background, birds flying over green mountains with a sunrise, or a bird on an electrical wire in city in winter -- note, they don't provide more honest choices like a smokestack spewing pollution or animals dying on a heap of fly ash or dirtied snow in the devastation from mountain top removal (MTR) mining. Now that you've set the scene, time for caroling. Your song choices:

  • Frosty the Coalman
  • Clean Coal Night
  • Abundant, Affordable (Adeste Fideles)
  • O' Technology (O Christmas Tree)
  • Deck the Halls (with Clean Coal!)
  • Jingle Bells

Let us take a look at just the first of these:

Frosty the Coalman is a Jolly Happy Soul He's Abundant here in America and he helps our economy roll

Frosty the Coalman is getting cleaner everyday
He's affordable and adorable and helps workers keep their pay
There must have some magic in Clean Coal technology
For when they looked for pollutants, there was nearly none to see

Frosty the Coalman is a Jolly Happy Soul
He's Abundant here in America and he helps our economy roll

Thumpity Thump Thump ... Thumpity Thump Thump ... Look at Frost Go.

Toward Energy Independence we go ...

Let us repeat, "clean coal" is an oxymoron on multiple levels. But the fantasy the coal industry is trying to sell is that the key coal pollutants are already being capture when, for example, we are decades away (based on current optimistic estimates) from any widespread capability to capture and sequester carbon dioxide. Decades away, that is, if we ever get there. But, if one joins these ever so cutely dressed lumps of coal, you will have the idea that this is already in place, that coal is "abundant, affordable" and already "clean" today. From "abundant, Affordable":

And we can count on clean coal for years to come.

The audacity of lying in such a direct fashion, not even twisting truth, but simply creating a fiction is amazing. The absurdity of creating lumps of coal to promote these lies moves beyond pitiful and dismaying to disgusting.

The families of those 24,000 people dying prematurely per year, in the US ALONE, from coal-fired power plant pollution might not be laughing along with ACCCE's "Clean Coal Lies Caroling'. As per Kevin Grandia,

Nothing like mercury emissions, asthma attacks, and melting ice caps to get me in the holiday spirit.

Some other reactions:

You won the PR battle this time! Looks like the pressure got to them -- they pulled the carolers. I bet they hadn't thought they would get this kind of exposure and had to get them down quickly. I also bet that their industry backers got upset about the SIlent Night sacrilege.

Worlds largest planned coal power plant: 12,000 MW probably will operate with a 90% CF .

World largest planned solar power plant: 280 MW, probably will operate with a 19% CF

Bottom line: we are no where near able to remove coal from the picture.

1. And this proves what?

2. What is "no where near able" refer to? It is certainly technically and resource availability by 2020, in US at least, although that is an agressive timetable. There are multiple cost-effective strategies to remove coal from the electricity grid within 20 years, for the US, and perhaps a few more globally. Is " 20 years "no where near"? It is faster than we'd get "clean coal", that captures CO2, deployed on any serious a scale.
12:05 PM on 12/18/2008
That's not true. We have pilot CO2 projects going up, built and ready for startup.

Where are your sources? You have alot of words, not alot of fact.

All I could say over and over while I watched those freaky little coal chunks singing messed up coal christmas carols was: WTF?

Its completely messed up that they actually got in professional singers to sing those messed up songs.

And some guy in the desert pretending he's in a powerplant is better? Every person I know thought it was a POSITIVE ad for clean coal. No one got the gist.. and they were all confused by the ending.

I would just like to point out the 3 ads at the bottom of my computer for this page, and how delicious they are:

Just wondering, but what is the reality of solar and wind today? Please show me the reality of electricity technologies that work as an alternative to coal/gas/nukes. They don't exist right now, just like clean coal doesn't exist right now.

The point is that you should not be prematurely limiting your options because a solution does not exist now, there have been never been incentives for anyone to create a coal plant that captures its CO2. There have been incentives for solar for the last 50 years, but I haven't seen that pipe dream pan out.

Well ...

1. In anywhere of this post, is there a call for shutting down coal today? Turning the switch off?

2. Roughly, wind added in the range of the equivalent of 10 new coal-fired electricity plants last year. And, it's growth rate is over 25% per year.; Solar far less than that. But, especially due to concentrated solar power, this is getting a real boost for the 2010-on period, with multiple signed contracts for 100+ megawatt facilities. Neither wind nor solar meets coals contributions today ... and, well, just a few percent. On the other hand, they are growing at very solid double-digit rate and have the potential for quite significant penetration of the electricity system before clean-coal comes on line.

3. In terms of near term, considering that coal is 50% of the electrical grid, the #1 near-term path is through driving waste out of the US electrical usage pattern. Not talking "conservation" (but that can be a choice), but efficiency which can significantly reduce demand.

