Deliver Us From Evil: A Letter to the Catholic Church

Posted: 04/26/10 10:22 AM ET

Dear Pope Benedict, Archbishop Mahony and all other members of the hierarchy of the Roman Catholic Church,

Last Wednesday, a Dutch television station broadcast Deliver Us From Evil, my 2006 documentary about the sex abuse scandal in the Catholic Church. A few days earlier, the subject of my film, notorious pedophile Oliver O'Grady, was contacted by Dutch police officers, tipped off by his neighbors who had seen an advertisement for the film. Over the course of his 30-year career as a Catholic priest in California, O'Grady abused hundreds of children and is now living on the lam in Europe. O'Grady quickly disguised himself and fled, taking a train from Rotterdam to Schtipol. He managed to catch the last plane out of Amsterdam on Aer Lingus at 20:45. Ironically, had the film aired a few days later, he likely would have been stuck in Holland due to the volcanic eruption the following day.

As you might imagine, after the film aired in Holland, residents of O'Grady's community in Rotterdam were outraged and contacted me and two of the advocates featured in the film, attorneys John Manly and Jeff Anderson. After I spoke to one Rotterdam family, I discovered to my dismay that O'Grady had been masquerading himself as "Brother Francis" and had been volunteering at their local parish. This is alarming on several levels, especially in light of the Church's recent commitment to screen all volunteers and laypeople working in the church in order to protect the children and the community. Needless to say, the community was terrified and is still in a state of panic and shock. Another family told me they had been very close friends with O'Grady and had even traveled with him along with their nine-month-old child.

John Manly and I then called the Irish Guarda, an investigatory unit in Ireland who confirmed that O'Grady was on a "watch list," which means he is a person they know about but is not monitored. They do not follow him or make him register on a regular basis, or take any measures to make sure he is not around children. They do nothing to protect the communities where he lives or visits. Whether or not they reported his history to the police in Rotterdam, or even knew he was living in Holland, is questionable at best. Whatever arrangements were made between the Church and the Guarda are similarly suspect. O'Grady was deported in 2003 from the US after serving several years in prison. Had he been kept here, at least he would have been on a sex offender registry so people would know to avoid him.

So since it seemed like nothing was going to be done, I called my two good friends in Dublin: Noel Donnellon and Daniel Holfeld. They are both respected artists and filmmakers in Ireland. Within two days (after a visiting his old haunts) they provided me with six photos of a bearded Oliver walking freely without a care in the world. He was perusing book stores, cafés, and living the life of Riley. For proof of his whereabouts, please see the photos below.

Pope Benedict and Cardinal Mahony, you should thank my friends and be ashamed of yourselves! As spiritual leaders you both knew what was happening, yet you continued to authorize him being moved from parish to parish while he committed unconscionable crime after crime. Why did you keep moving him around? Was it because your careers were blossoming and sick criminals like O'Grady could have discredited you for breaking the law and harboring a pedophile? Perhaps I shouldn't refer to this behavior in the past tense, as it appears that cover-ups like this are still actively going on. I find it interesting that you both have attained positions of great power within the church while you share a history of hiding information so crucial to the safety of children and their communities.

I ask you, Pope Benedict, how can a self-confessed, convicted pedophile continue to work with children in the church? I beg you to look at the full history of this man (it is detailed in my film) and take him away from places where he can harm even more children. I know you are already somewhat familiar with his story and his record, as you presided over the Congregation For the Doctrine of the Faith for 25 years. That organization, designed to oversee morality in the church, was the group that was supposed to review police reports, parental pleas, and other legal documents pertaining to all accusations of sexual abuse. Despite the fact that O'Grady first confessed to abusing a child in the 1970's, he wasn't convicted until 1986. You chose to look the other way. The Church didn't even laicize him until almost 30 years later! You probably wish now that you had done something back then. Maybe if you took action as these cases were coming in, you could have cleaned the entire church up and become a hero for uncovering (as opposed to covering up) these incidents.

