Even though Thanksgiving is traditionally a holiday celebrating... Gratitude right? For America? I'm not really sure. However, once again us crazy Americans have let go of the 'true meaning' of a holiday (Valentine's Day is for a very old saint that illegally married people and got his head chopped off!) and now we just eat our thanks and watch sports. No maize for us! Either way, I can still say that what Thanksgiving never fails to make me grateful for is... well, Thanksgiving. I name the best things about the holiday here.

1. Getting To Explain Yourself
1 of 8
Are you single? Why?! What's a nice girl like you doing without a man? I loved your last boyfriend! Oh, you want to be a "insert occupation here that is not lawyer" now? Isn't that adorable, you unmotivated not-anything-like your father couch potato! And what's your credit score? Ah, nothing goes better with turkey then a side of old fashioned familial guilt. Nothing makes me feel more validated about my life, of course, than having to give reason for my failures. I'm sorry did I say failures? I meant everyday decisions about my life, such as getting a cat or a shampoo I might want to use. "Don't use that one, it'll make your hair fall out do you want that?" The day before Thanksgiving, it's best to sit in a corner and think about all the things in your life that you mildly enjoy, write them down, and burn the list. Focus instead on all the things that you are not doing well at and be prepared to talk about them. Pass the gravy, can't we just talk about the surprising and terrible traffic, instead?

The best part of Thanksgiving is snitching that wonderful dark back meat from the turkey when it has come out of the oven.

Gratitude is what I felt when the only cousin younger and smaller than me finally got old enough for the other cousins to lock her in the chicken coop instead of me on Thanksgiving Day. It's the simple things in life... ;o)

My cousins (and my husband's) are GREAT! From when we were little and got to eat at the kids' table in the kitchen, putting olives on our fingers (and sometimes up our noses) and giggling, to three days ago, when we swapped "do-you-remember" stories and embarrassed our cousins' kids, they are always fun.

I- and none of us in our family- go through this every Thanksgiving. Well, maybe the wine.

I have never been asked why I'm still single, or been given a guilt trip such as that.

Some of the day went well; some OK; some was challenging: driving 2 relatives with dementia out to the country for dinner at my cousins and one of them urinated on the leather seats in my new Audi. Guess I should have planned for that event better with some towels to sit on.

I'm very lucky; this year, Thanksgiving was shared only between my mom, dad, boyfriend, and brother. It was the best Thanksgiving I've EVER had.

Pretty funny take on the one day everyone in the US does pretty much the same thing - except for the 10 per cent who dine on the lesser 98% routinely and the 13% who have so little that our economy has ruined.

No, no, it's orange jello with the cream cheese, and lime jello with the cottage cheese and crushed pineapple - at least at our family get-togethers! ;-)