4. Want to have a research program to prove out some form of carbon capture and sequestration/reuse. YEAH! But, let's not pretend that clean coal (including low CO2) is anywhere close to a reality.
05:14 PM on 12/11/2008
1 - Not in this post, but the some of the people you cite advocate shutting down coal, other advocate no new coal plants period.

2 - There are major problems with wind and solar that limit their potential. Wind and solar are extremely variable, and the nature of electricity is that you need to have production math demand every second, if a cloud comes over your solar array or the breeze dies down, bam your out of luck, just look at what happened with the massive Texas blackout, and can you imagine how much worse it would be if wind/solar is 10x what it is now. You need some sort of storage medium before wind and solar can be rolled out on a wide scale.

3 - I agree, negawatts are as good as megawatts

4 - Lets also not kid ourselves that wind/solar are any where close to a reality in terms of providing >50% of our electrical generation and replacing coal.

BTW, typical coal plants operate near 90% CF, typical solar/wind operate closer to 10%, so that 100MW is more like 10 MW on average, which is a drop in the bucket compare to say a 3,000 MW coal plant. Wind/solar add a few tenths of a %, not a few %.

Coal keeps this country going. And there IS clean coal. A decade ago liberals like you were SHOUTING about how acid rain was going to DESTROY THE EARTH. Guess what? Haven't heard that song. WHY you ask? Because people like ME are building flue gas desulfurization systems that pull that SO2 out of the flue gas and then use it to create GYPSUM WALLBOARD that probably BUILT YOUR HOUSE. The only way you'll be happy is if we all cease to exist. Why don't you go figure out how to make China comply with our EPA standards, because as of now, they are the ones poisoning the air you breathe and they don't answer for it. They don't regulate it. They can do things MUCH cheaper than we can do here in the US and you know how? Because of places like WALMART. You want to start a cause, how about boycotting CHINESE PRODUCTS and start buying American.

"There is clean coal ..." There is a moving target. Absolutely agree that coal is cleaner today than 30 years ago, with significant reductions in Acid Rain due to the Clean Air act (which was fought, tooth and nail, by the industry as going to wipe out the ability to provide affordable electrical power to the nation). Thank you (and those you work with) for programs / technologies that are working to make coal less dirty.

But ... what about particulates and asthma? What about mercury? What about ... And, what about CO2 (and its implications for global warming and acidification of the oceans)?

But, "clean coal" is now referring, writ large, to the ability to control emissions that relate to Global Warming. Are you telling me that exists?

RE PRC: agree that we've exported manufacturing to places that, among other things, have even laxer environmental standards and thus there is a double-hit when it comes to GHG: not just the less efficient (higher polluting) production processes but the additional burning of oil to move things long distances.
10:38 AM on 12/11/2008
We're working to capture CO2 economically and efficiently - so we don't put the US out of business in the process. We are developing technology. There is a fight for survival right now. We are competing with countries that just don't give a dang about our health and future.

We DO remove Mercury. TMT15. Look it up. We're bringing it online in several power plants across the country. This is new technology. You can't snap your fingers and have change. It's a process. We need to find ways to advance industry with minimal impact on the environment - I agree. But we can't do it at the expense of putting every American based company out of business because they cannot compete with places like China and the bargain basement prices they are shoving down American's throats. Get rid of NAFTA. Get America back to it's roots. American built, American made. WE CAN SAVE THIS COUNTRY.
10:42 AM on 12/11/2008
Hg can now be reduced through the use of technology, so can PM2.5 and PM10 (ESPs do a great job of that). If you put a system in place to limit CO2 the technology will be found to capture and sequester that too in deep saline formations, but you can't blaime the coal industry for fighting it tooth and nail, that is their duty.

It is the congresses duty to pass the laws regulating th emissions, if you want to get pissed at someone go get pissed at the Michigan Dems or the Repugs, not coal. The coal industry has a responsibility to their owners, and to the local communities they serve, and that does not include CCS, it is up to congress to pass laws to coerce the coal industry into making clean plants.

End discussion?

Wow.

1. Coal has been a keystone for the American economy for over 100 years and help fuel prosperity here. Yes.

2. Alternatives exist: starting with pursuing energy efficiency to reduce the demand for the power.

3. We now know, definitively, that coal is causing significant impacts that harm us today and are setting us up for far more serious harm tomorrow. Coal is allowed to be burnt without any responsibility for all those "external' costs like mercury in the oceans, increased asthma, premature deaths, and that pesky little problem of Global Warming. Want to try to make "external costs" internal?

No, not "end discussion".
