Anyone Can Become President

digg Share this on Facebook Huffpost - stumble reddit del.ico.us RSS

When my five-year-old kept talking about what he would do when he became president I always ended the conversation saying, "all you have to do is study hard and if you want it, anyone can become president." Of course I never believed that. I knew a week later he would want to be an actor or a scientist so I thought that was the easiest way to go on to another conversation. But Sarah Palin proved me wrong. ANYONE can now be president.

I like Sarah Palin's public speaking ability. I think she is fun to look at, certainly the hottest vice presidential candidate in history. But I looked up some facts. The United States has 10,000 nuclear weapons, 100 aircraft carriers, 3,000,000 people in the armed forces, and ten trillion dollars of debt.

I am now hearing from the Karl Roves of the world that having a 17-year-old daughter pregnant out of wedlock will make Palin sympathetic to millions of Americans who know the pain of that situation. But my question is WHERE WAS THE ADVICE? Do we want a president who cannot communicate to their own child that possibly having a baby a year after you get your driver's license is not the smartest thing to do? Is this the new way for women to break the glass ceiling? To have their daughters throw their babies at it? I want my president to control their children, then they can tell the Navy what to do.

100 aircraft carriers is less accurate than Obama's 59 states.

i am furious and personally offended that anyone would call a woman who insists her 17 year old get married and raise a kid, or even lets her child get married and raise a kid at 17, a good mother. She is a monster sacrificing the life of her daughter for her career. Any decent mother would have her get an abortion, put the child up for adoption or raise the child herself and let the 17 year old have a chance at life. This is not something to applaud, this is offensive to all of us who understand the meaning of being a mother. I have 7 kids and every one will say we have a great family and they had a great childhood. This woman is an offense to mothers who feel their job is to guide and provide the means for a child to be well adjusted and to make a living. And that is our job.

Maybe that's what the girl chose to do. How do you know she was "forced"?

Who are you to say what that girl should do? It's her life.

Also, the girl is almost 18--an adult. It's her life. Leave her alone.

And it is every other woman's life spalin wants to control. Birth control should be an option whether you believe in abortion or not. If viagra is an option why not birth control?

Not to mention having a high school drop out for a husband. How would he support his family?

The National Enquirer reports that Sarah planned a shotgun wedding and ordered Bristol to get married just after the convention, but Bristol has refused.

Also that Sarah has a poor relationship with Bristol because she has little time for her.

Sarah Palin does not sound like a good mother, to me.

Why is this important to attack someone's personal life? Overall, this does not effect Palin's qualifications to help in multinational orders. Exploiting Palin for a child who may or may not have done something intentionally without her parents consent or knowledge is not Palin's fault. If people are so upset about this, than states should curfew underaged children. Obama was not always so self worthy of moral conduct either and he is running for President. What if this boyfriend doesn't marry her? The boyfriend will be the loser, not the mother. The mother has parents who already support her. As for the deadbeat dad, Good luck.

One would have to live with her to know if she is a good mother. She probably is calculating because she is a politician, and they tend to get away with more things than average people.

Now, a member of the Alaskan legislature is seeking to have the head of the troopergate investigation removed because the release of the investigation was fast tracked to come out before the presidential election, citing partisan politics for motivation.

The legislator starting this is of course republican and the gentleman being investigated (the set up a bi-partisan committee to investigate) is democrat. The quote given was something along the lines of "the findings of the investigation could be bad for the governor's plans".

The investigation's fast tracked results are due to be made public on Oct 3rd. Anyone think that maybe, just maybe, the investigation was fast tracked so that the country would know if they were electing another crook to the white house? As if association with Ted and building a sports park on land she didn't own wasn't proof enough of her ways...

OK, I'll bite. Who's Ted? What sports park? Links, please, or a whole story, or a way to get the whole story, at least.

Not that I support Palin, just extremely curious.

I'm looking forward to Palin showing any doubters she can lead with integrity. I can't understand why women all over the US that are working their behinds off and raising children don't step up and come to her defense. The left wing media continually comes up with lies to destroy her, yet her poll numbers continue to rise. Maybe they really are privately. Maybe that is what will happen on November 4th?

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 12:36 PM on 09/07/2008

You are certainly correct. Palin is a mother, she has five children.

I have three children. My mother had eight children. My sister in law has 10 children. I am catholic, I know a lot of women with many children and great accomplishments. None of them have been beauty queens. None of them have shot a moose (see the picture of Palins with her small daughter, kneeling over the dead carcus of what looks to be Santa's reindeer). And, none of these women, including Palin, should be running for Vice President of the United States.

With Palin McCain has awakened the sleeping low-information voters. That's all.

Most working mothers do a better job of it than Palin is doing.

A poor relationship with Bristol, trying to force a shotgun wedding which Bristol has refused, failing to teach her daughters the facts of life...

Sarah Palin is not my idea of a good mother. Working mother can do better than this.

Working mothers stay out of work for weeks maybe months after there children are born and most get payed for it I think its called maternity leave,so they can bond with there newborns even pitbulls bond longer than 3 days after birth. Not sure of the reasoning behid this behavior

At least you don't have that hateful, hysterical bent that many Democratic supporters have. As far as doubts about Sarah Palin, they will be proven or disproven in the next two months. Until then, McCain obviously says she's qualified, and those who don't have inside information simply don't know. We'll see.

