Along for the Ride: Upstate New York

What's Your Reaction:

In the fall, I try to spend time on the East Coast and, if my schedule permits, get over to Paris, where I used to live. In both places, I hang out with old friends, eat amazing food and see the big art shows that traditionally open during this season. This year, I headed upstate New York to see the Dia:Beacon and Storm King before heading off to Paris, which was incredibly invigorating in so many ways, albeit super expensive!

Here's a slideshow on the New York highlights. Up next week: Paris.

Oh, you guys! Picky-picky! When anyone in Woodstock drives to the city (NYC) they say they are going "downstate." Go figure.

I'm originally from near Niagara Falls and have always considered myself from sidestate New York. Seems that any place more than 50 miles out of NYC is "upstate". 400+ miles to drive from the Falls to NYC made Toronto feel MUCH more like home than NYC.

I'm so glad you enjoyed your visit to Dia: Beacon. You did have quite the road trip! For suggestions on museums and historic estates to visit, or for planning a trip to the heart of the Hudson Valley, visit us at www.DutchessTourism.com!

Um, Beacon is most definitely in Upstate NY. You don't need to live in Utica, Plattsburgh or Potsdam to be in Upstate.

Given that the front page shows a picture of Cornell University, I was expecting upstate to be upstate.
