I admit it. He almost had me for a minute. When he said, "We have to break our addiction to oil," my little heart skipped a beat. I thought, maybe he really does get it. Maybe he really has done the research. Maybe he has had a change of heart. And, then, I remembered. This is the guy who wants to drill the Alaska Wildlife Refuge. This is the guy who won't sign the Kyoto Agreement. This is the guy who invaded Iraq. This is the guy who doesn't believe in global warming (and it certainly didn't have anything to do with Katrina). And, then, I also remembered that no-bid contracts were given to Halliburton, that Donald Rumsfeld owns the patent on tamiflu (which, by the way, may not be effective against avian flu, at all), that Jack Abramoff went to Beverly High. (I don't know why that's relevant but it is.)
As to the global warming thing, I don't understand the denial. All the intelligence points to the harsh reality of global warming and our President should, at least, know what happens when you ignore the intelligence...
But, for one minute, he almost had me. And I realized how badly I want to be reassured: that global warming hasn't reached a tipping point from which there is no return, that there is a way out of Iraq without leaving total chaos and anger and destruction in our wake, that on some level, I just want to be patted on the head and tucked in and told that it's all okay, that our borders are safe, that our men and women overseas are fighting for a good cause, and that our children have a future. And, then, I remembered.
