Who Can Beat McCain?

digg Share this on Facebook Huffpost - stumble reddit del.ico.us RSS

Lotta folks on this site hating Hillary because she's a woman. Lotta folks on this site loving Hillary because she's a woman. Makes me think that, in some quarters, men have been uncomfortable with women a lot longer than whites have been uncomfortable with blacks.

Sometimes I honestly believe that a racist white guy would vote for Obama over anyone like his wife or mother. A woman as Commander-and-Chief? Uh-uh, they say.

How sad.

Lotta folks worried about Obama's level of experience. Whatever you do, don't buy into that Republican bullshit. Obama is FDR compared to this Bush. The GOP committed every possible sin in order to get Bush elected. They forged a whole set of new ones to get him reelected. Everyone around the world recognizes that America is in real trouble. Most Americans do, too.

The past eight years have been the moral low point of the American experience.

I have said in these pages before that either candidate has the potential to make a very good president. Clinton is smart and shrewd in ways that will serve her well in office. I think she would play a Democratic Congress like a violin. Obama will have the great fortune of being able to attract his own version of the "Best and the Brightest", an army of brilliant and capable reform-minded people who would normally abjure political careers as the result of their inherent cynicism.

Who can beat McCain? That is all that matters.

McCain is another right-wing, retro, deficit-loving, never-seen-a-defense-appropriation-I-didn't-like tool. But there are a lot of people in this dumbed-down country that will buy that. They want to turn the clock back. To what, I don't know. Which Democrat will give a critical number of Americans the courage to move forward? This election represents a turning point for this country, not only internally, but regarding our future among the other nations of the world. America will begin to, albeit slowly, irreversibly go down if we do not get this right.

It is wrong to assume that either of these Democrats is less qualified than the other. But Democrats must think like Republicans, now more than ever. Who can win?

You think major GOP fundraisers sat back and clucked over the nomination of Bush in 2000? You must be joking. They held their noses and went along for the ride because Republicans like James Baker and that maniac Richard Mellon Scaife have their hands on the money valve and they anointed Bush. The GOP plays to win. They don't have good candidates all that often, but they don't let that stop them. Everyone digs in and puts their shoulder behind even the lamest nominee.

If you want to advocate for Clinton or Obama, do so in the context of how they will defeat McBush.

PS: One possible consequence of an Obama presidency? Supreme Court Justice Hillary Clinton. Dang, that sounds good.

Hillary in the Supreme Court doesn't sound so great to me. The court is already too right leaning and a Hillary appointment would push it over the edge. Personally I'm hoping for more progressive appointments than a DLC conservative.

Mr. Baldwin.I'll give you this ,you know your subject matter. And I wouldn't worry about who can beat McCain. But what puzzles me is this...with all of your knowledge on politics, aren't you worried about not only who the next prez will be,but who in the political world will start telling the american people the truth? What about the North American Union? Most people don't even know about this. And what about Nibiru?I'm no conspiracy theory freak, but it's out there.A friend actually sent me a picture.Whether anyone wants to believe it or not,the fact still remains that it will be visible to just about anyone and everywhere in 15 months. And what about the new world order?Tell me Mr. Baldwin, which candidate is going to be a stand-up human being and tell us the truth about our country? You're a celebrity ,so you probably think you're smarter than the average person, like myself,a waitress. But I am no less intelligent than you are! And I'm telling you this,I don't believe any of the candidates give a flying fig about the working class citizen. You're right,America is in bad shape and everone knows that. But it will NEVER get better until the powers that be quit lying to us! They lie to us and tell themselves it's for our own good.I'll be the judge of what's good for me and my life.

Shouldn't Hillary pass a bar exam before she gets to be a Supreme Court Justice?

Most Supreme Court Justices have not been lawyers. It is SUPOSED to be a political appointment, not a legal appointment.

I'm not sure we want a Justice who has an idea what the meaning of the word "is" is.

Great article...one comment. After all the missteps and bad management of the Clinton campaign, how can you say she would be a good Supreme Court Justice? She has zero integrity...