Those bad choices from the past 30 years are really starting to backfire. Today, even your loyal followers are starting to believe what victims and their advocates have been screaming about for decades. The lies, deceit and cover-up have caused a systemic breakdown. And I was really surprised a couple weeks ago as I listened to Cardinal Tarcisio Bertone, the Vatican's Secretary of State, say that it was a homosexual issue. We all know that there are no known studies linking pedophilia to homosexuality.

The good news? There is something you can do. Oliver O'Grady is set to turn 65 on June 5 of this year. He is due to receive a hefty annuity in exchange for his settlement in court. Why don't you take that money and give it to his victims or to a social program unrelated to the Church to counsel victims that are desperately in need of help? And you can put him away in a place where won't be able to harm children anymore. That is the challenge I put forth to you today.

And then, I hate to say it, but Pope Benedict, you should step down and face the charges in front of you. You have had a really good run, power-wise, but institutional power corrupts. Look at what happened to Ken Lay and Bernie Madoff.

Archbishop Mahony, your fate is another story. You really should be locked up behind bars. The only reason you are not incarcerated is because the justice department and district attorneys here in Los Angeles have been protecting you for years. How can you walk free after breaking laws, harboring pedophiles, and paying victims off in excess of $700 million--the largest settlement in history? Not to mention bribing people behind closed doors. Not only were you breaking the law, but isn't that stealing from your own parishioners?

It seems that the Church has begun to speak publicly and acknowledge the problem. I hope you both do the right thing, take negligent and corrupt priests and Church officials--including yourselves--out of power, hold them accountable for both their actions and inactions, and face the charges in front of you.

The Catholic Church has been involved in more sex abuse scandals than any other religion. The Catholic Church has also covered up much more than sexual abuse over the years; this is the only religion, set up like a country with ambassadors and diplomats. They hide behind diplomatic immunity, shelter ordained pedophiles, yet people continue sending their children to them. Supporting this organization financially is a mistake. A message needs to be sent that this kind of behavior will not be tolerated and the best way to send a message is for people to stop donating to anything Catholic. I was raised Catholic, went to Catholic School and have had many Priest that were friends. Throughout history the Catholic Church were involved in murder and other crimes against anyone who was a threat to them. Including the knight’s templar’s. They call the Pope the vicker of Christ, what do you think Christ would have to say about all of the things this corrupt organization has done in his name if he were here?

Thanks for posting the story. I am in Modesto. There are a few good links on the Irish Sunday Times with more details of O'Grady's activities in Netherlands. http://www.tribune.ie/article/2010/apr/25/long-career-of-the-hannibal-lecter-of-the-clerical/

I wish O'Grady was the only pedophile priest who had come to Modesto. We have had more since. The diocese of Stockton still isn't protecting its own members. They had to pay out $30 million to just 2 of O'Grady's victims.

Thank you, again, Amy. After watching your movie when it first came out, I was horrified not only at the remorseless O'Grady, but at the cold-hearted Mahony and the unwillingness of the Vatican to meet with you. They have just proven that nothing has changed in the Catholic church when it comes to protecting the sexual abuser and not the victims. Who knows how many more innocent children and vulnerable adults this monster has molested. But, does the Catholic church care? Surely not. All that is important to them is keeping their names clear. O'Grady is just one example of the horror the Catholic church's hierarchy has covered up and transferred for years. He molested hundreds of people. I hope that the Vatican and Mahony realize that they will someday have to meet their Maker, and although God is a merciful God; God is also just.

Thank you Amy for writing this and for Deliver Us From Evil. O'Grady hid out in my town in 2007 and then he vanished ... he was living only yards from my son's school and was within a 5 minute walk of 5 schools and the Guards weren't even monitoring him.

