A Message to America's Homophobes: No One Really Gives a S**t Anymore if Gays Get Married!

State legislatures have been passing gay-marriage bills left and right over the past few months. Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Connecticut, Massachusetts and Iowa have all moved to allow gay couples to engage in the same revered institution normally reserved for such upstanding heterosexuals as OJ Simpson (murderer), Joey Buttafucco (hired a murderer, albeit a sloppy one) and Peter Cook (Christie Brinkley's uber-philandering ex). Other states like New Jersey and New York are also considering similar bills.

In New York this week, as the State Assembly voted to legalize gay-marriage, Brooklyn Assemblyman Dov Hikind, a staunch opponent of the measure, frustratingly wondered where the opposition was hiding: "Wake up! Where are you? "It's the bottom of the ninth, two outs, and you're losing -- big time."

Now let me be the first to acknowledge and appreciate the unintentional appropriateness of Hikind's analogy involving a game men play where balls and long phallic-looking objects are grabbed and passed around for hours. But more important, the answer to Hikind's question, "Where are you?" is simple: people are too busy worrying about their jobs, their incomes, their savings, their homes and whether or not they'll have adequate health care. They're also worrying about the effect the prolonged recession is having on the crime rates in New York and other cities across America. In short, what two gay dudes or lesbians do to commit to each other is just not an issue anymore to most thinking people. It's just a matter of time before the entire nation--with the exception of a few small, densely populated narrow-minded die-hard bastions of homophobia--accepts and legalizes same-sex marriage and finally puts this issue to bed (pun intended).

It's rather surprising to find ANY conservative still railing against Marriage Equality. If you stop and think about it, conservatives should instead be rallying behind Marriage Equality because Marriage Equality will have a far greater impact on the Gay Community than it could possibly ever have on the greater community. This is because the Gay Community is a relatively small minority community, and simple analysis reveals the disproportionate impact Marriage Equality will have on these two communities.

Under Marriage Equality, there would probably be only about one in a hundred marriages that would be comprised of same sex couples; certainly no more than, say, three in a hundred. However, from the perspective of the Gay Community, that would represent something like perhaps one in ten gay individuals, or more, that would be married; a sizable part of the Gay Community.

And, specifically, what impact would these marriages have in the Gay Community? I can't help but believe that it would do anything other than to bring conservative values into the Gay Community.

If anything is to be "destroyed" by Marriage Equality, it would hardly be Marriage itself; it would more likely be whatever is left of the sexual liberation ushered into the Gay Community in the 1970's.

On the other hand, conservatives seem to have a way of focusing on emotions (i.e. fear, hatred...) rather than analyzing, so I guess it should expected that this aspect of the Marriage Equality issue has never dawned on them.

Sorry Andy, there are many of us who DO care. But not for the same reason as John above. We care that it's 2009 and in some states pedophiles, child/spouse abusers and the like can walk into a voting booth and strip away the rights of other Americans based on their own personal "religion" and "morality." Yes, you're right, it shouldn't be an issue, but it surely is one. I for one am a heterosexual who cares deeply that our "liberal" president won't take a stand against inequality for certain Americans and that he continues to pander to the bigot, church-going, homophobe contingent that helped get him into office. Although I guess we couldn't hope for much after the bigot, homophobe "preacher" he chose to speak at his inauguration. Lord knows (pun intended) he couldn't find anyone else as eloquent or upstanding in this big country of ours. I happen to care more about equality than my income, my savings (or lack thereof) or my home. And I bet there are a lot of gay people who care as much as I do, perhaps even more. But hey, at least the other countries envy us for our "freedom."

People will begin to care a few years hence when the support of society for adultery, gay marriage, cohabitation, and other forms of sex outside of normal marriage take their toll on the rising generation.

Well, we do care. I hope enough to fight for it NOW and get it in every state & DOMA repealed.

Obama & Congress need a bit of a push.
