Immigration: Is Obama the New Lincoln?

Posted: 07/01/10 11:18 AM ET

When President Barack Obama needs strength, he invokes a Republican, Abraham Lincoln. At his inauguration, Obama took the oath on the same Bible that Lincoln used and embraced the Lincoln legacy throughout the event. The sixteenth president's life and wisdom contains a rich cache of advice for any chief executive in search of guidance, regardless of party. And on the subject of immigration reform the current president would do well to emulate his predecessor's compassion and spine.

Immigration? Lincoln? Yes, like President Obama, Lincoln lived in an era when immigration was a controversial matter. Between 1840 and 1860 approximately 4.5 million newcomers arrived, most of them from Ireland, the German states, and Scandinavian countries. Many more crossed back and forth across the border with Mexico, newly drawn in 1848. States, not the federal government were charged with counting, interrogating, and medically inspecting immigrants. Port procedures at state depots such as New York's Castle Garden were haphazard at best. Millions of Catholics arrived striking fear in the hearts of American Protestants. Nativistic anti-Catholicism cropped up in a pulp literature featuring anti-papist stereotypes and undergirded the politics of the Know Nothing Party of the 1850s. While never serious contenders for national political power, there were Know Nothing governors, mayors, and congressmen who built their careers on opposing immigration.

When the Republican Party was formed in 1854, some Know Nothings drifted into the new party and wanted Republicans to adopt an anti-immigrant stand. Lincoln refused. In an 1855 letter to his Springfield friend Joshua Speed, Lincoln wrote, "I am not a Know Nothing. That is certain. How could I be? How can anyone who abhors the oppression of negroes, be in favor of degrading classes of white people?. . .When the Know-Nothings get control, it [our Declaration of Independence] will read 'all men are created equal, except negroes and foreigners, and catholics[sic].' When it comes to this I should prefer emigrating to some country where they make no pretence of loving liberty - Russia, for instance, where despotism can be taken pure, and without the base alloy of hypocrisy. . . ." In 1860, Lincoln ran on a platform that came out against "any change in our naturalization laws, or any state legislation by which the rights of citizens hitherto accorded to immigrants from foreign lands shall be abridged or impaired; and in favor of giving a full and efficient protection to the rights of all classes of citizens, whether native or naturalized, both at home and abroad."

As we approach the 150th anniversary of Lincoln's presidency and the Civil War, America once again lives under the cloud of war and economic uncertainty. Workers in search of employment pour across our borders. Islamic immigrants strike fear in the hearts of some Christians. Though the federal government is charged with creating and enforcing immigration policy, private vigilante groups and now some states are trying to usurp that authority. As did Lincoln, President Obama must clearly articulate his position on immigration reform, substituting clear fresh vision for the blurry confusion of a contentious, befuddled Congress.

Democrats and Republicans agree that unauthorized immigrants now in the U.S. must not receive amnesty without paying a price. Some advocate fines, others suggest harsher measures. During the Civil War, Lincoln called on all Americans, including recently arrived immigrants, to serve their country. Perhaps a broader conception of national service is the answer in much the same way that many people convicted of non-violent crimes pay their debt to society in hours of community service. The tasks and time commitment for foreign-born engineers who have over-stayed their visas and those for manual laborers already working two jobs to support their families might differ, of course. Those immigrants who help a community clean up after a natural disaster or repair the swings in a playground pay a debt even as they are incorporated into communities they serve. All children need safe swings - natives and newcomers.

Whatever action Mr. Obama takes on immigration, it must honor Lincoln's memory, reflect his fairness and decency, and embody his courage in time of crisis. Trading platitudes with the Arizona governor who signed a repressive legislation that feeds on anti-immigrant sentiment won't do.

Now that all the protestant and catholics and black people are settled in they're busy keeping Gay people away from their civil rights. Isn't it funny, that I, a gay woman in a 33 year relationship, have marched in Washington demanding Protection for other's civil rights a trillion times. I wish President Obama was as worried about my rights as I was about his.

Those riots were more about the $300.00 dollars you could pay to get put of having to serve....so it was mainly the poor Irish in New York City that felt they were forced into the army while the "well to do" could pay $300.00 to not have to serve....there were approx 129.... Total dead in those riots and "Negroes" as you put it were not most...

Too bad Obama does not have the guts of Lincoln when it came to the riots of the newly arrived Irish immigrants who did NOT want to contribute to our country. They refused to be drafted into the Union Army and went about New York City killing all the black Americans that they could get their hands on. Lincoln sent in Federal troops who killed lots of the Irish immigrants. It is high time that Obama emulate Lincoln in regards to enforcing the laws about registering for the draft for ALL males between the ages of 18 and 25 who are required to register no matter their immigrant status. It is a felony to NOT register and Ithink that not only should any male be asked for his draft card if taken into custody, but the US attorney should start prosecution and deportation proceedings if the person is an illegal.

Does O think that deporting African Americans into foreign colonies like Lincoln tried to do, a good idea? I'm sick of Lincoln being placed on a pedestal.