Amy, Thanks for your efforts to expose and hold accountable O'Grady and Mahoney. I know a big part of the movie was to show how dangerous and a continuing threat to children O'Grady was, and I am heartbroken to see how right you were. I attended a convention where you spoke about the making of the documentary and remember how affected you were because of interviewing that monster. My first thoughts when hearing about O'Grady roaming freely again were for Nancy Sloan, Ann Joyno and Adam. Despite their courageous efforts, to find out so many other children are still at risk is outrageous. I'm glad "Deliver Us From Evil" is playing in Europe and O'Grady's whereabouts were discovered. Are there any deals to show your movie in the US. It is just as relevant today.
ps If the title had been "An Inconvenient Truth" you would have won the Academy Award!

It's clear that the Pope will never do the right thing and resign. Therefore, he should be arrested and prosecuted. The Pope, Mahoney, and all other church officials involved in these heinous crimes against children are not above the law. We must demand justice!

Seriously, it's time.

Even if he did resign, it would not absolve him of criminal responsibility.

Amy, firstly many congratulations and thanks for your excellent documentary, which was screened recently in Ireland. You don't say where in my country these photos were taken? Please let us know?

Obviously our Catholic Church has miles to go before our children are truly protected from these horrendous pedophiles now and in the future. Unfortunately we cannot undo the past, but not knowing this issue and reading this story, the Church did nothing to stop this creep when they should have! I cannot wait to see Amy's documentary now and learn the entire story! The church may not have control over O'Grady now, and I don't think they have control over any annuity he may have either, but this should be a lesson to them that they need to ACT IMMEDIATELY on complaints, allegations, etc when it comes to pediophiles and sexual abuse. THERE SHOULD NOT BE ANYMORE HIDDING, COVERUPS, etc! This is 2010, and these issues should be transparent for the public! If the church shows they ARE ACTING IMMEDIATELY, maybe they can begin to untarnish their past actions!

This seems like a failure of the Irish Gaurda more than anything at this point. If they were "watching" him, they should have been alarmed that he left Ireland in the first place, not to mention following up on his whereabouts.
11:12 PM on 04/26/2010
Incredibly disheartening to see how many still don’t see the real issue! It’s not about the fact that there may or may not be “errors†in the article! Get real people! The issue is all the innocent children and vulnerable adults who have been hurt by this man or have been put in harms way due to the churches ridiculous, continuous, out right refusal to do the right thing! ASSumming they didn’t actually KNOW Oliver O’Grady’s past, it would NOT have been difficult at all to find out his history if they’d only opened their eyes however sadly this didn’t happen (if we are to believe they didn‘t know)! It sickens me to think how many more individuals O’Grady’s likely harmed, not only how many he’s personally touched but the thousands of lives that’ll be affected by the damage he’s likely done to so many more. My heart goes out to all the victims of O’Grady as the revictimization they are likely feeling is nothing most could ever even begin to comprehend. As a survivor of clergy abuse all I can say is my heart is with the victims and I truly hope they all have individual support systems they can turn to.

When individuals and the church as a whole start caring more about the victims and protecting the innocent and vulnerable than protecting their reputation our children will be safer. It’s not until then we will see that real change has began.

Thank you Amy and others for continuing to reveal the truth of horrors of O'Grady. Disturbing to say the least is it appears the leaders who should have taken care of this monster years ago, have done nothing to protect the children of the past or the future.
To those of you posting there might have been errors in the article etc, do you realize O'Grady is an admitted pedophile, I don't care if there were 100 mistakes, this man needed to have been stopped. He now is roaming free, free to be a criminal and ruin the lives of children again and again.
Do you have any idea how retraumatizing this must be to the victims who already tried to stop this monster? They and those mentioned in Amy's article have done more than any leader in the Catholic Church. pathetic just pathetic criminal just criminal

Amy Bravo, Bravo, Bravo... Brilliantly stated and right on target. Interesting that you so rightfully accuse the district attorney and Justice Department as being an integral part of the conspiracy and cover ups. I would pretty well bet that they are "devoted" roman catholics who chose this corrupt way to display their faith. How the DA has been so complicit in the cover up is so obvious and I would call for an investigation of the DAs roll in this matter. Being an accessory to the fact is a crime and the DA should be charged with failure to do his job as should the Justice Department.

