Gun-Free Homes and Communities

Posted: 12/18/2012 10:50 am

We should not wait for our elected officials, in President Obama's good words, "to come together and take meaningful action to prevent more tragedies like this, regardless of the politics." We should do our share. One way to proceed is to mark our homes, apartments and condos, with a "gun free" sign. Parents should notify their friends that they would be reluctant to send their child over for a play date unless the home was safe from guns. Residential communities should pass rules that ban bringing guns onto their premises, clearly marking them as gun free.

Anyone who puts up such signs will become an ambassador for gun control, because they are sure to be challenged by gun advocates to explain their anti-gun positions. Here are some pointers they may wish to use against the typical pro-gun talking points.

"Guns don't kill people, people kill people."

• Tragically, it is the case that there will always be dangerous individuals, but they can kill a lot more with easy access to guns. On the same day as the massacre in Newtown, Connecticut, a knife-wielding man targeted a primary school in a Chinese village. Twenty-two children and one adult were wounded, but none were killed.

"Guns deter crimes and save lives."

• Of the 30,000 gun deaths in America every year, only 200 are caused by self-defense. Studies have shown that a higher rate of gun ownership is correlated with higher rates of homicide, suicide and unintentional shootings. The U.S. has a firearms homicide rate 19.5 times higher than the combined rate of 22 high income countries with similar non-lethal crime and violence rates.

"Criminals would obtain guns anyway."

• Weak gun laws that exempt many private companies and gun shows from background checks already enable a thriving criminal market for guns. According to the Brady Campaign, "In most states convicted felons, domestic violence abusers, and those who are dangerously mentally ill can walk into any gun show, flea market, or even log on to the Internet and buy weapons from unlicensed sellers, no questions asked." True, dangerous people may still be able get their hands on weapons if tighter gun control laws are passed, but certainly less will do so when it is illegal.

"The right to private gun ownership is guaranteed by the Constitution."

• No right is absolute. Even the right to free speech, considered the strongest of them all, is limited. You cannot shout "fire" in a crowded theater -- precisely because it endangers life. You can't always make a speech with a loudspeaker at 2 a.m. in a residential area. We can limit gun ownership to people who have neither criminal nor mental health records and ban assault rifles for starters. Meanwhile, make our children safer by not allowing them to go to places that are not gun free.

Assault rifles... military grade weapons with full auto and/or burst fire... are already banned, and have been regulated to the point where they might as well be banned since 1934.

The assault weapon ban bans long rifles, that happen to look like military weapons. It's a cosmetic difference between an ar-15, and another semi auto magazine fed rifle.

Mexico banned guns. How is that working out?

Wow. Why don't you just shout on the rooftops, "Hey you burglars out there! I'm unarmed! Come rob me!"

You all seriously need to think about things all the way before you act.

"Of the 30,000 gun deaths in America every year, only 200 are caused by self-defense."

Lying by ommission , "Professor"? One need not kill in order to have a succesful defense. With your kind of logical failures, your "credentials" should be revoked.

At first, I thought this was some kind of "a modest proposal," but apparently not.

When Dr. Etizioni cites the "only 200 deaths from self defense" figure he completely ignores the large number of would-be murderers, rapists, and robbers that were merely injured or deterred through the use of armed resistance to their violence.

To those of you who think banning guns is the answer, consider that prohibition was a failure, the war on drugs has not resulted in less drug crime, etc.

The whole argument about gun shows? I attend gun shows and have purchased there. You cannot buy a weapon from a dealer at a gun show without filling out federal forms.

The sad reality is that most of the arguments against the second amendment boil down to, "guns are scary and since I cannot imagine myself ever wanting one, then I don't want anyone else to have one either."

I would explain a bit more academic honesty from the good professor.... "stricter laws guarantee less weapons in criminal hands" - seriously? Take a trip to Mexico, they totally ban guns. "higher guns ownership correlated to more homicides" - duh, Sherlock. If one lives in a dangerous neighborhood and acquires a gun to protect himself, is it the gun which created the neighborhood? All these fallacies are so well studies in formal logic, that it makes me think that the good professor is either ignorant and not qualified to teach, or deliberately bends facts and makes (scientifically) dishonest statement to fit his pre-conceived agenda.

I'd say this was humorous but its just down right stupid. His data is surreal. Its excludes millions of pieces of data. As well, almost every mass killing is done in a place where the shooter knows it is "gun free". Nobody goes to a gun show to commit mass murder. And don't tell me Fort Hood had lots of guns, in fact, this is a training facility where no guns where worn by the trainees.

This is hilarious. Yes, post this sign on your front door, by all means. My house is protected by a state-of-the-art security system known as the Mossberg 500, but I'm sure your sign will deter rather than invite, criminal elements. Thanks for the laugh!

Actually Mr. Amitai Etzioni's idea about putting up signs is great. Neighborhoods that are NOT "Gun Free Zones" would see a huge drop in burglaries and home invasions would cease. All this criminal activity would totally move to the Gun free zones. Housing prices in armed zones would appreciate as well.

And in fact, that's what happened--shooters love schools that are gun free zones by law.

I'll support gun prohibition as a viable strategy as soon as the government rids the streets of illegal drugs.

Dr. Etzioni: The theater in Aurora Colorado was declared to be a "gun free" zone. Did that sign stop a mass killing? Sir, you have to take off your rose colored glasses and accept the horrible (to you) notion that "criminals don't care about YOUR laws"
10:41 AM on 12/28/2012
It was the ONLY theater there declared a gun free zone. Wonder if the shooter knew that? What do you bet?
10:00 AM on 12/28/2012
Please feel free to put a "gun free" sign on your home. I'll put a "this homeowner has a firearm and is willing to use it on intruders" on mine. Guess which house is more likely to get robbed??

Oh and the author used "facts" that have been disproven time and time again.
01:48 AM on 12/29/2012
I'll put up a sign that says: 'WARNING: My dog has a gun and refuses to take his meds."
08:59 AM on 12/28/2012
To me, it's a simple matter of freedom. I want my guns for my reasons and I don't care what you think. Butt out and when you say "we" don't include me.
It's people like you that would make a good North Korean citizen.

We can limit gun ownership to people who have neither criminal nor mental health records and ban assault rifles for starters. Meanwhile, make our children safer by not allowing them to go to places that are not gun free. it is interesting you use the Constitution as the reason we have a right to keep and bear arms and then say we have the right to limit them to people who have neither criminal nor mental health records. Funny I don't see that qualification in the 2nd Amendment and in fact it states outright "Shall not be infringed" without qualification. If a wo/man is not in a cage for a crime and has paid their debt to society who are you or anyone else for that matter to steal a right that Shall not be infringed. I love people who talk out both sides of their mouths they are so easy to invalidate with facts. Read the words of the 2nd Amendment and show me where it says any infringement is allowed, can't? I didn't believe so. Either you support the Constitution as written and meant or you aren't an American. So which is it?