That sounds like having the same blind faith when George said there were Weapons of Mass Destruction.

(There WERE WMDs; the worldwide intelligence community unanimously agreed. They were dispersed before we got there.)

The MSM has proven that they do not want to interview Sarah Palin, they want to destroy her. The MSM hates conservatives, and they hate a conservative woman the way they hate Clarence Thomas, the African American Supreme Court justice.

Anyone who can't see that McCain and Co. will have to solidly have Governor Palin's back before they turn her loose to the rabid, homicidal (metaphorically at least) maniacs running the MSM is either ignorant' or wants to see her torn to pieces.

The MSM is getting what they bargained for. People in America know this to be the truth, and side with her on this.

Why is McCain afraid to let reporters question Palin?

This is historic - the first time a vice presidential candidate has been sequestered from the media.

We the people of the US have to force the republicans to allow the press access to this women how else are we going to know what she is thinking Not a rehearsed statement She must be hiding something and they are trying to spin the web as usual

But she has EXECUTIVE experience! THAT'S the difference!

As someone who lived in a town in Alaska, not much smaller than Wasilla was when Sarah Pallin was mayor, let me add something to that point. Take the population of 9000 and divide by two, to remove the under-21 population and over 65-population. O.K., that's 4500. Then remove all the people who have other jobs or occupations that take them out of contention of running for mayor. What are you left with? Not very many folks who might even be interested in the mayoral position. So, out of a few dozen people, she got the job to be mayor.

Compare that to Barack Obama landing the position of Harvard Law Review editor--one of the plum positions in the country. No comparison, folks. And doesn't that position require executive decisions?

Q: Why do you Obama people keep leaving out the part about her being governor?

A: Because she has spent much more time being a mayor (years) than being a governor (months), much more of a record to go on.

As mayor of Wasilla she was almost recalled, she left the fiscally balanced town over $28 million in debt, and she fired a librarian for refusing to ban books.

She's awfully brave to run on that record. Or maybe not - since she now refuses to be interviewed.

My question is: Why did Palin tell us about her daughter's out-of-wedlock pregnancy at all? Why subject her to potential embarrassment and national discussion/gossip/criticism?

Palin used Bristol's undisclosed pregnancy to deflect questions about Trig's parentage.

Why exploit your daughter by answering a rumor with another rumor?

Why not just have Palin's DOCTOR hold a press conference and say, "Yes, she's reall the mother."

This still doesnt' add up to me. But I'm not impressed at all with any mother who would do this to her daughter for her own political benefit. Why not just have the DOCTOR talk to the press?

I still think it's fishy.

I was critical of this authors observations in my first comment, which got bumped. Presumably because they are only interested in hearing from people who agree. That's unfurtunate but I still believe that Mr Brooks in his comments about how hot Sarah Palin is, sounds more like a lovesick teenager than a seasoned political observer. I personally find her to be average and not at all attractive but that has nothing to do with the fact that I think she's unqualified.

PART III
As a mother (and very recently "new mom"), the Governor must be aware that unwanted pregnancies do occur, regardless of how deep in the woods of Alaska she might be living. Despite this, she continues to believe that "abstinence only" education is a sufficient defense against unwanted pregnancies ! For the Governor, this one-dimensional way of looking at things seems to apply to life in general, as witnessed by her apparent lack of compromise in her dealings as Mayor and Governor. If her deficit in three dimensional thinking transfers to other aspects of her responsibilities, then will she be capable of seeing more than one solution to a potential problem (e.g.: military force vs. diplomatic and economic force) ?. Sadly, I think it will, and the result will be more serious errors in judgement, leading to more economic, diplomatic and military catastrophes for the US.
With this VP pick, Senator McCain has pulled a pitbull out of a hat. At first glance it might seem an impressive trick, but it will come back to bite him in the near future.
I am tempted to say "Shame on you Senator !", but I'll pass. Simply knowing that you'll live the rest of your life tortured by the fact that you have sold out your principles, given up on everything that you once believed in and acted in such a disgraceful manner is punishment enough !

Albert, Albert...FYI, The USA DOES NOT have 100 aircraft carriers!!! They're aren't even that many in the whole wide world...we have about 12, more than any other nation on earth, but NOT 100!! Next time better check your "facts" more closely when you "look them up." Makes me wonder about your "other statistics."

PART II
Next, we find that only months after she herself gives birth to a child with Down's syndrome, her own daughter gets knocked up... Another strike against "abstinence only" dogma which begs the following question: Governor, did your own experience with an unintended pregnancy not compel you to have a woman to woman chat with your own daughter, even if that chat would only include another stern warning of "just don't do it !" ?. If the governor had been caught DUI for example, would she not feel a responsibility to use her own poor judgement as a way of communicating with her kids in the hope that they might take a positive and important lesson from it ? I don't know if she had the time to have that chat, perhaps she was too busy trying to ensure her sister was safe from marauding state troopers...
As a general comment about abstinence only, and the Governor's judgement... I don't think it's unfair to use her own views relating to this dogma as an indication of her ability to think critically and to make wise and well considered decisions in a broader sense (e.g.: as the potential POTUS). I think any reasonable and responsible person would want more than one line of defense, whether it relates to the safety of their family, their country, or their children. In my opinion, "abstinence only" tells a great deal about a person's ability to grasp reality.

...continued in PART III
