Indigestion: Natural Remedies for Relief

Posted: 01/25/11 10:31 AM ET

Indigestion isn't an especially glamorous medical topic, but relieving this condition -- and keeping the whole gastrointestinal (GI) tract operating comfortably and efficiently -- is vital to overall well being. As French philosopher Jean Jacques Rousseau put it, "Happiness: a good bank account, a good cook and a good digestion."

Unfortunately, too many Americans are taking a dubious shortcut to digestive health: GI medication use has jumped dramatically in recent years. One in ten Americans was prescribed at least one GI medication on an outpatient basis in 2007 (the most recent year for which figures are available) compared to 1 in 15 in 1997. Such medications often do more harm than good -- masking imbalances that can lead to more serious conditions, and causing numerous side effects, including lower B12 levels, increased risk of fractures and even increased risk of infections.

So let's explore some natural, gentle means to keep the digestive tract on track.

Nearly everyone has an occasional bout of indigestion. Discomfort or burning in the upper abdomen is often associated with overeating. This kind of indigestion usually goes away without treatment. If you avoid foods that trigger your symptoms and unlearn unhealthy habits, such as eating too much or too quickly. The following self-help tips will both relieve and prevent indigestion:

  • Don't eat too quickly.
  • Eat smaller meals.
  • Avoid late-night eating.
  • Try to relax after meals.
  • Avoid spicy foods if they contribute to your indigestion.
  • Don't smoke.
  • Avoid or minimize intake of coffee and alcoholic beverages.
  • Keep a food diary to help identify items that trigger indigestion.

If these prove insufficient, spend more time considering the cause of your problem. Your digestive system mirrors your state of mind, which is why so many digestive disorders are stress-related. Pay attention to your emotions as well as your eating habits. Once you figure out exactly what's triggering your pain, you'll need to make lifestyle changes that may include relaxation exercises, yoga or meditation. Here are some other remedies you can try:

Drink peppermint tea, an excellent stomach soother if you've eaten too much. (However, it may worsen esophageal reflux by relaxing the sphincter where the esophagus joins the stomach. Chamomile tea is an alternative.)

Drink ginger tea, eat candied ginger or take a 500 mg capsule of ginger root extract.

Probiotics are products containing the helpful bacteria (usually Lactobacilli or Bifidobacteria) that normally inhabit the human digestive tract. Most of these "friendly" bacteria occur naturally in cultured milk products, such as yogurt with active cultures or acidophilus milk. Look for brands containing Bacillus coagulans (BC-30) or Lactobacillus GG in liquid or capsule form. The usual dose is based on number of colony forming units, or CFU, and is typically in the range of 10-20 billion CFU. Probiotics are also an effective treatment for viral and antibiotic-associated diarrhea in children, inflammatory bowel disease, lactose intolerance, irritable bowel syndrome, vaginal yeast infections, food allergies, eczema and recurrent C. difficile infection.

Experiment with plant-derived digestive enzymes that can help you process foods.

Artichoke-leaf extract may help with indigestion by increasing bile flow needed to digest fats. Choose products that are standardized for caffeoylquinic acids and follow the package directions.

Deglycyrrhizinated licorice (DGL) is licorice devoid of glycyrrhizin, a compound that can raise blood pressure. It protects the lining of the stomach and esophagus from irritation by acid and is much safer than acid-suppressive drugs. Take two tablets chewed slowly 15 minutes before meals and at bedtime, or take one-half teaspoon of DGL powder at those times. Allow the extract to dissolve in the mouth and slowly trickle down the throat. You can take DGL as long as you have symptoms.

Finally, be aware that the common lower GI disorder known as "irritable bowel syndrome" or IBS is now being portrayed in pharmaceutical company advertisements as a disease requiring drug treatment. "What for many people is a mild functional disorder -- requiring little more than reassurance about its benign natural course -- is currently being reframed as a serious disease attracting a label and a drug, with all the associated harms and costs," concluded an article by Australian researchers titled, "Selling sickness: the pharmaceutical industry and disease mongering," published in the April, 2002, issue of the British Medical Journal.

IBS often resolves with lifestyle changes and mind/body interventions, but it is a real condition. If the diarrhea, stomach pain or other symptoms become chronic - meaning that they have persisted for more than four weeks, or if they have become steadily worse in character - consult with your primary health care provider.

Exercising can expeditie the digestion process due to the increased metabolism. The only time I started getting acid reflux on a regular basis was went I became sedentary after getting married. Now that I've started exercising again it is gone and, yes, I'm still married...

I had suffered from acid reflux for decades, then I had stomach surgery in 1996 on a hiaetal (sp??) hernia, a tightening of the valve from the esophagus to the stomach, clipping of the nerves that cause ulcers, and a pyloric stenosis (to correct a brith defect that normally leads to death as a baby). I have had acid reflux for a total of ONE time since the surgery.

Too much coffee (acid) or soda can give me heartburn, but water usually settles it if I over-indulge.

