Tennessee Flood Victims Need Your Help

What's Your Reaction:

With waters finally receding, those affected by the floods in Tennessee need your help now to begin repairing and rebuilding their lives. Thousands have seen their homes and businesses flooded. According to Nashville Mayor Karl Dean, "I think it's safe to say that the damage we're looking at will easily exceed $1 billion."

Thousands in the Nashville area need your help. The Community Foundation of Middle Tennessee has two funds you can support to directly help those affected by the floods:

Flood Relief - Metro Nashville Disaster Response Fund

"In partnership with Davidson County's Office of Emergency Management, The Community Foundation of Middle Tennessee has activated its Metro Nashville Disaster Response Fund to help to those affected by the May 1, 2010 floods. Donations of any size are welcome. Grants from the fund will support relief and restoration in the Davidson County area."

Give to Metro Nashville Disaster Response Fund:

Flood Relief - Tennessee Emergency Response Fund

"The Community Foundation of Middle Tennessee responds in times of disaster to connect generosity with need and has activated the Tennessee Emergency Response Fund to support relief efforts throughout Middle Tennessee necessitated by the May 1, 2010 floods. Donations of any size are welcome. Grants from the fund will support relief and restoration in areas of Middle Tennessee affected by the floods."

I am so sorry for all of those families. My thoughts and prayers are with them. I live in Chicago, Illinois and I have tons of clothes, shoes, robes, coats, socks, summer clothes ect. I want to give to the families. Does anyone know of a drop off place where I can bring all these clothes, coats. I really want to help. Also my Uncle lives in Tennessee. PLEASE somebody respond. Thank-You.

I wrote this also to CNN and to the American Red Cross will you post both of these comments.

Why is it that you take 60% of the donations you receive for your own purposes. This is so wrong. Our Lord and Savior asks only for 10%, why can't you do the same. I will not donate to any orginization that gives so little to the poor and homeless. I pray that the Red Cross changes its policy.

I would like for CNN to know this fact as I have asked Salvation Army and The Red Cross how much of the donations they receive and Salvation Army said that most of the money they receive goes to the helpers who work for them and the rest goes to the poor. From what I can tell 60% goes to Salvation Army and 40% to the poor. Plus the same is true for Red Cross. Why is it that the Lord asks only for 10% of our money and we are richly blessed. My feeling are that Salvation Army and Red Cross should do the same. Especially Salvation Army, because they claim to be a church. The Salvation Army red kettle around Christmas also 60 % goes to the Salvation Army. This is so wrong, I pray that this practice changes before their final days are over here on this earth.

As a resident of middle Tennessee, I am deeply saddened by the lack of empathy shown by some of the posters on here. Regardless of how much money Al Gore makes, claims on his taxes, or donates to charity, the essence of his message on this blog is true. The state of Tennessee has been devastated. People have died and thousands have lost everything. If you read the basic content of his post, he is simply trying to spread awareness of this disaster, and point out the dire need for help that the people of Tennessee are in need of. This is not a political issue, this is a humanitarian issue. Natural disasters such as this one, can strike anywhere at any time, and when they do they should be addressed as the humanitarian crisis that they are.

There are plenty of other blogs and message boards available for political commentary. I urge everyone that is putting in their two cents about Mr. Gore onto this message board, or any other politicians for that matter, to show a little class and vent your political frustrations elsewhere. By turning this blog into a political rant, you are continuing to divert attention away from a dire situation that badly needs attention, and literally turning your back on fellow Americans. Please leave this blog for what it was originally intended, that being commentary related to the Tennessee disaster.

Sometimes it needs to be pointed out, what you pointed out Eric Normand, the blog is about the flooding and damage in Tennessee, not Al Gore. If there is a lessen to be learned, whether the negative posts are coming from conservative or liberal sides -- cruelty knows no political ideology, it is in the heart of the person, no matter the party affiliation.

