The Ultimate Sacrifice

digg Share this on Facebook Huffpost - stumble reddit del.ico.us RSS

In Frank Rich's great Memorial Day column in the Sunday New York Times about South Pacific (and Iraq) is this stunning fact about our president which I missed so I'm reporting it here...and I quote...

"This month, in case you missed it, he (Bush) told an interviewer that he had made the ultimate sacrifice of giving up golf for the war's duration because 'I don't want some mom whose son may have recently died to see the commander in chief playing golf.'"

But has he given up hunting dove, one of his favorite pastimes at the Crawford Ranch?

That reminds me of a friend of mine in elementary school. She gave up strawberries for Lent. In Northern New York. In the winter.

Just consider all the innocent civilians -- not to mention combatants -- who have made "the ultimate sacrifice" -- not to mention those maimed and otherwise injured -- in America's unnecessary wars and other unnecessary military actions in the past 50 years. America sought to "defeat communism" by vigorously bombing civilians in Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia. The current war in Iraq -- perhaps even less necessary than that in Vietnam -- has killed hundreds of thousands. Smaller incursions have killed dozens or hundreds at a time in Grenada, Panama, Somalia and, more recently, Afghanistan.
And yet this weekend our media are again wallowing in sentimentalism about our dead military personnel, whose numbers are dwarfed by the huge numbers of people around the world killed mainly because of the arrogance and stupidity of U.S. politicians. This is one veteran who wishes we would abolish Memorial Day out of consideration for what we have done to the rest of the world. Or at least acknowledge the unnecessary slaughters we have inflicted -- and are still inflicting -- on those countries.

Yeah, I cannot believe that the rest of the pastel plaid pant wearing club swingers didn't show their patriotism by giving up their little balls in a unified stance not to grieve the mothers of those Bush sent of to be slain as well.

Then there's the rich-greedy giving up paying taxes - to help out the troops.