After fairly-severe IBS-C for 3 years, my third GI figured out I had become ultra-sensitive to food additives, but left it up to me to figure out which ones triggered the extreme inflammation. So far I've figured out:
1. Carrageenan (extreme)
2. Annatto (medium)
3. Nitrates/Nitrates (somewhat minor)

If I mostly eat foods made from scratch, I found I can tolerate INsoluble fibers, but if my gut lining is irritated from eating the food additives that bother me, those same INsoluble fibers exacerbate the irritation. I guess it's like rubbing a soft plastic scrubbie on irritated skin - it wouldn't hurt if the skin wasn't irritated. If my gut lining becomes irritated, I only eat soluble fibers for 1-2 days until things are better.

Ginger is wonderful. Hubby has acid reflux, he cant have too many spicy foods.

Milk is great unless youre lactose intolerant. Soy milk may be a great alternative.

Cheese is also good for upset stomachs, a bit risky if you ate too much.

cutting down on sugary foods and processed foods helps too

Good advice, A deliberate strategy is best for long term effect. But when indigestion comes on.
I find eating a thoroughly washed raw celery stalk slowly or a thin slice of raw potatoe if I have no celery to relieve indigestion within five to ten minutes. A few times I have had to eat two stalks to get relief. Good luck with the remedy, I do get good results with this

Dairy caused mine. Went away when I finally eliminated it. Garlic is the worst. Hot peppers, Tomato sauce and all the other things are fine for me.

Thanks, Dr. Weil for brilliant advice. As a physical educator and nutritionist I find few listening to such advice, while "running" as fast as they can to the Fast Food Joints.

Best remedy for ongoing stomach dissonance is aloe. Consume some raw aloe occasionally and over time stomach problems disappear.

Cut a stem of aloe or a part of it, put in the fridge for at least 20 minutes to reduce the bitterness, cut into small pieces, put in tablespoon, swallow. One or two tablespoons every couple weeks will soothe the stomach, and make you "regular". You can find it in regular supermarkets frequently or in supermarkets that cater to foreigners from Africa, Asia, Caribbean or South America.

Good stuff endodermically, or exodermically.

The most common cause of acid reflux disease is obesity, according to research, and his link.
Fat surrounding the stomach is pushing acid up the esophagus. Lose the fat, problem likely gone.

I was diagnosed with and treated for IBS (with lots of medications) for a few years. I couldn't be more than 1 min away from a bathroom at any time. Then I ended a relationship with a long-term friend who had become very controlling. From the next day forward to these 20 yrs later - I have never had another symptom of IBS. It's important to look for the issues in our lives that contribute to dis-ease.

I always keep some candied ginger on hand for when indigestion strikes. I find it usually takes away the pain within 10 minutes. I swear by it. For any entrepreneurs out there (Dr. Weill?), I think a good product to develop would be ginger gum. It would be great to have on hand for nights when you eat out. A good way to sweeten the breath and help prevent or ease any indigestion.

Ginger is mysterious! I keep the small bottles of pickled ginger (that is used for sushi) in the frig as an immediate aide for acid indigestion. Works like a charm and I read somewhere that it counters a type of bacteria or something found in sushi in another country/ies.

Good stuff.

I had a sensitive stomach with several bouts of food poisoning. The probiotics seem to have prevented this. As far as indigestion goes, a low carb, gluten-free diet has completed eliminated it (just make sure you eat "real" food and not sugar alcohols).

Simple solution: don't take any Rx's. Americans are 4% of world's population, take 60% (by $) of world's prescription drugs, around 44th in longevity. Seems obvious to me, we are over-medicated.

Cannibis cures everything. If you then eat HEMP seeds to satisfy your munchies, your whole illness is cured. Hemp is the best food, fuel, fiber & safest medicine. HEMP is Grown is most countries.

Legalize HEMP & Cannibis. It used to be a patriotic & mandatory before propaganda LIES changed law.

when I was young I thought it was just to get "high" with - boy was I wrong! amazing stuff so hidden from so many sick people - how sad main stream doctors simply refuse to learn about the body's largest neurotransmitter system, how it can prevent damage from strokes and heart attacks and soooo much more

Cannabis is by far the best anti-nausea drug there is, including for morning-after.

Researchers have found the CB1 and CB2 receptors that respond to marijuana. The presence of these indicates that THC is a natural human hormone, although normally short-lived and in low levels. They are on nerve sheaves, which may explain why they block MS.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cannabinoid_receptor

Inhibition of gastrointestinal activity has been observed after administration of Δ9-THC, or of anandamide. This effect has been assumed to be CB1-mediated since the specific CB1 antagonist SR 141716A (Rimonabant) blocks the effect. Another report, however, suggests that inhibition of intestinal motility may also have a CB2-mediated component

My partner has a 'sensitive stomach' and ha frequent bouts with some of these problems. He now makes his own very simple/basic sourdough bread, and has a small bowl of raw ots every morning. No more problems. Miracle cure!

My father used to float bread in warm milk, eat it all. Don't tell your partner, but research reported in Science News indicates that placebos treat IBS and other GI disorders extremely well. Apparently nervousness causes a lot of it, and the placebo gives confidence. Your partner's treatment may be placebo. But if it works, don't fix it as we engineers say.