I think you have it wrong. the Right gets Al Gore riled up.

Hey Al,
As long as the people of Tennessee elect Lamar Alexander, Bob Corker, and Zach Wamp, they will not receive an ounce of pity from me let alone a donation.

If you show you area as cruel, as any of the people you dislike ( I assume you feel somewhere they carry a cruel thread in them). You are showing you are no different.

If you show you ARE (correction of type "O") as cruel, as any of the people you dislike ( I assume you feel somewhere they carry a cruel thread in them). You are showing you are no different.

As a resident of middle Tennessee, I have to say that it's simply untrue that we have been ignored by President Obama or Washington in general, the federal government is helping. President Obama called Tennessee Governor Phil Bredesen first thing Monday morning and asked what was needed. Other White House officials also called the governor throughout the day, helping to organize. By Tuesday several counties had already been declared federal disaster areas. Since then, the governor has said “I’m very, very pleased with the response we’ve gotten from the administration.” Local, state, and federal government agencies are working together with what has been a tremendous volunteer effort across the state. Of course more help will be needed, but it is simply unfair to say we have been ignored by the president or Washington. What we are being ignored by, is the media.

What else do you expect him to do? He's been sending aid since last Monday. Do you expect him to part the flood waters like Moses?
10:41 PM on 05/11/2010
If he had done so, there are some for which that would not have been enough. He could've been here sandbagging, saving pets and old folks and people would still complain.
10:50 AM on 05/10/2010
Al Gore would make a great president.
I saw him in a documentary talking about losing someone to lung cancer after his family got out of the tobacco business. He said, "Ya don't wanna go like that."
Sticks in my mind as I hack up boulders. If I could quit smoking, I would.

anyway...

This is a terrible tragedy . All I can hope that the the citizens that want no government in there lives change there views . I bet those affected by the flood will file for government help ? The victims of the flood will want funds to rebuild their homes and lives ? At the same time the majority will support the Tea Parties and no government involvement. Has anyone done a statistical study as to how many tea party members collect Social security , Medicare and Medicaid?. Only when someone i in the conservative states are affected personally then they want government help .Is Sarah Palin raising money for Tennessee? How much has Palin donated? Is the Tea Party raising funds for the flood victims? Yet most of Tennessee support the Tea Party. the Conservatives and the hate .

Hypocracy to the max seems to be the Liberal's way. What you state, is because the government has caused you to rely on them and now can not do without them.
An animal in the wild can defend itself and hunt for it's food. If you begin to put food out for it everyday, it will begin to rely on you feeding it and will lose all ability to sustain itself without your help.
A lazy animal in the wild would perish. A lazy person, with the government's help, will just keeping feeding off the people and become dependent.
It should be a local area's responsibility with help and aide from the people and churches that take care of the situation at hand. Do you really need a big house and cars, going out to eat and running your debt to the max? Responsible saving and spending would put more money and food into the hands of the hungry and homeless. That would keep government size down and taxes lower.

So you are saying that only liberals build structures on flood plains. Only liberals fake disabilities. Except for this guy I know that takes his check willingly and spends his free time bitching about the government. Except this red state that I lived in once that got back way more from the federal government than it pays into it. But those are just exceptions right. All the the rest of the republicans in America are the only ones that work while liberals live off the sweat of the republican's brow. Except for those damn Mexicans that are doing the nasty jobs so that you can have cheap food.

I really do think the tendency to slack is a non-denominational, non-partisan, non-racial, equal opportunity human trait.

There is a ray of hope in this disaster that has struck our state of Tennessee, and that is the people, the ordinary citizens who are moving forward with strength and conviction to rebuild communities across the state. Today, A week into this disheartening disaster, people are out in throngs, working hard across a wide array of rebuilding efforts. Even though it's a Sunday, I saw Comcast trucks, railroad workers, and volunteers working diligently at many locations in my place of residence, the town of Pegram, in Cheatham County. There is a long way to go, but I'm truly impressed with what is becoming a unified, concerted effort to move forward. To all that have showed their support by offering positive comments on here, I would like to say thank you.

