Andrew Slack
Andrew Slack is co-founder and executive director of the Harry Potter Alliance (HPA). Under his leadership, the HPA has sent five cargo planes to Haiti, built libraries across the world, advocated for human rights, media reform, and equality on LGBTQ, education, and immigration.

USC's Annenberg School of Communications has called Andrew's approach and theory of social change one of the "premier models of civic engagement for the twenty-first century." Andrew has been featured on NPR and the New York Times, written for the LA Times and, given a talk at TEDx Rome and served as a keynote speaker at the Nobel Peace Prize Forum.

In his prior career, Andrew performed comedy at hundreds of colleges, taught acting workshops, and produced online videos that have been viewed millions of times. In his spare time (ha!), he is writing a book based on years worth of comedy material and is known for an uncanny impression of Barack Obama.

The views expressed here are entirely his own and not that of the HPA.

It may be hard to believe, but recently, a growing handful of folks are taking up the cause of defending the politics and actions of none other than Darth Vader, Emperor Palpatine, and the Galactic Empire while casting doubt on the virtues of the Rebellion, whose ranks include Luke Skywalker,...

The Hangover Presidency

As I think on the last four years, I think about the blockbuster film, The Hangover. Obama has so far had a Hangover Presidency with a first term that began the same year that The Hangover came out in theaters.

Of course, instead of the hilarious Zach Galifianakis,...

Making All Harry Potter Chocolate Fair Trade

(17) Comments | Posted November 16, 2010 | 1:54 PM

Sometimes my childish brain thinks that chocolate comes from Santa's workshop, mad scientists working in a lab entirely made of chocolate, or Willy Wonka's orange-faced employees known as Oompa Loompas. But it turns out chocolate comes from cocoa farmers toiling in the hot sun over cocoa plants. Boy oh boy,...

What if we gave our teenagers the opportunity to imagine themselves as the heroes that they have grown up watching, rather than treating their precious minds as nothing more than a way to line the pockets of some CEO?

Enter the Harry Potter Alliance. Praised by J.K. Rowling,...

Dear Dennis Kucinich,

You know as well as any one else that this current bill will save millions and that your voting against it will kill millions. Do not slit the throat of health care reform with your pen, when your pen can sign us into a bright future!

Harry Potter Fans Take On Maine's Proposition One

(6) Comments | Posted October 22, 2009 | 3:23 AM

If Maine's Proposition 1 (aka California's Proposition 8) passes on November 3, the movements for intolerance and bigotry will gain momentum, with voters granting the government the right to strip same-sex couples of the chance to be married. If the proposed legislation is stopped, we will have demonstrated that Americans...

What Would Dumbledore Do?

Gandhi. MLK. Mother Theresa. The Dalai Lama. Visionaries whose words and deeds have pointed humanity toward a new way of being in the world. Also, Albus Dumbledore.

Yes, yes. I know what you're thinking: Dumbledore is different than the aforementioned figures because Dumbledore was gay. But that's not the only...

Harry Potter Fans and the Fight Against "VoldeMedia"

(1) Comments | Posted December 17, 2007 | 10:58 PM

Imagine a world where the government arrests people at random, suspends their right to a free trial, and subjects them to torture in an effort to look "tough on terror." The media is controlled by a privileged few who characterize activists against this gross suspension of habeas corpus as unpatriotic...
