McCain Downplays McCain's Endorsement of Obama

digg Share this on Facebook Huffpost - stumble reddit del.ico.us RSS

Presidential candidate John McCain and running mate Sarah Palin attempted to manage the surprise endorsement of Barack Obama by Senator John McCain this past Thursday. McCain was dismissive of his 100% endorsement and even took a few shots at himself after the announcement.

"When all is said and done it's still just an endorsement," said the seemingly annoyed Senator to reporters during a campaign stop. "There are hundreds of endorsements out there but it's still up to the voters to decide. As for me I will be voting for the candidate I believe is best: Barack Obama. But I hope that voters will take that endorsement with a grain of salt and consider the source."

Barack Obama was clearly caught off guard by the endorsement that few Washington insiders saw coming. "What do you mean he endorsed me? That's fucking fucked up," said the usually unflappable front runner in front of several hundred Nuns that he was speaking to at the National Nun Convention.

But John McCain defended his controversial choice to skeptical followers: "I think Barack Obama will be an excellent leader. But that's my personal opinion. I hope that you all will disagree with me and put John McCain and Sarah Palin in the White House!" The crowd then cheered loudly before quickly falling into a confused murmur.

One supporter Joseph Frundel from Oliphant, Virginia was unphased by the endorsement. "The bottom line is, he's a war hero, Sarah is hot and I hate blacks so screw it. I'm not in anyway emotionally able to deal with change or too much new information at once." Mr. Frundel then walked off and fell into an open well laughing madly the whole way down.

Vice Presidential nominee Sarah Palin, sporting a brand new Prada jacket, kept her usual spunk and brassiness. "I believe in John McCain. And I will support him in his support of Barack Obama. But I will also do my darndest to win this election. People ask me how I can do both at once and I tell them "Because I say it with confidence and I look good on camera." The crowd then broke into loud high pitched cheers that quickly became shrieks. Several people were torn limb from limb. Only 32 fatalities were reported by relieved authorities.

Dear Sir,

Last month (Sept. 8) your blog entry called upon the general public to get out there and make an impact. Specifically using the internet. Obviously, you have a large following of your own and even more so with your website Funny Or Die. I love all of the new political stuff, especially Ron Howard's latest. Nice work as always. It has been through your suggestions and the power of the internet that inspired me to create my own Barrack Obama ad.

Entitled, "CHANGE CAN ONLY HAPPEN IF YOU VOTE". Currently it is hosted on YouTube and has been featured on CNN. It's very short (34seconds) and includes over 100 very diverse Barrack Obama supporters. I considered posting it on Funny Or Die, but as it is more direct than anything else, I thought YouTube would probably work best. However, considering that I do sketch comedy on a regular basis, if you'd like to make a funnier version of the spot, I would not be opposed. As long as I am involved, of course. :)

--- holy shitake! did I just use a freakin emoticon? uhg. how gay I'm I?

---please don't answer, it was rhetorical.

BARRACK THE VOTE BABY!!!!!

Adam, you totally freaked me out for a minute... I read this twice (the second time out loud to myself) before I realized it was satire... Nice work; we all need a shot at comedy with this race.

Adam, that was hilarious - thanks for the laugh!

I'm fairly new to the blog world and was thoroughly confused reading this. But, it's not far fetched. A few ays ago (when was it? all days are merging together) McCain said in front of a PA croud that the "other side" was saying terrible things about western PA. The he said, emphatecially "and I agree with him" I ..er..agree with you...I agree with whoever I should agree with. SNL couldn't have done it better!

Let nobody claim that I am in any way sympathetic to the McCain campaign. I very much hope that the McCain Palin team suffer the kind of repudiation that cannot be ascribed merely to the economic crisis, but which urges the conclusion that their kind of bigotry has no place in civilized nations, including America.

That said, I caught the full performance of McCain at the Al Smith dinner. It's perhaps more damning of his campaign as anything I've seen, not because what he said was offensive, but for just the opposite reason. At that dinner, he came across not merely as affable and at peace with himself and the world, but as a man who rejected the politics of race. I would encourage others here to find part 2 of his speech and look at his remarks 2 minutes in. Those were the words one expects to hear from a man who would be president, and yet they are utterly at odds with everything being done on his behalf outside the sanctuary of the Al Smith dinner.

McCain might have started this campaign, by posting these words in every campaign office, above every phone bank, on the front of every Republican canvasser's clipboard he had and bid them read it, memorize it and repeat it before being qualified to knock on doors.

While I doubt it would have changed who won, it would surely have better squared with his slogan "country first" and, in the end, closed the contest.

You had me too for a minute. Not only is it possible for McCain to screw up like that but it would be one of the most honest statements put forth from him since his campaign started. It would be like "the old John McCain", but he's gone now. Funny as it is, McCain does know that Barack Obama is the better candidate, even though he will never admit it.

You had me going for a second there, after all why wouldn't he endorse him, after all he has done everything else he could possibly do to ruin his chances, LOL I STILL think in that last debate he was trying to send a morse code signal with his blinks to tell us to vote the other ticket.

Hilarious! But true! We've got to take all the lies and rhetorics in this campaign with a grain of salt--and humor--in order to salvage our sanity. McCain's own endorsement of Obama has so far been the most powerful: "He is a decent family man, and the voters should by no means be afraid of him as President of the U.S. (This is not an exact quote, but it'll do for the purpose herein.)" Only by not taking John McCain seriously can we reconcile that statement with his call that Obama palls around with terrorists, etc., for they are mutually exclusive. It's good that McCain is coming to grasp with the fact that he was beaten by a better candidate who happened to have chosen a better vice president as well.

Ooh, VERY unfortunate about the national nun convention incident! I guess that's what comes from sitting in the pews of Reverend Wright for twenty years! ;0)
