Quirky, Spontaneous, and Nerdy. Oh my! My name is Amy Chen and I am a sophomore in the Rutgers School of Arts and Sciences program majoring in computer science. I strive to always find opportunities that challenge my way of thinking and nurture my personal growth.

So, aside from science and brains and whatnot, what shenanigans do I do with my free time?

A large part of my time is dedicated to TEDxRutgers. TEDxRutgers is all about spreading ideas worth spreading and giving our speakers a platform to launch their ideas. It features a diverse range of speakers who cover topics like entrepreneurship, 3D printing, spoken word poetry, education, activism, and a host of other projects. I am also involved in the Rutgers Makerspace. These hackerspace communities cultivate original thinking and push students to bend their mental limitations. Basically, we provide awesome high tech equipment (like 3D printers or laser cutters) to students for FREE. The idea is for students to come up with their own project to execute. Recently, I became involved in the Verbal Mayhem Slam Poetry club which is a poetry collective that provides students with the opportunity to spit some truth. Lastly, I am currently a peer mentor for Rutgers Future Scholars high school students in the hope of providing them the academic and emotional support needed to pursue an education. Everyone has potential, but I hope to provide the support and attention needed for these students to reach these goals.

In my other free time, I enjoy swimming, working on DIY (Do it Yourself) projects, creating 3D models of jewelry, and writing slam poetry pieces. I strongly believe in the power of positivity and inject optimism into my everyday life. With the right attitude and work ethic, anything is possible!
