Anyone Can Become President

digg Share this on Facebook Huffpost - stumble reddit del.ico.us RSS

When my five-year-old kept talking about what he would do when he became president I always ended the conversation saying, "all you have to do is study hard and if you want it, anyone can become president." Of course I never believed that. I knew a week later he would want to be an actor or a scientist so I thought that was the easiest way to go on to another conversation. But Sarah Palin proved me wrong. ANYONE can now be president.

I like Sarah Palin's public speaking ability. I think she is fun to look at, certainly the hottest vice presidential candidate in history. But I looked up some facts. The United States has 10,000 nuclear weapons, 100 aircraft carriers, 3,000,000 people in the armed forces, and ten trillion dollars of debt.

I am now hearing from the Karl Roves of the world that having a 17-year-old daughter pregnant out of wedlock will make Palin sympathetic to millions of Americans who know the pain of that situation. But my question is WHERE WAS THE ADVICE? Do we want a president who cannot communicate to their own child that possibly having a baby a year after you get your driver's license is not the smartest thing to do? Is this the new way for women to break the glass ceiling? To have their daughters throw their babies at it? I want my president to control their children, then they can tell the Navy what to do.

Check out Stephen Spoonamore on You Tube.

Diebold machines enabled our elections to be stolen twice!

BTW Spoonamore is a Republican who wants fair elections. He claims the voting machines are designed to steal elections for the Republican Party.

Why hasn't anything been done about this?! We've known about this for at least eight years!!

It amazes me just how many people who are willing to overlook all of the lies that pop out of Palin's barracuda lips. It seems like almost every sentence she says is a lie, and each time she tells it, the lie gets embellished and more people believe it. With her vindictive, snide, hateful, and unchristian behavior, along with the lies, and all of the problems that she is having in her family, I can't fathom why our country would continue with this fiasco. No longer does it appear that the republican party votes on facts but it votes on whether a candidate believes in pro-life, nothing else seems to matter at them. I think that even if Palin murdered someone, the extreme religious right, would still be willing to vote for her.

With all of the legal problems that Al Gore Jr. has/had, with substance abuse, etc. I am surprised to see a liberal "progressive" make such silly comments about parenting.

Whipsmart,
Just as an FYI. Addiction is a disease. That's a scientific fact. I can say with certainty that the Gore household did not make it a point to purposely NOT provide their children with the FACTS and the TOOLS to better equip themselves to survive the perils and pitfalls of adolescence in the 21st Century. So a wrong choice in that type of household, becomes a sad and tragic, wrong INFORMED choice. Abstaining from allowing your children to obtain the information and tools to arm themselves to make better choices in this era is actually just STUPID and DANGEROUS. That's a fact.

What sort of parent gambles with the health and safety of their children utilizing 18th Century standards and morality? Don't give me the religious values b.s., either. Because HER stupidity in how she chooses to raise HER children needs to be looked at very closely. If she were making these choices for ONLY her family then I could care less, except to still believe those choices are coming from a zealtory that is not unlike that of any zealotry and still stupid. BUT, she wants to impose these same standards for ME and MY family. That is unacceptable.

That's a fact.

That was after AG left office, not while he was running for the office. Also, AG was not telling everyone how to live their lives or raise their children.

Al Gore may not have been a great parent. It would be ironic that with Tipper giving the media a hard time about indecency in movies and music, her own children would grow up a little while.

But guess what? Tipper's self-righteous attempt at parenting our children for us bit her husband when he ran for President. Several typically liberal people were lukewarm towards his candidacy.

As it turns out, Al, Jr. had problems... problems that surfaces long after his father served as VP and ran for President. Had they surfaced earlier, you can bet that his performance as a father would have been called into question.

So there is no double standard here. If Palin is being judged harsher than Gore, I'm not saying that it's not because he's a man and she's a woman, but that's only one small factor.

The bigger factor is that he never trumpeted his status as a parent as a major qualification to being President. With little else on her record, Palin has relied on her photogenic family to help sell her. And the biggest factor of all is that Al, Jr.'s problems surfaced after his dad ran, not during the run.

This teen pregnancy is being glorified by the media and her "proud parents" who will be "prouder grandparents" as though this is not shameful. From everything Sarah Palin professes to be, this young girl should be considering the course she'll follow (have a boyfriend by all means but practise 'abstinence') in university, not motherhood. Imagine the scandal this would bring to the Obama campaign if his 17 yr old was pregnant!!! He would have to drop out!

For the Conservative and religious fanatics, all of a sudden it's 2 BIG thumbs up to teen pregnancy and GunShot (W/NRA License of course) wedding. Let's get this right, the unborn child is not illegitimate, it's the parents who should be tagged illegitimate.
Poor Bristol and Levi- do they really want to get married or is this just to make the relationship look good to the voting public.
To Sarah- you are not applying for a 9-5 job with weekends /holidays off. I'm quite sure your husband is very supportive to you, a good father, husband etc... but at the end of the day, MOMMY IS NOT DADDY.

