Fill Rahm's House Seat With A Progressive

digg Share this on Facebook Huffpost - stumble reddit del.ico.us RSS

Want to put a bold progressive in Rahm's House seat in the March 3 special election? Here's what you can do.

If you live in DC, join us this Monday evening at Local 16 for a fundraising event for Tom Geoghegan, and meet the candidate himself. There's a high-dollar fundraiser later in the evening, but tickets to this netroots fundraiser event are only $30. Get them here. Facebook invite here.

Not in DC? Please consider donating to this bold progressive candidate anyway. Read more about Tom and donate to him at the event's ActBlue page. Every dollar makes a big difference, especially with just 5 weeks left. (If you buy raffle tickets you can still win, even if you're not at the event.)

The new Progressive Change Campaign Committee is organizing this event, along with a bunch of progressive organizers as co-hosts.

Here's the invitation Jerome Armstrong is sending to everyone he knows in DC, posted by him on MyDD:

Hi, I wanted to make sure you know about a fun event this coming Monday evening in support of a really inspiring progressive who is running in a special election to replace Rahm Emanuel in the House. Can you make it? Here's the link:

Mr. Geoghegan Comes to Washington

Tom Geoghegan is a famed labor lawyer who wrote pro-worker books like "Which Side Are You On?" David Sirota calls Tom "one of the greatest living progressives in America" and a writer at The Nation wrote "Tom could be the next Paul Wellstone."

There will be happy hour drink specials, and a raffle at the event will include autographed books by Rick Perlstein, David Sirota, Jerome Armstrong, and the January 21st Obama Inauguration issue of the New York Times.

Tom has already raised over $100,000 in mostly small-dollar contributions, but he'll need $500,000 to win. Tickets are $30. Raffle tickets are $20 each in advance, $25 at the door. Every dollar really goes a long way, so the more you can give, the better.

Would be great if you could make it, and help support this progressive candidate. Just click here to sign up:

And again, the Facebook invite is here -- feel free to tell your friends. More from Jerome:

It's a special election, which means low turnout. Five or six well funded candidates means vote will be quite split, and any advantages of someone with a ton of money will not be as large as it would in a general election. Money raised thus far appears to not be an advantage for anyone. Tom is reaching the goal of having enough money to execute on his field and message plan. His message of economic security is playing really well and he's got authenticity on these issues that no one else can match...It's going to be a split vote, and Tom, a real true progressive, has a great shot to win this wide open race.

Please sign up for the event -- or give from afar to Tom Geoghegan's campaign -- today. With just 5 weeks left, every bit of support makes a huge difference.

Tom needs our support, whereever we send it from.

He is a pro-labor, Green Dog Democrat. This is a safe Democrat seat and the Republicans are going into shrink the base mode.

Time to bring in the man with fresh ideas. Republicans have none. Blue Dogs have none.

Support a true progressive. Support Tom Geoghegan.

Great.

Unfortunately the election won't be in DC, it's in Illinois.

And Democrats aren't doing so well out here right now.

I'm one of Rahm's former constituents, and the Democratic Party is alive, well, and absolutely thriving in the city of Chicago right now.

Actually, I live in Chicago presently, and the Democratic Party of Chicago is at its weakest point in a long time. The taint of Rod Blagojevich, who was overwhelmingly supported in Chicago in 2006, has impacted Democrats substantially. Democrats were hoping Blagojevich would step down not only for his own misdeeds, but also because in so doing, he would allow Pat Quinn to appoint a Democrat to Senate, avoiding the possibility of holding a special election for the seat that favored Republicans.
Instead, Dick Durbin, for whom I voted, and Harry Reid pretended to show resolve by refusing to appoint Burris. Then, those leaders utilized a convenient escape route, claiming that they had bigger issues to address than blocking Senate appointees, despite the fact that the Burris appointment calls into question the legitimacy of Durbin's home state governance.
The District seat will go to a progressive Democrat (my pipe dream is Charles Wheelan), but while the Democratic Party may be thriving in the District, it is in a valley right now in the city at large.
