Andy Marra is the Communications Manager for the Arcus Foundation, private grantmaking institution dedicated to the idea that people can live in harmony with one another and the natural world. Prior to Arcus, she was the Public Relations Manager for the Gay, Lesbian & Straight Education Network (GLSEN). Previously, she was Co-Director of Nodutdol for Korean Community Development and Senior Media Strategist for GLAAD. Andy has also served on boards and advisory councils, including Chinese for Affirmative Action, Funding Exchange, Human Rights Campaign, the National Campaign to End the Korean War, and the National Center for Transgender Equality.

Andy has been honored by the White House for her contributions to the LGBT movement, profiled in The Advocate’s “Forty Under 40" and the inaugural Trans 100, and listed as one of The Huffington Post’s “Most Compelling LGBT People.” She is also the past recipient of the GLSEN Pathfinder Award, the National Gay & Lesbian Task Force Creating Change Award, the Colin Higgins Foundation Courage Award, and was honored by the City of New York for her work in the community. 나는 스펙이 괜찮은 남자들과는 데이트 운이 좋은 편이었다. 그 예로는 기업 변호사, 투자은행 직원, 외교관, 의사, 국회의원 보좌관 등이 있었다. 출장을 갔을 때조차 남자랑 술을 마시거나 저녁 약속이 항상 있었다.


그러나 이 남자들과의 만남이 의미 있는 만남으로 이어지지는 못했다. 모두 비슷한 정도의 관심과 육체적 끌림, 그리고 한 번 더 만나볼 의향을 느끼는 정도였다. 그러나 내 성적 정체성 때문에 처음 몇 번의 데이트 말고는 그 이상 진도를 나갈 수 없었다. 내로라하는 잘나가는 총각들이 나 같은 트렌스젠더 여성과 그 이상으로 만나기를 너무나도 무서워했기 때문이다. 그들은 사람들이 자신의 남성성을 의심할까 두려워했다. 또한 다른 사람들이 자신의 성적 취향을 이성애가 아닌 다른 것으로 오해할까 무서워했다.


한 번은 어떤 남자가 나를 집에 바래다준 적이 있었다. 와인도 마시고 함께 즐겁게 이야기도 나누고 젠가 게임도 몇 번이나 한 밤이었다. 그 날 저녁이야말로 진짜 대박이라고 생각했다. 그러나 집에 거의 도착했을 때 두 번째 데이트에 대한 기대는 산산이 부서졌다.


"부탁 하나 들어줄래요?" 도로에 차를 천천히 세우며 그가 말했다.


나의 데이트 경험 상 데이트 끝에 나오는 저런 말은 단 한가지를 의미한다. "­너무 기대하지 말라"
