Dear Dreamer,

I am Alvina Vasquez, born and raised in the United States. I cannot pretend to imagine the strength and courage you and your family have demonstrated in order to live the American Dream. I have a deep respect for you and your community. While culturally we are similar, your experiences make you unique and strong in a way I may never understand.

Congratulations on your hard work in school to make a better life for yourself and your family. In the current political turmoil, I hope this letter brings you hope knowing that we are fighting for you.

The decision of the Dream Act is being made by Americans who have not experienced what you have, and can feel like it shouting from the other room, like parents arguing loudly about us as children. While decisions are being made about your accessibility to the future do not allow the opponents to take your dream away.

The dream of your future was in the adoring glimmer of your Nana's eyes when she wrapped her warm soft hands around your chin.

The dream of your future was in every blister, boil and cut of the Brazeros who built our lands.

The dream of your future was in every wave that carried ships of immigrants to this young country.

The Dream Act awards high performing students a path to citizenship. In Colorado we are fighting hard for a similar law that will bring your dreams closer, that will offer opportunities and celebrate you as a professional. The ASSET bill does not address citizenship, but will award hard work and good grades with lower tuition costs to undocumented students who have grown up in our community.

The ASSET bill continues to march through the Colorado Legislature with the pride and diligence of those it represents. Its next step is in the House Finance Committee. One day it will pass and it will be remembered as the day we gave millions the opportunity to achieve the American dream. I encourage all Americans to follow the momentum of this law and the youth that it is empowering, for they are keepers of our future.

Thank you, Dreamer, for without your passion for a prosperous future in these times of entitlement and greed, the obstacles of our ancestors, grandparents and parents might be forgotten. In their name and in your name, we will continue to fight this battle and bring you accessibility to the future we all strive for.

Con Mucho Cariño,
Alvina Vasquez