Wow, lots of h8ters here. How unfortunate.

I wish everyone effected by the flooding the best, whether they voted in 2000 the way I would like or not. They are all Americans.

Those ranting and h8ting here should devote some of their energy to trying to help.

TabysGrandma: U miss the point. The majority of the people in Tennessee are supportive of the Tea Party and the conservative movement . They do not want Government in their lives? They do not want to pay taxes to help people rebuild their lives ? But now they are happy to have Government intervention to build new homes and rebuild their lives . How many Tea Party members will not accept Government aid to rebuild there lives? They are happy collecting Social Security , Medicare and Medicaid , but at the same time do not want Government in their lives?

The majority of Tennesseans are not Tea Partiers. And it certainly is a minuscule, statistically insignificant portion of Nashville's population.

As a resident of middle Tennessee, I'm glad to see this blog has moved to the top of the page. That means our grassroots efforts to create awareness of this event are working. The national public perception is that Nashville received a major flood, and while true, the bigger truth remains that over half the counties in the state of Tennessee have been devastated. The drinking water in Hickman County, some 50 miles from Nashville, will be unsafe for at least 2 to 4 months, as water lines have been destroyed. They've also sustained damage to over 100 bridges across the county, which is still in a state of emergency. The city of Clarksville, some 80 miles from Nashville has been devastated as well. Thousands have lost everything and it will be weeks before the full impact is known.

FEMA and the Red Cross are doing a great job and the volunteer effort has been truly inspiring as people are working together in communities across the state. But this rebuilding effort will be costly and lengthy, so additional help will be needed. As a citizen of Pegram, in Cheatham County, I have documented my experiences through this event as well as the experiences of others at my blog at http://www.survivenashville.com. There are many pictures of flood damage in our local area posted there as well links to different websites for those interested in making donations, or volunteering in the relief effort. Please help spread the word.

That is right and Dolly Pardon's husband is from Hickman County. The county was devastated.
11:23 AM on 05/10/2010
And Hickman County is the home to Minnie Pearl. Her statue is in Centerville, and BETH SLATER WHITSON who wrote "Let me call you Sweetheart" and others is also from there. Hickman was flooded and out of contact with the outside world for several days.

Mr. Gore, I find curiously missing from your entreaties
any mention of your own personal contributions to victims
of this catastrophic event.

Of course, paying for your second mansion -- at nine million
dollars, I believe -- probably limits the extent of your potential
generosity, doesn't it?

Your money and your mouth seem to be in two very different
locations, Mr. Gore.

Or am I wrong?
02:08 PM on 05/09/2010
Why is Gore's contribution of any concern to u?
02:30 PM on 05/09/2010
because Albert Gore is a public figure and he needs to lead by example.
04:27 PM on 05/10/2010
The guy keeps using other people's guilt to profit. I wouldn't be surprised if he already set up a non-profit organization that he wants people to donate $$$, meanwhile he pays himself a huge salary as said non-profit CEO.... oh wait pretty sure he's already doing something like that, but it's a for profit business. Get a clue about St. Gore patron saint of the environmental movement. It's not pretty and he should be held accountable.

Horrible though you seem to think Al Gore is, he took the time to ask people to donate to a worthy cause. You, on the other hand, take this opportunity to bash Al Gore once again. Your loathing for Al Gore seems to exceed your desire to say or do something positive for your country or for other people. So I guess that one can safely say that your republican/fox/corpoRATe/peer/whatever programming has been quite successful. You are now a successful Gore bashing robot. CongRATs.

this is just wrong.

please ... make a separate natural disaster section, even handedly report the facts and appropiate links and don't pick 'favorites' by allowing a national celebrity special access to plug their local disaster when other equally deserving situations don't get that treatment.