Alec calls McCain a "tool".
Wonder why the Rupublicans continue to win presidential elections, Alec? That's why.
Your hate-filled tirades are the perfect example of why the undecided's get their backs up and go GOP instead of the Democrats. They'll vote Republican just to spite the comments of people like you.
McCain may be many things but he is not a "tool".

they vote republican because they are too stupid to look out for their own interests.
Don't like the Dems? Vote Green. Anything other than the Nazi party is better than the republicans.

Do you SEE how screwed up the world is right now? That's because the neocons and republican lite Dems have been hell bent on protecting their interests since Reagan was occupying the WH. Unless you're a billionaire, buddy, you're barking up the wrong tree. We are responsible to take care of America and these folks don't care.

No, dems are no perfect. I hate most of the current crop. But vote for another republican and MORE WAR? You gotta be kidding.

And yes McCain,. Romney, Huckabee , Guiliani, Bush and Cheney..ALL TOOLS. Tools of the
neocon right that have proved time and time again - they do not care for America and Americans. Only money and power.

Here's a hypothetical..... or maybe it's real. Time will tell.
McCain is the Republican candidate so he can hold a place for Jeb Bush, who would be unelectable right now, but would happily accept an appointment as Vice President. And where else is there to go after VP? Another Bush president - just what we need.

How will it happen? Very easily. McCain, the tool, becomes President. His running mate,
another tool, agrees to resign early on for health reasons or to spend more time with his family. That leaves a vacancy in the Vice Presidency. McCain will select Jeb Bush to be the VP. The Democrats will howl and moan, but it will go through. When the Republicans don't need McCain any longer, Vice President Jeb Bush will become President. They're tools, and they are happy to be tools. McCain gets to be President-for-a-day. The VP gets compensated nicely. And Jeb Bush becomes "44." It was reported at one time that when the Bush family get together they refer to themselves as "41," "43" and Jeb is "44."

Yes, McCain is a tool.

Alec,

if you start down that path finish it...a lotta women prefer anybody but Hillary because she lied straight up in your face...dare you to prove I didn't lie and damned if she didn't cry on cue in New Hampshire. White racists in this country treated German war prisoners brought over here during the war to be housed... infinitely better black soldiers coming home from fighting against the Germans. So not sure your take on racist white men works in reality. Besides Hillary looks like their mothers, wives, sisters, and aunts.

But being the alpha male that you are...perhaps you can explain why white men in particular hate Hillary's guts? She let Bill walk on any number of bimbo explosions. One would have thought men would have appreciated such largesse on Hillary's part?

The GOP wins because it will cheat no matter what. That is precisely why it wins. If any Americans were made aware that the GOP is out to sell them off to the highest bidder, the GOP would cease to exist immediately.

McCain is most certainly a Tool! Consider his pandering to the religious right. Consider embracing Bush after all the slime tossed his way during the last election. Consider not voting to ban torture.... MY GOD! How is this man NOT a tool? Consider his vote that prioritizes immunity for the telecom industry over the Constitution. Consider his lack of knowledge of Shiite vs. Sunni vs. extremists vs. Al Queda and still standing by his insistence that he's the most qualified candidate based on his knowledge of international issues. Consider his abject ignorance of environmental concerns. Then consider his connection to lobbyists while pretending to be all concerned about corporate influence. Consider his complete lack of critical thinking when it comes to this war... and how he is willing and able to ignore not only it's immorality and illegality but also it's impact on our military and let our men and women march into a quagmire that HE said was not winnable not so long ago. Consider his flip-flop over the immigration issue.... he says something that sounds amazingly lucid, compassionate and sensible about illegal immigration but then immediately reverses that when he gets heat from right-wing wingnuts.

Republicans "continue" to win presidential elections because they STEAL them. If republicans vote just to spite dissension then they are even scarier and ignorant than I thought. But you probably should not speak for all republicans, tkondaks.

So McCain is another Bush-type candidate? Or Reagan-type for that matter? That is a reiterating pattern that makes me wander? Is it the way that the republican party has found in order to avoid the pitfalls of appointing to the presidency an individual, who if it is left on its own devices it might create more trouble than they bargained for?