Another skeleton in the Sarah Palin closet:
Do we really want an abstinence only believing parent whose daughter gets knocked up by someone who doesn't want kids, toes the evangelical line regarding contraception and sex education, who bore a child with special needs 4 months ago, seek the second highest office in the US.?
And, yes, I WOULD expect this same question to any man who would run for president.

That's about right the way it's going this year. A town PTA member,,, is this who the people want to go represent them. Is this who people want to conrol the button in McCain's absence?

There are more foolish people than smart people in this country. That worries me. Think about it. They voted for the current administration twice,, TWICE! Not once, but TWICE. They are planning to do it again.
Obama answers questions with intellectual facts. That's good for the smart people, but if he is going to win, he has to use very simple small words for the sake of less intellectual voters to understand. He needs to use words like "Pitbull with Lipstick" ,, start every answer with "my friends" over and over just to connect with the not so smart,,,you know, such like language. He must stop telling complicated algorithms to show how he will repair the economy. And please, tell them the surge worked. Don't waste time explaining the Sunni and Shiite and Anbar awakening. That way, the foolish voters will catch up with the issues in very simple terms.
Iowa, Minnesota and Oregon are the most educated states in this commonwealth. They already got it. It is states like West Virginia that are challenged beyond intellectual shallowness. Ado to illiteracy, they also tend to see things in color. If you know what that means.

I completely agree. It is the anti-intellectualism that scares me most. I don't know that there is a regional hold on being okay with dumb and dumber. But the voters who go on gut instinct or who favor the candidate with the best smile deserve what they get.

I've said it before: i have 3 kids. I want them to think that academic achievement is important. Average (and in McSame and Pale-in's case ~ below average) is NOT okay.

The repugs have a long history of putting non-intellectuals in power. I believe this is b/c people who don't know how to think for themselves (e.g., Pale-in's scripted, teleprompted "speech" which annoyed the heck out of me) are so easy to manipulate once they are in office. So, from Reagan to Bush, and now Pale-in, the repugs keep finding these empty vessels that they can fill and use at will.

I understand the Sarah and Todd eloped and had her oldest son less than eight months later. I have no problem that she was probably pregnant when she got married. It does concern me that she seems to lie so easyily to create a an image. She claimed that she eloped to save her parents the cost of a big white wedding. All loving parents want to see their children married and weddings do not have to be expensive. She is not required to answer the why question or she could have just said I was an impulsive young person but her comment was insulting and most likely a lie. Too many lies such as being against the bridge to nowhere and against Ted Stevens, just generally exaggerating her responsiblities. She is right about one thing. Alaska is a rich state and I am sure she does have a strong team around her helping her govern the state of Alaska. With the problems that we are facing we need very superior minds and with much training. Do people really underestimate the difficulty of being president or vice president to the extent that any person who is like me only gutsier will do?

How do you know it's a lie? People elope to save money and they elope when they're in a hurry to get married. Maybe they eloped for both reasons. They are not mutually exclusive.

But they usually do not have a baby eight months later...that is...if the cost on an expensive wedding was the ONLY issue. Lets' not forget 5 or 6 colleges in 6 years...whats up with that? I opened the above link and it stated that Palins' son Trac enlisted in the military to avoid going to jail! And there was an article yesterday that implied that Levi Johnston has another last name in which he has a record.

'Anyone can be President' means regardless of race, religion or economic background. It does not mean regardless of experience, education or ability as the Republicans would have us believe.

You are totally wrong here. No one can "control" their children completely at this age. Most parents recognize that and teach their children about condoms. Sarah Palin thinks she can control her children (though her parents couldn't control her). She thinks all she has to do is say, don't do it, it is wrong. She does not give children a safety valve for when the hormones get hot. Nor does she think there should be a safety valve for children who do get in trouble. We can no more stop people from having nonmarital sex than we can keep them from having abortions - or drinking or doing drugs. It would be nice if we could lay down the law and have it obeyed. That will not happen. Palin's mistake is thinking that laws can stop abortions or any other undesirable behavior. That new Prohibition is what she wants to impose on this country, and it will no more work this time than it did the last. I hate abortion, but firmly believe that it is a mistake to ban it.
(By the way, I just realized what happens when you leave the L out of Palin.)

Teenagers get to experience the surge of sex hormone at puberty in a way that is virginal. At no other time in life do we go from 0-60 on the sexual desire meter at such an akward (sp?) time. They're horney. Keep them safe and responsible, not pregnant and HIV infected.
