What the World Needs Now is Patti Lupone

digg Share this on Facebook Huffpost - stumble reddit del.ico.us RSS

Before I get into Obama, the SAG strike and renewable energy, I wanted to talk about Patti LuPone. Yeah. That's right. Patti LuPone. What the world needs now is Patti LuPone. I have worked in my business since 1980 and I have seen a lot of changes. One thing that hasn't changed is Patti.

That year, the year I started, Patti won the Tony for Best Actress in a musical for Evita. And now, more than twenty-five years later, Patti is as heartbreaking and wicked and volcanic and gorgeous as ever. Maybe more so. Go see her in Gypsy on Broadway. Surrounded by Boyd Gaines and Laura Benanti (both also Tony winners for this show), Patti makes the story of Mama Rose worth seeing again and then some.

Where movies today all too typically use the name of a big star to draw you into a theatre, only to have special effects people take over, what happens at the St. James theatre is live. Real. It is a stage covered with remarkable actors, directed by Arthur Laurents himself, breathing new life into an old story. And, it is Patti. As I left the theatre. a young man turned to me and said, "I liked that a lot and I normally don't go to musicals." Another woman near us smiled and said, "That was no ordinary musical. That was Patti." I told the young man to consider himself lucky. "You're not likely to see that again on Broadway for a long time."

Go see Gypsy. Go see Patti LuPone, one of the great actresses of all time, give the performance of her life

Before I get into Obama, the SAG strike and renewable energy, I wanted to talk about Patti LuPone. Yeah. That's right. Patti LuPone. What the world needs now is Patti LuPone. I have worked in my busin...

Ms. Patti Lupone is one of a kind, yet reminds me of the specialness of actors who chose this profession only after it chose them... Watching her Tony Awards performance, I stood up and cheered with tears in my eyes as she ended the number. BRAVO!

Mr. Baldwin in a world were all to often people seem to enjoy tearing each other down instead of giving them a lift, you are a class act. Thank you.

Speaking of great theatre - I was so disappointed when the Bay St. e-mailed and said your production had been cancelled. I was excited to see you and Kate Burton in a comedy! I got no explanation from the box office so I hope one day you will get on that stage again since it is so close to me on Long Island!

The revivals of South Pacific and Gypsyhould be reminders to us all that REAL musicals aren't causl entertainment. They have heart, soul and GUTS.

"And somehow you know,
You know even then"

gets right to the heart of life. Likewise

"Goodbye to blueberry pie.
Good ridance to all the socials I had to go to,
all the lodges I had to play,
all the shriners I said hello to.
Hey, L.A., I'm comin' your way!

Some people sit on their butts;
got the dream, yeah, but not the guts.
That's living for some people,
for some hum-drum people I suppose.
Well, they can stay and rot!
But not Rose!"

Bravo, I couldn't agree more! Alec Baldwin is as smart as he is talented! I saw the very first preview of this show last March when Patti LuPone brought the house down...literally!

I saw Patti Lupone in Cole Porter's "Anything Goes" at Lincoln Center and she is truly fantastic. Too bad I'm not in NY I would go see her in Gypsy.

I saw her in Evita when I was at Columbia. I used to got to ALL the shows - that is after i realized that you could got to any play for free if you just hung out and smoked a cig at intermission and walked in cool and calm...

It was good lefty stuff and she was a babe!

Btw, I was also in the College Dems and YPSL and all the good activist groups at Columbia and I never saw Obama at one meeting or outreach. Never.

Personally, Im duisgusted by the campaign he and his Chi pals have run. (Btw I know some of his Chicago minority set aside development buddies - from both his firm and Bill daley's circle and in my opinion - theyre vermin) The idea that they used R%ACE to embarrass and attack and hurt the Clintons was and will always be - unforgivable. (Just because the media refuses to see this - that doesnt change the reality. Ask Sean Wilentz)

Alec - you and I met and had a cocktail down at the Occidental in DC once when both you and I were Clintonites...

I hope youll join me in sitting out this Presidential unless Obama picks Hillary as VP. (I wont work against him - but I WONT help him one bit or dime)

Enjoy your summer, Canada Day , the 4th and your boat (Im on mine right now!)

Had Obama attended one outreach the swift boaters would have reached out and strangled him already. Yes, Obama will be running a robot campaign because it is the only campaign he can run and win. Hillary would have lost, no doubt about it.

One of the strangest political phenomena this year is the wounded Hillary supporter who actually believes that Hillary was "criticized" during the primary. I have never seen anybody treated as delicately as Hillary Clinton was. Can you imaging what would have happened to her had she won the nomination? Paula Jones was waiting along with all the rest, just waiting for the unbelievable dream of a Hillary nominee. Yes, there was a list and wow was it ever long. you didn't see one item on it during the primaries but you would have seen one a day during the general.

are you nuts?

the obama campaign STARTED by having Robt Gibbs telling the press that the Clintons "sold out the Lincoln bedroom" and getting Ge4ffen and Mo Dowd together to announce that the Clintons were both huge LIARS....the first neg ad run this year was Obama saying Hillary would "do or say anything to be President"....and then again - the card that won it all -the Clintons are using racism....

And I dont get how Obama not be part of ANY of the college Dem or political or progressive groups would have led to "swiftboating". In the NYTs article about his Columbia days, Obama said he was involved with the anti apartheid protests - but those who ran that group said they never heard of him....When Hillary was in college - her impact was so great they made her the graduation speaker and she was covered by LIFE magazine. (What was Obama doing with all that free time?
Hmmm?)

Man, you folks are easily suckered...

OBAMA - MAN UP! RELEASE YOUR COLLEGE RECORDS - LETS SEE THEM GRADES AND SAT SCORES. LETS SEE IF PREP SCHOOL BOY GAMED THE SYSTEM AND ONLY GOT IN ON THE BACKS OF THOSE WHO HAD ACTUALLY SUFFERED!

Yes Mr. Baldwin we all love Ms. LuPone, Some of us have actually seen her on Broadway. I was lucky to be one of them. I like Broadway shows, but they are getting expensive. The expense is not the show but the Hotel, dinners, travel, and the emotional expense of being in N.Y.C. which is not the greatest city in the World. It has become a nitemare! Ms. LuPone was also a favorite of my mom. I really think Madona tried in her movie version but Ms. LuPone took it away on stage. Many years ago I use to drink with John Marley in the city. I was introduced to Broadway by John and others in his crew. For those of this audiance who don't know John Marley, he was the Horse Head Producer in the God Father and I worked for Meyer Lansky until his death. I was Paul DiCocco's partner in a few niteclubs in the 70's & 80's. Also Mr. Baldwin, I have watched Red October a few times. I think you could play a good gangster. Maybe I'll do a screen play with you. I will always think highly of Ms. LuPone. Sincerely, bigmikecraft

There are so many good Alec performances. Which to choose... I'd recommend "The Cooler", for starters.

i was watching the Tony awards, and my husband (not a theater fan) was reading. When Ms. LuPone did her number, he sat bolt upright and said, "WHO WAS THAT? HAVE YOU SEEN HER BEFORE? SHE IS AMAZING." He has't reacted that way since he heard the recording of Evita. I had to remind him that that was her too.

Thanks Patti...now maybe I can convince him to actually go to see a musical.

Bravo!

And if you haven't seen South Pacific, the chap that plays Emile was equally deserving of his Tony Award this year too. And I am not even a fan of musicals.