Have in the presidency somebody pliable, responding to commands, a macho exterior but a limited interior and its performance carefully orchestrated by director's type committees, requiring just an actor to play the part? And what makes the difference is the hypocritical (that is acting) qualities of the incumbent? See Reagan for example and the currently incubated Governor of California Arnold Schwarzenegger?

renoir: McCain may very well BE a tool; it wasn't the point to agree or disagree with that assessment..
If someone is, indeed, a "tool" then SHOW me why, through evidence and reasoned argument exactly WHY he is a tool and then let me come to that conclusion by myself.
To name-call and label the object of your blog, as someone in Baldwin's position did, is uncivil and adds nothing to the political discourse. Take a look at his other blog entries and you'll see that this is a habit of his (his brother, Billy, is even worse. On Bill Maher's old ABC show he once said of Newt Gingrich: "I hate him".)
Sadly -- and, yes, this is VERY relevant -- Baldwin does this even in his personal life as we all know from those released audio tapes.

WOW!! What a fantastic prophecy - Hill for Supreme Court Justice. I cannot stomach the thought of her being the Prez, but a Justice - perfect. Absolutely perfect. There is no better suited person in this nation. Her obvious intelligence could be put to GOOD. She has ability to weigh facts, law and social issues. She's obviously not afraid of power. And she'd be set for life and, thus, would not have to put this country through another painful election (in which she ran). I think this is genius, Alex. Genius! Good for you! Let's everyone pray this all happens!

Hillary and Bill went through the Republican trash machine for the past 18 years!!!! and all they could find wrong was Bill playing hookie with Monica. Can Obama stand the fire of the crap finding Republicans who managed to steal the election from Al Gore who won the popular vote, Kerry a much decorated veteran than this moron Bush? Obama is smart and savvy but he has no clue what he is going to face once he is the candidate. Hillary have faced these guys and came with flying colors. All you thankless folks - Clinton gave this country the best economy we ever had. Hillary is not a great speaker but she is a very hard working Senator and she knows the rope. I am not too sure of Obama's skill at Economics and this country needs to be sure that we select the right candidate - or we will land with another 4 and possibly 8 years of Republican rule.

The Clintons gave us NAFTA, and the effects of that didn't kick in until Bush2 was president. Besides that , they lied about their intentions... they .campaign-promised union members and workers that they would oppose NAFTA , then--even before the inaugural champagne went flat--they went out and rammed it through congress.

They simply can't be trusted.

She hatched her healthcare plan in secret with her cronies, and when big healthcare corporations spend millions lying about it, she didn't even fight back. But she did IMMEDIATELY begin to accept lots of lobbyists' money from these same healthcare corporations.

From the Clintons we got NAFTA, and millions of now uninsured jobless workers. People who are now at an additional competitive disadvantage on the world labor market because everybody else but our workers has government-sponsored health insurance (and potential employers know that anywhere but here they won't be held responsible for sponsoring AND PAYING for healthcare for their workers).

Think about it!

Stop thinking of it as a fight. That's Republican thinking and it doesn't work. He's changing the paradigm.

The other idea is that there won't be very many Republicans left after the election. It's more of a battle with the corporate lobby. Now that's a battle Hillary is willing to wage for the corporations. Look at the record. Look at the money CEOs are making. Look at the demise of the working class. Look at NAFTA. Look at the telecommunications act of '96, signed by Bill Clinton. He gave the store away, man.

Susan1968..yes, the latest story that turned out to not be true...you can put a link to the washington post to try to give hill credence...but, this originated in Meigs County Ohio, just across the Ohio river from me and the sheriff that hill got the story from and the aunt of the dead, dead beat bill payer both said...on the news...that there was more to the story..for instance...the girl had huge unpaid medical bills at the original clinic..and, that is why a $100 prepayment was required...and, she did receive prenatal care at another clinic...her baby's still born death and her subsequent death were due to uncontrolled high blood pressure, which happens to insured women who receive prenatal care as well...hill tried to make it sound like it was a result of being turned away...she received prenatal care and she left more unpaid medical bills behind..the cost of which will be on the backs of the taxpayers in Ohio...

