President Obama sure is angry. He scolded Democrats today, telling us that our apathy is "inexcusable" and "irresponsible". Really? If you want inexcusable try this: turning the Democratic Party into "Liberal Dude Nation." Converting 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue into a veritable frat house with few women leaders and nary a focus on women's issues. Allowing blatantly sexist remarks by the men of the Democratic Party without retribution -- just another trip to the punch bowl of misogyny.

Democratic women have been watching. Sure, we aren't standing in parks dressed up in Statue of Liberty costumes -- maybe, that's not our style. But, the DNC better take note: a recent Gallup Poll reveals that just 24% of Democratic and 21% of Independent white women are enthusiastic about voting in November. Lowest level for any group of voters. Sounds awful. And, it could get much worse.

A second tsunami -- the Tea Party's alter-ego -- could hit Democrats in 2012. Democratic (and newly Independent) women are finally saying: Enough! In 2010, these women might choose to stay at home. But, there's a second wave to come: the RNC is quietly filling its pipeline with female presidential and vice presidential prospects, while the Liberal Dude Nation cheerfully refers to our top female prospects as "hot." If this keeps up, in 2012, former and current Democratic women might just be pulling the "R" lever.

The roots of Liberal Dude Nation took hold in 2008. Even then, candidate Obama was more interested in admonishing women than listening to them. When then-Senator Hillary Clinton dropped out of the presidential race, a group of her supporters were summoned to a meeting in New York City. This was at a time when many Democratic women were extremely troubled by the sexism in the presidential primary. At the meeting, we were "informed" by a senior woman member of the Obama campaign: "We're not used to drama." There's no drama in Liberal Dude Nation! The majority of Democratic women coalesced in 2008 over concerns about Supreme Court nominees and Roe v. Wade. Of course, once elected, President Obama would on one hand appoint two female justices; but with the other hand sign an executive order on abortion which codified the Hyde Amendment, dealing the biggest blow to Roe v. Wade since the ruling became the law of the land.

Fool us once, shame on you. Fool us twice, shame on us!

Once in office, Obama's Liberal Dude Nation really flourished. The boys got to play basketball and golf together -- until the media made a stink -- then one woman was invited to a round of golf. The boys set our flailing economic policy -- the boys put up with one woman (Romer), but then chased her out. The Liberal Dude Nation's inner circle, the czars, are 90% male (selected by Obama behind closed doors, without senate confirmation). And so on. But, hey -- no worries -- it's all cool in the Liberal Dude Nation.

When Democratic women did complain, Liberal Dude Nation had an answer: Obama signed the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act in January 2009. Never mind that the Ledbetter Act only extends the time to file a lawsuit; and Liberal Dude Nation couldn't be bothered to shepherd the Paycheck Fairness Act, which actually requires equal pay for equal work, through the Democratically controlled senate over the past 20 months. Not a priority in the Liberal Dude Nation.

But the real wounds for Democratic women are in sexism that continues to flourish unchallenged in the Democratic Party. It's a constant reminder of what we learned the hard way in 2008: the notion of equality in the Democratic Party does not extend to gender.

So women privately shake our heads in disbelief as the Liberal Dude Nation, time after time, continues to make sexist remarks against Democratic women. The men of the Liberal Dude Nation get free passes for sexism. Why? As Bob Beckel stated on Fox yesterday: "You're a woman, you better be careful about saying who I carry water for." Bob's right. The Republicans are worse. Aren't they? Well, no, not anymore. Make a sexist remark against a Republican woman and watch the likes of Ann Coulter, Michelle Malkin, Sarah Palin, Rush Limbaugh and Sean Hannity call you out and defend her. But not in the Liberal Dude Nation. Our sexism is so internalized, we just let our men diminish our women without a peep. Boys will be boys. It's the Liberal Dude Nation!

But the problem with the Liberal Dude Nation is that gradually, well, it's just dudes. Increasingly, the Democratic women have had it. As Susan B. Anthony stated back in 1872: "No self respecting woman should wish or work for the success of a party that ignores her sex." Sounds like the Democratic Party has a decision to make: lose the Liberal Dude Nation, or lose Democratic Women!

