What Were They Thinking?

What's Your Reaction:

Do you think Steve Jobs might have gotten sick, even in part, because of the intense frustration he feels from having launched one of the greatest product lines in human history, just to fumble the ball on the one yard line by choosing AT&T, the worst wireless service in the US, as his iPhone carrier?

Rumor has it a Verizon iPhone is coming. I wanna cry.

Similarly, Howard Schulz must also feel kind of uncomfortable. I am a dyed-in-the-wool Starbucks customer, but my favorite coffee is served with the worst food selection in America. The baked goods at Starbucks are what my friend and I call "Prison Cake", because we imagine this is what comes on your tray in prison at meal time. The baked goods at Coffee Bean and Tea Leaf are reminiscent of Balthazar by comparison.

What were they thinking?

Maybe he forgot Apple was a big company and listened to former Apple evangelist Guy Kawasaki:
"You should always be selling—not strategizing about selling. Don’t test, test, test—that’s a game for big companies. Don’t worry about being embarrassed. Don’t wait to develop the perfect product or service. Good enough is good enough. There will be plenty of time for refinement later. It’s not how great you start—it’s how great you end up."
Perhaps a little "Can you hear me now" testing ala, Verizon, would have been prudent! But they will likely continue to dominate.
On the Starbucks issue, what idiot thinks paying for internet connections in a coffee shop is a good idea? How many people do they need to watch emigrate to Panera for free WiFi, not to mention tasty treats?

Unfortunately when I moved from New Orleans to Salt Lake City, the call coverage in comparison to others was much greater for AT&T. Within a year the Cingular/AT&T merge happened, resulting in the even ruder service and massive amounts of dropped calls.

On the bright side, I now have rollover minutes!

Verizon NEEDS this iphone, mostly because AT&T needs to lose some customers. If Verizon does indeed carry the iphone in the future, I'll gladly switch.

at&t is horrible with all its dropped called, but it doesn't really bother me since I'm almost never on the phone. Just as long as I can get online enough and play my games, I'm happy. But I'll admit it's people like me who may keep Apple from moving on to a different carrier. I dislike at&t, but my dislike is not as great as my love for my iPhone.
Either Apple needs to open up, at&t needs to improve their network or another phone needs to trump the iPhone. Nice try droid, but I'm still waiting to be wowed.

Iphones, Facebook, Blackberry, Ipods --- I"m such a Luddite that I'm still trying to figure out the ballpoint pen.
I LOVE Starbucks coffee but their baked goods are so-so...although the Iced Lemon Pound cake is pretty good. The scones are a joke. I have yet to see a scone in America that really IS a scone. They are about 3 times too big, hard and tasteless. (WHY is American food so much bigger than in Europe? No wonder Americans are so fat!)
BTW, I recently watched "Glengarry Glen Ross" again. That opening scene is amazing. A pity it's not in the play - it's a brilliant scene for actors.

Coffee on my Keurig is so much better that I don't visit Starbucks much & never for food. Funny observation though!

My son has the iphone & loves it. I agree that the apps were a problem with verizon. He lives in Rochester,NY so it doesn't matter what carrier. I live in Fulton were AT&T works better. I only use a cell to text anyway.

Trying eating a MRE or no food at all.
We need to be greatful we have access to any food at all
it could get worse. Count your American blessings from above.

Alec, you are so right about the gross crap at Starbucks. With one notable exception...the seasonal Cranberry Bliss Bar. I could eat a whole tray for those.

mmmm those are quite yummy.

Thank you so much, Alec! I'm half Italian, half German. Thanks to globalization we have "prison cake" (hilarious!) in Europe, too. It turns my stomach upside down just by looking at it. This may be the "old Europe" and we don't have the ipad yet (although the story of AT&T and Apple sounds more like South than North America). But we have a tradition in making good coffee. So, take your ipad and have a good coffee over here. P.S.: Thanks for 30 rock. You make my day!

I think you need to hang out in a coffee house with music and live poets in Greenwich Village in the afternoon, and then at night dress up in the East side Jazz clubs maybe.

I live in nyc and I love your advice....I go to cornelia st. cafe and bowery poetry club for readings; love, love, love jazz---preferably charlie parker style.

i think apple went with AT&T because they were the only major american carrier that would (give in to their demands) play nice with them. i've had AT&T since '99 and would have switched to verizon a few years ago had it not been for the iPhone. still, i don't find their service to be all that bad and i'm too much of an apple fanboi to ever switch to an android, windows, or blackberry phone.

as for starbucks, their coffee is nothing but bitter, black swill... though i realize some people like their coffee like that. but who in tarnation would go there for their highly overpriced "prison cakes"?

my favorite coffee hub is called Caribou. they're not as ubiquitous as Starbucks but their coffee is so much more palatable than starbucks' rotgut. food is still overpriced though.

anyway that's my two cents in a bucket.

I'm still stuck on the line that you love Starbucks? Gads..will be hard to swallow 30-Rock from here on out.

I love starbucks coffee too: I don't want to but I can't help it.....it just works for me.
