Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs
Incredibly stunning to say the least, yet even on reasonably practical reflection, we may be witnessing another Dan Quayle selection moment in American politics. First termer and former beauty queen Gov. Sarah Palin! Was she that fully vetted? Can't wait to read all of her speeches in support of those Bush administration policies McCain claims to have walked away from.
So this is John McCain's bait to dissatisfied Hillary supporters? Sen. Obama was correct... John McCain just doesn't get it. He actually believes Rush Limbaugh who had to have collectively brainwashed the McCain operation that placing a neophyte female Alaskan governor on the ticket would convert the "over 50" Democratic moms to the GOP fold.
To think that McCain turned down far more nationally qualified individuals who have now been relegated to subordinate status in the pecking order of GOP politics:
1. Mitt Romney
2. Tim Pawlenty
3. Tom Ridge
4. Lindsey Graham
5. Charlie Crist
6. Joe Lieberman
7. Carly Fiorina
How must they feel? Dwarfed at the altar by a total unknown. Each rejected candidate now having to gamely march out before the national media to defend this singular act of a political Hail Mary pass. To steal an old adage of former Secretary of State James Baker... putting Sarah Palin into a debate with Joe Biden is going to be like throwing Howdy Doody into a knife fight!
Not to denigrate Gov. Palin the person -- she has a beguiling bio and has strong conservative, western credentials. She did not make any fatal error at her national political debut. After all she did get elected governor of a state. By definition she may be your typical "hockey mom." She may be all McCain claims she is in his introduction of her, but this is the person McCain will entrust to be a heartbeat away from the presidency? To be a commander-in-chief when the nation is fighting two wars???
Give McCain his due and applaud with one hand his audaciousness. Self-indulgence has long been McCain's dark underbelly. McCain's 72nd birthday present to himself... leaping without a parachute into the poltical unknown. It may turn out to be a game-changer. A potentially clever roll of the dice in a high-risk/high-reward to reach out to women and independents. But it appears more rash than rational.
If the McCain campaign was hoping to make the issue of experience a determining factor... it just took that issue completely off the table. McCain's campaign had to have recently concluded that the "experience" argument against Obama was not getting them anywhere, so now McCain is trying to steal away the "change" argument by redefining the race going into the GOP convention. Good luck!
Pure as the driven Alaskan snow... welcome Gov. Palin to the intense limelight of the national stage and the collective sounds of shocked gulps from your own party.

REGARDING MCCAIN’S CHOICE OF SARAH PALIN AS RUNNING MATE
I am all for women's right and full eqaulity demonstrated by choosing women for the highest offices in the land. But in Sarah Palin’s case, where is the "experience" McCain has been shouting about with respect to Obama? This chioce has opportunism and hypocrisy written in BOLD LEETERS all over it! McCain acts, as usual (see his abandonment of Maverick image and embrace of Karl Rove), not on principle but expediency. Democrats must remember that this woman is not a progressive, but will work to dismantle (especially through Supreme Court appointments) every right of women that really counts in the new century. McCain again has failed to make a prudent choice—clearly proving that he is not going to be a wise President. Women of America must take note and declare that this is not the kind of woman they have been waiting for to make history as a potential President.
I think Joe needs to bash McCain every chance he gets but he should be very kind and gentle with Palin in the debates, paternal in fact.
Of course, if it turns out that there's more to her then beauty queen titles....

You see why women have a hard time trying to play with the big guys. Your statement sums it up. Why does Joe have to go easy with the woman? If women want equal rights, they have to expect equal treatment. Joe should go after Palin like he would any VP rival.

Your comment offends me as a woman who held elected office for almost a dozen years. I don't think anyone has to be kind and gentle to a female opponent. Trust me, we welcome being hit hard because as women, we always have to prove ourselves a bit more than any male on the ticket. (though I seriously doubt this particular woman has had to withstand that kind of vetting in her career to date)
Biden must treat her as he would any rival... to do anything less than that is sexist in the extreme

I don’t think the McCain campaign ever had a chance of winning based on policy, so distraction and division were really all that was left.
Personally, I believe what I saw at the convention and disharmony wasn't part of any of it.

Can someone explain what is her experience in foreign affairs? At least Obama has traveled to foreign countries and served on the foreign relations committee. What does she know about the lower 48 states? Obama has been in every state. He has talked to people and knows their problems. What states beside Alaska does she bring to McCain's campaign? Obama selected Biden a Senator who is experienced in foreign affairs and all phases of government. Obama and Biden are t wo smart capable people who will do a good job. It looks to me like once again the Republicans have chosen a one issue candidate. They'll try to make her seem like Hillary but she's no Hillary.
Palin has more executive experience in government than both Biden and Obama combined.

i beg to differ --- after the absolutely 'magical' primary campaign and convention - basically now 18 months - Prez Obama show magnanimous executive experience - he is the CEO of his campaign! and he surely shows he knows how to surround himself with remarkable capable people; listen to them and decisively enact a historical presidential campaign - He is the CEO of his campaign, don't forget that - it's execution belongs to him!!! word...

Here in Washington state we had a crazy lady named Ellen Craswell get the nomination for governor. Like Palin she was a turkey necked fundamentalist who believed government should operate on biblical principles. She lost big time, and the party knew she was a loser from the start. This is proof the party isn't serious about McCain and is hoping Obama will screw up so Romney can run in 2012 against Hillary.
YOu know, my first thought was that maybe they HAD given up. But remember that the Rovians never give up. They hate this country and just want to make it their little oiigarchy kingdom.
Besides, I don't trust the Amercan electorate anymore after 2004. I still can't get over Duhhbya winning that one.