Give me a break! Attempting to compare President Obama to President Lincoln is absurd. However, asking President Obama to pay attention to some of President Lincoln's writings is something more people should do. Notice that the passages cited do not pertain to illegal immigration but to citizens "whether native or naturalized".

I don't think any President can be compared to Abe Lincoln. Each President faces his/(her someday) unique spot in history with its own problems, and it is up to them to step up to the plate and make a difference, or to stand by and just watch history pass them by.

Right now, Obama is not doing anything to fix today's problems, and all he is doing is watching his legacy pass by into something that will never be remembered. Much like people today say, "Coolidge who?", one day people will be saying, "Obama who?"

It is an incorrect comparison.

If the illegals are willing to be shipped to Iraq or Afghanistan to work for US forces then the comparison is valid.

The problem of illegal immigration which has nothing in common with the normal problems associated with legal immigration at various times in history. Countries still have a right to pass laws to protect their borders and determine who they will accept as immigrants and this sovereign right is being violated everyday on the southern border. What good is all the billions spent on homeland security if millions of people can just enter the country without any background checks. It makes no sense at all.

When we had enough jobs, this wasn't an issue. The truth is, we need more young workers to pay for the retiring baby boom. If the system were fixed to allow more Mexicans to come in legally, there wouldn't be a wage discount for hiring illegals and companies would lose the benefit of cheaper work. The real problem that we need to fix is to create more jobs.

'The truth is, we need more young workers to pay for the retiring baby boom'

This is nothing more than the definition of a Ponzi scheme, and furthermore it assumes that low-skilled uneducated workers, a majority of whom are from Mexico (57%), are going to make enough money to 'pay for the retiring baby boom' -- they won't.
11:52 AM on 07/02/2010
You don't think social security and medicare are ponzi schemes? There are two differences between Madoff and social security - Madoff stole from the rich, social security takes it from workers. Madoff went to jail, congress people who keep telling us how solvent social security is get reelcted. Other than that, they are pretty much the same.

Social Security tax is only paid on the first $100k, so being able to earn more than that is irrelevant.

For Pete's sake - compare Obama to Lincoln? The illegal aliens are not slaves and came here deliberately and willingly, also deliberately flouting our laws. Blacks were brought here unwillingly and were bought and sold like merchandise.

This is a ridiculous comparison and made only to get sympathy for those who have broken our laws.
09:14 AM on 07/02/2010
It's far too soon to compare Obama to Lincoln. At this point, it is little more than wishful thinking to try to sway public opinion.

How about the government exhibit fairness to its citizens and taxpayers who are paying billions of dollars a year in taxes to keep subsidizing criminal corporations hiring illegal aliens?

This whole issue is maddening beyond comprehension. We are supposed to have laws and those whose very first act is to break it should not be treated as victims and accomodated.

Really, I've worked with US based corporations and multinational corporations and they basically have no regard for nations or laws if there is a buck in it for them. They make fraudulent H1-B applications and use L visas to subvert H1-B requirements. Really, no limits to their willful law breaking and wrong-doing. And these are jobs Americans want and need in management, IT, and engineering.

They have the same regard for the US, US laws and American people that BP has for the Gulf of Mexico environment.

U.S.-Mexico Border Safety: Area Is One Of Safest Parts Of America
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2010/06/03/us-mexico-border-safety-a_n_598825.html

It's one of the safest parts of America, and it's getting safer.

It's the U.S.-Mexico border, and even as politicians say more federal troops are needed to fight rising violence, government data obtained by The Associated Press show it actually isn't so dangerous after all.

The top four big cities in America with the lowest rates of violent crime are all in border states: San Diego, Phoenix, El Paso and Austin, according to a new FBI report. And an in-house Customs and Border Protection report shows that Border Patrol agents face far less danger than street cops in most U.S. cities.

The Customs and Border Protection study, obtained with a Freedom of Information Act request, shows 3 percent of Border Patrol agents and officers were assaulted last year, mostly when assailants threw rocks at them. That compares with 11 percent of police officers and sheriff's deputies assaulted during the same period, usually with guns or knives.

In addition, violent attacks against agents declined in 2009 along most of the border for the first time in seven years. So far this year assaults are slightly up, but data is incomplete.

"The border is safer now than it's ever been," said U.S. Customs and Border Protection spokesman Lloyd Easterling.

He said one factor is that with...

Yes, as Stephen Colbert said "Reality has a well-known liberal bias."

We see from many of the posts here the FRight-wing is immune to facts, to reason, to logic.

Really reminds me of Orwell's 1984.

Lori Bowles wrote:

"The Department of Homeland Security has already deported more undocumented immigrants than the country ever did under the reign of President Bush. Bush did deport more often than President’s before him but Obama’s deportation totals are higher than any president before him. Last fiscal year, Obama deported over 387,790 immigrants, more than 100,000 more than they did during the previous fiscal year. "
And yet they still defend the last administration, waited until they were out of office and wont face facts that the federal border patrol is working. Tell me something is it because of pride and stubbornness that you wont leave the republicans in the dust?
