HARTFORD, CT (The Borowitz Report) -- Acknowledging that he "misspoke" about his military service, Connecticut Attorney General Richard Blumenthal today attempted to clarify matters.
"I meant to say that I was a veterinarian, not a veteran," he said in a press conference in Hartford.
"I left off the last three syllables to conserve time, so I could go back to work for the people of Connecticut," he added.
As to his statement that he had served in Vietnam, Mr. Blumenthal said, "What I meant to say was I was a server at Vie et Nomme, a French restaurant in Greenwich." More here.

MJ Rosenberg: The Blumenthal Case: Me, I'm Just Glad I Didn't Serve In Vietnam
I think that Blumenthal devotes so much of his public life to helping vets not because he really wishes he went but because he feels terrible about how LBJ, and a generation of American politicians used and abused these men, and then forgot them.

Politics doesn't have many rules. You can get away with just about anything. Being a hypocrite usually does you in. As does, and I think Richard Blumenthal will get to this eventually, claiming to have a fought a war you didn't actually fight in.