The local bishop was Archbishop Mahony, not such a local issue as he became the Cardinal after he knew Oliver was abusing. He walked away, took his promotion instead of protecting the next set of victims.

It is my understanding that the CDF was responsible for this until 2002 when it shifted to USCCB.
and set up the NRB. (another bearded attempt to look like they were doing something about the issue). Frank Keating, former Governor of OK resigned from this board as he quickly saw the secrets were so deep and the bishops didn't want to confront it.

This became obvious more recently; we know there are known pedophiles in ministry today and have been all along.

RE: Catholic Church responsibility. If they took on the job of screening all lay people and volunteers as they said they would in 2003, how could a convicted pedophile with known record work with kids at a church?

Re: secular authorities handling it. The church uses secular authorities when its convenient. Maybe they should have given the power to secular authorities when initial reports were filed. Now that they have ruined hundreds of thousands of people's lives they suddenly rely on secular forces? Seems that now they have more responsibility than ever to take action.

Re: laicization. Yes but he is getting a huge annuity check from the church next month. Suspect?

When you start defending the victims instead of protecting the church, you will prove there is a willingness to evolve.
08:17 PM on 04/26/2010
Your understanding is incorrect. The CDF "reserved" all cases of sexual abuse to itself only in 2002, via the motu proprio SACRAMENTORUM SANCTITATIS TUTELA. (Sorry for the caps, I copied and pasted the name to get it right). This meant that no cases were supposed to be handled locally. This of course only applies to the canonical procedures involved. It is presumed that secular authorities will handle the application of civil law to the case.

The USCCB does have board which established norms for the US, but they don't actually prosecute the ecclesiastical trials themselves. US norms state that all volunteers have a background checks. I don't know what European norms are, those would be handled by each diocese or region.r

I don't like defending the Church. I hate it. That's why I hate all the nonsense accusations going around now. They are detracting from the real and terrible incidents and the real purging that needs to go on. These demonstrably false accusations allow the bishops to talk about an "attack from outside," instead of forcing them to examine themselves. There needs to be real and deep discussion, but it needs to get the facts right.
06:51 PM on 04/26/2010
There is a serious error in this article. The Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith was NOT "supposed to review police reports, parental pleas, and other legal documents pertaining to all accusations of sexual abuse" during the time that O'Grady was an acting priest. The policy that the CDF be responsible for all ecclesiastical trials relating to sexual abuse was only put into place in 2002. The responsibility for acting before this was in the hands of the local bishop, who obviously erred grievously.

I also fail to understand how the Church can "put him away in a place where won't be able to harm children anymore" when he has been laicized, and the Church now has authority over his whereabouts or actions. It is now up to secular authorities to handle it.
07:43 PM on 04/26/2010
I meant "has no authority." The missing word makes quite a difference.
07:38 AM on 04/27/2010
It seems more like a failure of the Irish Gaurda to monitor and contain him, as I stated above.
06:36 PM on 04/26/2010
It is disheartening to hear Oliver O'Grady remains a free man but not shocking. Nothing to me in this "scandal" is shocking to me anymore. The Holy See and Pope Benedict are continually stating that they are doing everything in their power to keep these pedophiles away from children. Every time a camera is turned on them--and they aren't blaming the victims or some other group--they are serving up platitudes and empty promises. But time and time again we come to find out that the Pope and the College of Cardinals are doing the exact opposite. If this were any other business, these individuals --Priests, Cardinals, the Pope Himself--would be accessories after the fact and prosecuted as such. Only in the Catholic church can one get away with harboring a criminal.

I commend Ms. Berg and Mr. Manly for their actions. Someone has to look out for the children since the church obviously doesn't care.