Two women appointed to the SC, many appointed to upper positions within Obama's administration, signing an equal pay law, I could go on and on. I have no idea what planet this author hails from.

The Republican Party respects women? Palin picked for VP & completely unqualified. And that advances the equality of women? How exactly.

There are some feminists who are convinced that more women in power is equivalent to more power for women... even when the women in question are supporters of patriarchy.
There's some sense to representative democracy, but I think it is canceled out when you have token women and minorities placed in power who stand against progress for the underprivileged.

I understand getting offended by sexist comments launched at Palin by some on the left. How this allows someone to overlook Palin's own pro-patriarchal stances is beyond me.

Further, let me say this. Women like you hung on to hillary way past her expiration date. She lost the nomination in Feb and quit in June. So all the women like you, who hung on hoping O would fail or falter, pushed yourselves out of the O admin. Why hire or support a woman like you after you spent the last 2 years attacking him. I feel like we're in a bad episode of the West Wing when Donna comes to Josh for a job and he starts reading her clips savaging his candidate. You and your ilk spent all your time attacking Obama and then you are shocked that he doesn't just roll over and welcome you back into the fold. You get what you get. With no sympathy for me.

I don't personally believe that Obama has anything against women. It's just that the the rich, ivy league privileged Wall Street bankers Obama loves inviting into his closest circle of confidants don't like admitting women into their ranks, and therefore Obama does not have a wide selection of women to chose from to install into power around him. I am sure though that Obama would be willing to consider any woman for a job in his government as long as she has an ivy league education, is a neoliberal, has extensive ties to Goldman Sachs, and is very rich. Sadly, there just aren't as many women as men who meet those job requirements.

Took a look at 'The New Agenda' website- a lot of angry women there and a lot of BS. Get a grip ladies, the republicans want to take control of your uterus. I'm in my sixties and I remember the old days and they weren't good.

yeah it was rough. Back then, women who wanted to work weren't favored in doing so. We've come a  long way. Now it's virtually essential that both people work, even if they despise their jobs and barely see the kids, just to get by.

lol.

a lot of women wouldn't mind a return to the bad old days.

Elizabeth Warren is now a relatively low level adviser in the Administration, and one with virtually no power or authority. If you want to go through and name every mid level woman bureaucrat in the administration as well as Warren, then sure, why not.

As a lifelong Democratic women (60 years old) I am disgusted by your assertion that because President Obama plays basketball or golf with a few male friends once in a while, Democratic women should abandon the party and vote Republican. The Republican candidates running for office this year have vowed to repeal health care, dismantle or privatize Social Security and Medicare, use second amendment remedies to deal with congress, attack civil rights legislation through repeal of the 14th amendment, abolish the Department of Education, repeal the new financial regulations, and work to label abortion as murder. If these are the policies and people you would vote to support then you have already left the Democratic party. Don't let the door hit you on the way out!

Amy Siskind's posts are always an amusing read. She can turn any issue into a post about how women are being oppressed by men. Amy is really very talented at that, if not much else, and her posts should be read with an eye for the artistry involved in crafting them towards that end--even if there is little credibility or logic behind her thesis.

I'm sorry, but this is a lot of cherry picking. There is a serious counterargument to this that is quite persuasive. What could be more important than a Supreme Court Nominee? Not much. The two Obama has made are women. Many other examples have been made in the comment section here.

I note also the Lily Ledbetter legislation that the President pushed and got passed as one of his first agenda items. I always thought women were much smarter than we male counterparts. But this is a lot of whining about nothing in my opinion. You think the Republicans being in is worth the show of apathy? I don't get it.

Not just one of his first, but his VERY FIRST - after only NINE days of being in office. (eight and a half, if you want to be technical about it)

More importantly, the author would have us believe that it was the pressure of advocates complaining that compelled the President to sign the bill. That is some kind of pressure, especially considering that he was at the very peak of his popularity, after winning an historic election, and riding the wave of a week of grand inauguration celebrations. Of course, we all know that it isn't true.
