Gay Soldier Killed in Afghanistan

What's Your Reaction:

Congressman Jim Moran read a letter on the floor of the House of Representatives today from an active duty soldier in Afghanistan. Congressman Moran stated that the soldier had, "learned that a fellow soldier was also gay, only after he was killed by an IED in Iraq. The partner of the deceased soldier wrote the unit to say how much the victim had loved the military; how they were the only family he had ever known." The soldier originally provided the letter in response to an inquiry for the Pentagon's current study of "don't ask, don't tell."

This is the second publicly known case of a gay soldier killed in action during the current wars in the Middle East. The first was U.S. Army Major Alan Rogers, who died while on patrol in Iraq in January, 2008. Statisticians have estimated that more than 200 gay and lesbian service members have perished since the onset of the conflict.

Military leaders this week suggested in Congressional hearings that gay and lesbian troops disrupt the force. They said that they don't know what would happen if gays and lesbians were allowed to utter the words "I am gay", because there is "no data" on this question. They said that because we're fighting a war on two fronts, we cannot be bothered with such matters. They said that what really counts is what the troops want. Therefore, we need to do a survey so that service members can tell us what military personnel policy would be. (A Washington insider tells me that this survey will cost $7 million).

It has been hard to fathom why, in 2010, we're having this conversation from an alternate universe.

Until yesterday, that is, when media reports surfaced explaining that retired General Peter Pace is helping to coordinate opposition to gays in the military from his perch on the powerful Defense Policy Advisory Board.

Pace, you may remember, was the first military leader to tell the truth about the issue when he was Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. When asked why the Pentagon must ban gays, he said that homosexual conduct is immoral.

There you have it. Homosexuality is immoral. The reason the Chiefs are telling members of Congress that we're just too busy to deal with this issue has nothing to do with uncertainty about what would happen, or a lack of data, or being at war on two fronts. It's all about morality. And no matter how many sacrifices gay and lesbian troops make defending this country, that's all that matters.

Bigotry is immoral. God creates gay. Seems a lot of bigots claiming religion for themselves have a lot of trouble accepting God's handiwork.

The top marine, James Conway, said today that he doesn't want DADT repealed.

I wonder if the draft were to be re-instated if the gay community would still wish to see DADT go away?

What do you think it reveals?

I'm simply curious, that's all.

It would not be the first time people have betrayed their principles for self-interest. I do not mean to imply gays specifically are in some way morally deficient, nor do I refer to the gays who have chosen a military career. But how many of those who would not wish to serve in the military would like to have it as an out?

It is immoral to continue to accept the sacrifice of Americans serving in silence and denigrating their families and memory and name.

It is immoral not to extend the birthright of equality to an American who would willingly serve and die to protect yours.

DADT is immoral.

Stop enlisting to serve and die for a country that could care less about you. Stop reenlisting. If you're an officer, resign. If the top brass doesn't want them, then stop serving and dying for these ingrates.

I'd say they have a lot more integrity than that.
In fact to do that, you'd have to have NO integrity.

Rachel Maddow said she would post the text of the letter on her website Rachel.MSNBC.com. If someone would post that link I would appreciate it. My browswer doesn't seem to work there.

What I think is hysterical is the threat that service people will leave because suddenly they might have to interact with gay people. What a crock! They're already serving with gay people!
and
if they are frightened by the prospect of being seen naked in the shower by a gay person? Watch out because it only gets worse when there are bullets flying and IEDs exploding in the war zones! If you're frightened now, you'll be frozen in fear then!

Here rests a warrior who served and fought and died for our country. But that doesn't matter, we've been told. What's really important is where he showered and bunked.

I served in the USAF from 1960-1964. lackland had the notorious HeadRon where gays were discharged during basic training. I saw gays separated after basic for being gay. I also served alongside gays at my primary base.

the most dangerous officers in the military are the graduates of the US Air Force Academy who have been brainwashed and indoctrinaed against gays for the past twenty years,

I sense that the most vocal gaybashers in the military are, themselves, closet gays.
05:19 PM on 02/25/2010
It would be interesting if that were true, and may well be for some - but most are really just lonely people, angry at life and looking for the proverbial enemy.
They need the angry righteousness - it's the only thing that gets them out of the bed ion the morning.

What's immoral is a retired military general working behind the scenes to undermine his country's military.
05:14 PM on 02/25/2010
Apparently you misunderstand where Gen (Ret) Pace is coming from. In the Uniform Code of Military Justice homosexuality is listed as a punishable offense, thus it is immoral from the perspective. Remove homosexuality from the UCMJ and you negate his arguement.
05:56 PM on 02/25/2010
But the charge of immorality was not from that.
It's what he believes.
He may well have used the UCMJ at some point to back up his stand, much like right wing christianists try to rule this country using parts of Leviticus etc - but really, it's all just pathetic excuse making, trying to say "Im not a hater or a bigot, Im just following the orders of my god, or my boss".
It really is very sad.
And indicative once again as to what right wing 'leaders' will do to wriggle out of any responsibility for their actions.

To stereotype all US citizens in the same category is as silly as those who brag "US is the best country in the world". Many of us know that the US has its good points and bad points, and like most places, we have our skeletons and things to be ashamed of, and like most places, we have work to do to get where we should be. To me, its not about being best, its about being honest and charitable, searching for understanding and exploring our environment, realizing that we all live on this same planet. There are many people in the US who view themselves as citizens of earth before citizens of the USA. Those whom you find disgusting have the same mentality of stereotyping large groups of people and that is what disgusts you, so be careful you do not disgust yourself.

To stereotype any group of people is to be unfair. It's hard to not stereotype though, particularly if you lack direct exposure to a group, and one must constantly watch themselves against this easy habit.

I agree that many are good, honest people who don't necessarily see them self as any better than other races and nationalities. I have spent some time living in America and know these people exist. What's sad, both here in Canada and America, is they are the voices seldom heard.Nationalism and self-righteousness are the blaring, omnipresent message assaulting you wherever you turn.

I have never met a person, straight or gay, who is comfortable with their own sexuality, to give a jot of concern about the sexuality of other people. With those who are well-adjusted it is a non-issue. It is only an issue for those who have trouble with their own sexual identity and are threatened when the question arises. So boards like this are like honey to flies and brings out those whose own sexual orientation is suffering some significant internal conflict. By following their irrational arguments (of which religion is one, of course), you can see that they are desperate to shield themselves from what is their own inner torment.
