If I Were Running for Vice-President

digg Share this on Facebook Huffpost - stumble reddit del.ico.us RSS

If I were running for Vice-President, what would I wear? In light of Sarah Palin's recent clothing expenditures ($150,000 and counting), it occurred to me to wonder if I were running for Vice-President, what would I wear? I'm a Brentwood Mom. Jeans? Sweats? No, probably not.

But Sarah Palin's put herself out there as a one-woman beauty pageant. I've never seen her wear the same thing twice. By the way, there's nothing wrong with wearing the same thing twice. Same jacket, different skirt, same jacket, different top. By the way, t-shirts look perfectly fine under a fancy jacket. Could someone teach this girl to accessorize? Newsflash: no one ever sees your feet, mostly you're standing behind a podium. Fashion tip: cranberry goes with almost everything. One pair of cranberry heels, one pair of black heels, one pair of beige heels, a couple of pairs of boots, on a particularly long day, wear flats. Capezios makes a perfectly reasonable pair of flats - you could probably afford them in three colors. Oh, I forgot you have an endless clothes budget! Don't try to defend yourself by saying you only have one pair of glasses.

Confession: I shop at Saks. In fact, I love Saks. But I usually shop at Saks "on sale." There's always something 'for sale' at Saks. In fact, this week, every retail store in America has something on sale!

Yeah, I know, you said you're going to donate them all to charity when you're done. (Sort of the way you put that plane up for sale on E-Bay?) But I have a question. Who's going to get the tax deduction?

If I were running for Vice-President, what would I wear? In light of Sarah Palin's recent clothing expenditures ($150,000 and counting), it occurred to me to wonder if I were running for Vice-Preside...

I think I've seen her wear the same things many times--black pants or black skirt or black dress with a nice jacket.

It is a look she could have easily gotten--including some good-looking accessories-- for $20,000 (still a lot).

That the Republicans think nothing of wasting $150,000 of their donors' money so unnecessarily. That pretty much sums up for me how they'll regard my tax money--and why McCain wants to keep the Bush tax cuts for the rich, get rid of capital gains tax, and give huge paybacks to Exxon Mobil.

McCain-Palin will NOT be in the interest of the 95% of us who earn less than $250,000. That's the -real- meaning of Palin's Republican shopping spree

Sarah Palin should have spent some money on a library book titled, "What the Constitution Says a VP Does". It would have done her well.

You know, the way you carry yourself makes clothes look better.

Case in point? Michelle Obama. A $100 dress from a mainstream store got more raves when she went on the show, "The View". Copies of the black and white dress flew off the shelves.

I don't hear the same stories about the clothes Sarah Palin has now.

Not a good use of $150,000 +......

Donate to charity? How does that work? obvious 168,000 homeless families won't fair too well on even a few hundred upscale outfits. An auction perhaps? Are there people out there willing to put up cash for Palin's sweaty rags, and if so will they go for huge markups, like say Cher's houses, or would they take a huge loss? Somehow I'm not seeing the logic here. Help me out here Sarah. Explain it to me like a third grader.

You kiddin'? Plenty of aspiring 'Hawkey Moms' out there to either bid on or buy outright Palin's wardrobe at charity. Whether we like it or not, she's very popular with the base, a demographic that also includes women of means (as well as trailer trash).

I hope Palin snagged some nice new bras and undies. Maybe some La Perla, Chantelle or that kick-butt Stella McCartney stuff.

Too bad McCain-Palin was running on a platform of mavericky-ness. If they had wanted to present more of a conservatie, calm effect she could have made due with a few simple black suits.

My wife and I shop at Ross', not because we like their stuff, but because it's basically all we can afford. We'd much prefer to patronize local businesses, but thanks to Republicanism, the days of mom and pop stores are long gone.

We are the real "Joe the Plumber", and McCain and the Republicans are not our *friends.*

Does this make us *anti-American*?

Actually, I used to have a big problem with Walmart's pricing policies and refused to shop there or Sam's for the longest time. But I have found some new respect for them with their $4 generic prescription plan. I think that has done more for the US than any senator, representative or president has done in a long while.

(and p.s. since palin was shopping in high-end stores, I referenced those brands which i would love to be able to afford. as it is...i typically shop at old navy sale racks about once a year. i don't know how you tied my joke to calling anyone anti-american. if you're just venting, that's cool)

And a more likable personality -- better liked by voters of both stripes. Positioning Palin as the primary attack dog against Obama-Biden was a huge mistake. The strategy quickly tarnished her 'girl next door makes good' image with many votes, even Repubs.

One consistent trait referenced even by her enemies in Alaska is cordiality, charm even. Palin was almost always cordial in public, very charming -- so much so that one found oneself disarmed.

A tough but compassionate demeanor is a far more effective suit for a female VP nominee than Armani.

The flashy clothes are really so you will have something to look at there...she is hoping too you won't notice that there really isn't much of anything else there, also.

p.s. also.

Sarah is no Jackie Kennedy!
She's just a flashy Hockey mom...and a liar, and a crooked, run-of-the-mill GOP politician.

Please. Let's not compare this humble Joe six pack hockey mom to some elitist liberal Democrat.

She could have spent a whole lot less and looked just fine!
These expenses were more than the value of many homes, that were foreclosed!

Absolutely. She could have done well on 1/10 of that amount, with normal professional clothes from lines like Jones New York, Oscar de la Renta, etc. I mean, $2500 for a Valentino jacket? It didn't even look like it was worth $250. The Louis Vuitton handbag that Piper carried was over the top. The makeup costs, I can understand. But the clothing is outrageous.

Maybe she should have been studying the constitution instead of shopping.

Yet, her base still defends her as one of them. I'd like to take a poll at her rallies to see how many years it would take her supporters to pay for her clothes. Yes, her clother are going to charity (a decision I suspect had more to do with the price tag being made public) but what about the fees for makeup and hair.

A few Brooks Brothers no-iron white shirts, some fake pearls, black pencil skirt, a few jackets, heels and flats. Piss elegant -- maybe $2500. if you shop the Saks sale racks, Loehmann's, Banana Republic and DSW. Easy peasy.

Just FYI, not that it really matters, but i have seen her wear that high-belted white raincoat thing more than once. But $150,000? She was robbed! That white poly ribbed thing was ugleeeee.

Last night I went to Macy's in Dallas...more salespeople than customers....I bought two shirts which were marked down 50% and then there was an additional 40% off...times are tough all over! I have a feeling Gov. Palin should keep the clothes could be her last chance to shop at someone else's expense! Two more weeks and I hope she is home in Alaska and then can deal with her unethical conduct...You bet cha!

As Jacque Lowe, one of the photographers who accompanied the Kennedys on the campaign trail, recalled in 1961, Mrs. Kennedy "reduc[ed] her [campaign] wardrobe to three basic dresses, a string of pearls and a hat."

She relied on her innate good taste and intelligence (and her family's funds) to make an impression.