It isn't clear whether or not this woman was insured or not. But if she was a manager at a Pizza Hut, I am sure that insurance would have been available to her at some cost. Not only that, but Hillary tried to put the blame on the hospitals, carefully avoiding blaming big health insurance and HMOs (whose lobbyists give her more money than they give any other candidate). If it weren't for HIllary's emboldening these crooks by screwing up her healthcare initiative and leaving them alone in the driver's seat, we might have fewer deductibles and perhaps insured people wouldn't be running up big unpayable bills.

Obama is the candiate that can win.

In 2004 the voter turn out was up nearly 18%. Yet two thirs of this wen't to Bush. This wa unusal because the Democrats usually get the vote out better than Republicans. It's why Bush won essentialy the same state as 2000 but in 2004 also won the populat vote.

Now with Obama, the young vote is behind him. The Democrats are registering huge numbers of new voters compared to the Republicans. While many see Hillary closer to the middle than Obama, they would go over to McCain. If they turn out. Plus the young vote. The Obama wins.

Experience ? Any good President or politican's bet skill is to surround him/her sel with experienced talent and advice.

Oh PLEASE Alec, many people here don't like Hillary NOT because she's a woman but because of the woman that she is...big difference!

The concept that you (and others) seem to be offering up these days, is that Hillary's opposition exists merely because of her sex is not merely nonsense, but it's insulting as well. I am a woman, a feminist even, and I have not been a fan of Hillary's for at least 6-7 years now and my reasons are varied.

Personally, I would love to have a woman President, but that woman has to have the right sort of temperament and experience for that role. I know I am hardly unique in this view so please stop this nonsense about anyone who is not a Hill fan hates women; it's as ridiculous as the notion that racism is more acceptable than sexism. SHEER NONSENSE!

This is my favorite Obama story the press never mentions. It's how he managed to remove all his primary opponents from the ticket when he first ran for Illinois state senate. That's right -- he made sure his was th eonly name on the ticket. Can you imagine if this was Hillary -- it would be balsted everywhere. No wonder Obama wants her to step down. He;s not used to running against anyone in a primary.Quote:

"The day after New Year's 1996, operatives for Barack Obama filed into a barren hearing room of the Chicago Board of Election Commissioners.

There they began the tedious process of challenging hundreds of signatures on the nominating petitions of state Sen. Alice Palmer, the longtime progressive activist from the city's South Side.

And they kept challenging petitions until every one of Obama's four Democratic primary rivals was forced off the ballot.

... in that initial bid for political office, Obama quickly mastered the bare-knuckle arts of Chicago electoral politics. His overwhelming legal onslaught signaled his impatience to gain office, even if that meant elbowing aside an elder stateswoman like Palmer.

"Why say you're for a new tomorrow, then do old-style Chicago politics to remove legitimate candidates?" Askia said. "He talks about honor and democracy, but what honor is there in getting rid of every other candidate so you can run scot-free? Why not let the people decide?"

This is actually why I think Obama is very electable. He knows how to play Chicago style hardball. That's what it takes to beat Karl Rove. Oh, and you can't say he's never had opposition. He had plenty of primary opposition in his US Senate campaign. It wasn't til after the primaries that he lost his opposition in a sex scandal.

People vote often serving their own self interests. The point come election time, is what biases and powers are in the majority. For now, it looks as if the GOP who run the mainstream media narrative, are boisterously anti-Clinton, as they have been for 4 presidential terms. Obama seems to have become the default candidate for ABC, CBS, NBC, CNN, and MSNBC, and even NPR, beneficiaries of money generated by the military industrial complex, pharmaceuticals, and Wallstreet. It begs the question: what are their self interests?

The dichotomies are getting cast and incorporated into a reductive narrative that misplaces race, gender, age, economic and education levels as motive. And many are jumping on the bandwagon simply because they want to belong to the bandwagon with their name on it. Truth be told, it is really all about money: Who has it, who wants to keep it. These corporations with megaphones are telegraphing and politicking for an Obama landslide.
